For the 1/2" socket set, I use the Stanley and for 1/4" it is Taparia - love the quality.

I am using Stanley socket wrench set for 3 years now and they are well built. I would recommend them, irrespective of quality of other brands (as I have very little experience with others including Taparia)

I was not clear in my earlier post where I mentioned Taparia socket box quality to be poor. I was referring to their 1/2 inch drive hex socket set that I have.

From the pics posted by Anurag above the 1/4 drive molded case is excellent and that is what I was expecting in the 1/2 inch drive as well.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out for the Stanley 1/2" drive set on Amazon. The price keeps fluctuating. When I was in the market and shopping for the 1/2" drive set it was between Taparia and Stanley with Taparia being the cheaper option. But one fine day the Stanley set was listed for 2.8k with no shipping charge that too from Cloudtail :Shockked: and I just had to pick it up.
I had to wait close to a month on getting it delivered though. I think they ran out of stock or something but because I resisted the urge to cancel because I had no idea when they would deliver.

I feel the fit and feel in hand the Stanley ratchet trumps the Taparia one. Somehow the Taparia one just feels cheaper and less tough.

Sorry for the noob question, Is there any difference between 1/2” and 1/4” drive set in terms of usage?

I had picked up Taparia 46 pcs which is 1/4”, only for working on RE Interceptor.

Heavy duty DIY works will need a 1/2" socket set. For basic DIY's the 1/4" socket set will do the job perfectly.

Any local make oscillating tool that our DIY members recommend? All the branded ones are expensive.

I am planning to buy an air blower for household related work like cleaning the duct area, window/door channels etc. I have come across the below products on Amazon and need help to decide which will be the better choice.

Both of the above are from reputed, trustworthy brands and are rated for 16000 RPM at no load and come with the volumetric flow rate of 3.5 m³/min. If any other parameters need to be considered, please let me know.

Another question that I had in mind was; do these tools need any kind of maintenance like greasing, cleaning etc ?

How are these two for amateur DIY folks?

1/2" is for heavy duty. The socket sizes are limited to 8mm at the lower end.
1/4" is for light duty. The socket sizes at the lower end go till 4mm, but stop at 20mm or so at the higher end.

There are also 3/4" and 1" drive for larger socket sizes > 36mm (upto 100mm or more in some cases)

The reason for different drive size is
1. Basic drive size determines the maximum torque that can safely be applied before stripping/breaking. It also determines the diameter of various accessories - extension bars, driving handle, universal joints etc.

2. Small nuts/bolt <10mm do not need much torque, hence 1/4" suffices

3. Large nuts/bolts > 36mm can and do withstand greater torque so larger diameter drives are provided.

4. Smaller drives (and sockets) are more compact, thinner and easier to use in confined spaces.

I bought the Amazon basics one recently and the quality is quite good for DIY. I have bought quite a lot of the Amazon basics tools offlate. Other than a broken bit, I have no other complaints :thumbs up

Have not checked on Amazon until now.

The same set is costing around 5K (with delivery) nowadays..
