Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

Superb!! I was thinking to do something similar in my car but didn't got time. For your IR sensor blocking problem with pen drive, you can connect another IR sensor to your Headunit sensor and mount outside headunit somewhere at an angle that it receives signal without any obstruction.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

Superb job, the finish though it could have been a bit better, still is quite good by itself.

Even those who are not zero in electronics would have been proud of this work.

It should inspire many to do this to their earlier vehicles as well as get you a line of customers.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

Can we get a company made steering with audio control buttons and then modify it to work with the HU installed in any car. E.g. Get a SX4 steering which has the audio control buttons and install it on a old Swift and modify the way the controls work.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@desmo: Yes its possible. All u need to do is open up the wiring loom and see what buttons are connected by which wire, once done draw a circuit diagram to make things easy and just solder the wires onto the existing remote, and your done. Can say this with confidence coz i have just checked out an i20's steering wheel with all conections. The only question will be whether there's enough space for the remote, once u figure that out, it'll be pretty easy.

@ACM: Thanks dude, will improve the finish the next time i plan to get my hands dirty. Hell ive already got a close friend who wants me to replicate this for his lancer, let see how that goes.

@Hashim: I had thought of this option earlier but the thing is i really dont want to open the front panel as its still under warranty, and if i mess something, ill be trashed by my folks. Will be buying a flexi usb connector to sort this issue. Thanks.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@Utopian: Thanks bro.

@New.novice: For an aftermarket solution you could get a steering remote thats available at any accessory shop depending on the brand of your HU. Some universal remotes have come also come into the market, check which suits your HU and buy accordingly. I doubt if these would work if your HU is company fitted.

Nice DIY, pretty interesting. Your USB problem could be solved by using the mini HP pen drives, these are pretty small.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

This is a very interesting work... very nicely executed... Good on you ripper.
I would surely try it on my Old Alto. Just a question. Where does power comes to this remote from the horn connections?

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@shyam: Thanks bro. I first cut the spare remotes, then cut the horn/steering center and fixed it in position. Then used some spare plastics pieces, made its hot (as good as wax) and plugged the gaps with it. Kept pressing the molten plastic as far as it would go into the gaps. Later filed the exess. Then used plastic putty wherever neccessary, wet sanded, primered and finally painted with flat black paint. No copyrights .

@krish go: The remote uses its own power ie its battery CR2032. Will post pics of the insides soon to help u understand the jugaad.

dude, you can even go for a HP pen drive which has a very short stem, or for that matter even a thumb drive, which fits into a USB slot.

Universal steering Remove?

@ Ripper, nice DIY, but let me be the devils advocate here and ask you few questions i have in mind before i go DIY.

1. What happens when you decide to upgrade or change your HU to a different Brand?
2. Why did you try fabricating steering mounted controls from other cars like SX4(looks nice and is a good fit)
3. If i am not wrong some Head units (blaupunkt) Have wiring looms and additions like steering controls etc, did you think aboutr getting one of those connectors before doing a open heart on your present remote?
4. As others expressed, battery changing will pose a problem so thinking of powering that too with the car electricals?

5. Finally can you mark each button and say what it does for better understanding?
