Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@ Ford madhan: The thing is that even the extension cable has a long plug (black rubber/plastic covering the USB cable) and it does not serve the purpose coz its as long as a pen drive.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

thanks for your reply. how would you change the battery of the steering mounted controls, considering that they are a modification of the remote. every time we need to change the battery, we need to open the horn button?

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

Just a thought.. Instead of opening and drilling the horn switch, can we split and attach the remote on sides of the horn switch like OE remote buttons? How difficult it would be?

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@ford madhan: Whoa! Thats just the thing i wanted. Any idea how much it costs? And yes you can do things the easier way, Just do the parallel connections and mount your buttons on a PCB (the one with holes) and stick/attach it wherever you like. The only fear i have in this type of fix is that the chances of wires getting plucked out are high so proceed with caution. It would be easy provided you are good at soldering in a PCB.Look up youtube for guides. Good Luck.

@Singh: The casing of the remote is the same as it came. All i have done is removed the membrane and passed wires through the holes, this way things remain tidy. As for the battery, i had taken things into consideration. If at all the battery dies i can just pull out the horn button and slide the battery into the cell compartment. For this i have maintained good clearance for my hands to get access. it wont take more than 3 minutes in my case.will post pics of the same tomm.

@technocrat: Yeah these are controls most new age cars dont come with.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

@Ripper - It is freely available in US. As it is a Belkin product, i think you should be able to get it from any electronic stores in India itself.

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

You really "ripped" it man. kudos.

Budget constraints did not let me go for the Airbag version of my fiesta, the other thing that I wanted in my car was steering mounted controls.

So while I can not do anything about air bags, you showed a way to go for the other wish of mine. Though I am equally sure that I wont be able to achieve what you have done. Are there any "after market" solutions available which you may have explored before you did this on your own?

Re: DIY: Steering mounted Audio Controls.

Simply Superb Ripper. I am amazed that some one could even think of doing something like this at home and you have gone a step further to complete the job with near perfect results.

What is the next DIY task on your mind?
