Niti Aayog releases handbook for EV charging infra implementation

I have been looking for some reading material to get a bird’s eye view understanding of all things relating to EV charging infra. Came across this handbook that might be useful if someone wants to get some basic consolidated info in one place. I was looking in the context of apartment complexes getting EV enabled.

Electric cars to be more expensive, the reason is nickel as WAR rages in Ukraine.

The automotive industry is facing another blow due to the war in Ukraine, as nickel prices are soaring.

On the other hand the fuel prices are also gonna go up:).

As both chinese, Indian and now Tesla are using LFP batteries, it should not effect the prices.

Electric Vehicle investment trickle in, don't expect it to go mainstream( 5-10%) before 2025.

He is already saying its a rare time. I dont know where this is, but there are superchargers every 30 miles in Southern California, and you can navigate to one where there are more than 5 free/available chargers.

There are cases of construction workers damaging charging equipment, vandalism, and genuine tech breakdowns - that drastically affects the rate of charge, leading to longer charge durations, which in turn increase wait times. I have had to do this once in the last 4 years, when 4 of the 8 chargers were broken, and the nearest charger was 42 miles away. I had 60 miles range left, and I didn't want to take chances in the Arizona desert.

One can also point out the queues for gas, that are miles long while hurricanes are approaching, and such. At that time I could very well be charging my car at home, watching these ICE cars wait in the line on weather channel. In the last 4 years, I have always had a car that was topped off with the fill 310 mile range in my garage - imagine the time saved in driving to the gas station hundreds of times over this entire time.

Automakers Should Reconsider Electric-Only Strategy : BMW CEO Warns

Zipse warned that the industry needs to be careful not to increase reliance on a few countries, citing the supply of raw materials and batteries is overly dependent on China

BMW’s chief executive officer, said companies need not be too reliant on a few select countries by focusing on EVs and that there’s still a market out there for ICEs.

As EV business soars in China, it faces see the most number of Fires seen in EV's.

- In China, 640 EVs caught fire in the first quarter of 2022, up 32 percent

- EV manufacturers has yet to get a handle on the issue of battery catching fire. It is barely summer in China, the biggest EV market in the world.

-Fire and Rescue Department of the Ministry Emergency Management’s data released on 3-April-2022, that means that there are seven EVs catching fire per day.

- There are four main types of fire accidents; catching fire while charging, catching fire while driving, catching fire while parked, or catching fire after a collision.

Regardless, the increasing number of EV fires can also be looked at from a positive point of view. The increase in EV fires is proportionate to the increase in EV ownership in China.

In February 2022, EV sales data shows that BYD sold close to 89,000 EVs, that is a year-on-year increase of 749.04 percent. Note that the data only shows for one brand, if you were to take into account other EV brands in China, the number of EVs sold will be in the 200,000s.

Do Electric Cars Catch Fire More Than Gas-Powered Vehicles?

- Hybrid vehicles: 3,474 fires per 100K sales

Although electric vehicles (EVs) may not catch fire as often as other vehicles, when they do catch fire, they can be extremely difficult to extinguish and cause much more damage. This has to do with the battery, which we’ll talk about more in a moment.

As you’ll see below, when hybrid and EVs are recalled for fire risks, battery issues are almost always the cause. Using data from 2020, researchers compared fire risk recalls for all three types of vehicles (gas, hybrid, and electric). Fire risk recalls for gas vehicles, on the other hand, cited issues like electrical shorts, fuel leaks, or braking systems – but not batteries.

China electric vehicle sales surged 154% in 2021!

While China's auto sales has been stagnating in the recent past, overall sales in the world's biggest car market rose 3.8% year-on-year for the first time since 2017. Driving this has been pure electric vehicle sales which has skyrocketed 154% last year.

Electric vehicle (EV) makers sold a total of 3.3 million units in China in 2021, up from 1.3 million in 2020, and 1.2 million in 2019. EV sales worldwide increased 69% in the first 11 months of the year, with China outpacing global growth.

So between 2020-2022(2 years 3 months) there were 86 incidents of EV car fires. And 640 fires of EVs in the first 3 months of 2022, which I guess includes all those cheap scooters, which are also a concern in India.

It's a case of poorly designed batteries than the EV tech itself, if you use cheap materials for wiring your house will certainly burn, not a problem of electricity or grid.

Electric cars shouldn’t be silent :Government
