Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Toyota's version of Maruti Suzuki's Wagon-R spotted on test in Gurgaon, it is possible that it could be an electric car, but it isn't confirmed at the moment.

The changes visible are
  1. New Led Headlamps and slightly tweaked taillights
  2. LED Fog Lamps
  3. New grill
  4. Toyota badging
  5. New front bumper and tweaked rear bumper

re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Alright, the day we are going to see the Toyota's version of Espresso is not far away eh?

But compared to their two previous futile and lazy attempts, at least this one gets more changes. But how would this go with the premium perception that Toyota has been having is something we have to wait and watch.

re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

What's left for Toyota to pick from the Maruti lineup - Alto?

On a more serious note - looks like the rumoured Maruti XL5 that has been caught on test multiple times, could have been a Toyota all along!

This could be a perfect EV for the city, given how spacious and easy to drive it is! Only suspect is safety - but the range might not be enough for highway runs anyways!

re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

If this is legit EV co-developed by Toyota and Maruti withi Maruti providing the body shell and platform and Toyota providing the electric powertrain then this would be the first time that their partnership is bearing actual fruit instead of each of them lazily pasting their badges on the other's vehicle.

The video creator though, mentions that he could hear an engine working which means it could just be another of those spot the difference versions but then, it doesn't make sense for the vehicle to be tested for such a long duration.
Also, I fail to spot a tailpipe once in the video which is generally easily spottable on a WagonR.

A WagonR EV with 150-200 km of real world range and similar power figures as the petrol powered counterpart at a price tag of 7-9 lakh rupees makes quite a lot of sense as a city runabout.

Hope that it is indeed an EV and not another attempt at rebadging. Maybe a 3 star NCAP instead of 2 would also be appreciable but I guess that is too much to ask for.

re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

In the video posted I can not see the tailpipe. So seems like it is the electric version. We can see it has LED taillights and headlights which could suggest it to be an Electric Car (not compulsorily though). Also, even the foglamps are LED's. When was the last time you saw LED foglamps, headlights and taillights in a 5-7 lakh hatchback? This could have been done to reduce the power consumption and thus increase the range a bit.

If we take a close look at the video we can see that there is a silver-coloured thing (battery pack?) placed where the fuel tank usually sits in a Wagonr.

Compare this with our usual Wagonr.

The fuel tank is clearly placed much above than the silver-coloured thing. Again it could be that the bumpers are a bit shorter than the Suzuki's version, but I think this is an electric car.

re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Great to see the partnership moving beyond rebadging .

The radiator grille is too slim for a petrol engine, especially for a Toyota - a company which will never compromise on mechanical purity for aesthetics. Sure looks like an EV based on the pictures & comments above. I echo Crazy Driver's thoughts. The WagonR will be a perfect platform to start off their electric car innings with. Practical, light (good for range), vertical height (to place battery below), cheap to build (allowing an EV version to be relatively well-priced) and enormous brand equity. Maruti-Toyota choosing to electrify a WagonR would make a loud statement as the WagonR nameplate is H-U-G-E and Maruti wouldn't bet new tech on it unless they were sure. Similar to Ford & the F150 Lightning or Mustang Mach-E. No rubbish "ID" whatever brands like VW.

Is it me or anyone else in group thinks the front look more like Tesla's.
Once I have seen now it is hard to un-see.

The XL sized flap where the fuel tank lid is usually located also suggests that it could be an EV.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Atlast, first step towards something substantial for the Indian market from the partnership. Still disappointed that the JDM WagonR BEV didn't make it to production in India.

Wishlist
- Price it at ~₹ 9 lakhs.
- A real life range of 100-150kms is more than enough for a city runabout.
- Don't dumb it down for increased range. Keep it as peppy as atleast the WagonR 1.2
- Revamp the interiors. Lost hope on the dashboard design, as even the next gen Celerio has the stupid dashboard design. Atleast change the seats to proper comfy ones.

Still can't understand why Toyota patented the Daihatsu based Agya design and name in India. That too for EVs. Also is it because Maruti-Toyota couldn't control the costs and find it hard to price a BEV below 12 lakhs? And branding it as a Toyota to soften the inevitable price shock??

Felt the same. Before, the spy pics of the XL5 seemed like trying to imitate the latest crossover styling trend. But now with the EV news, it looks just like a Tesla front end!!!

Considering Toyota's views on BEV's, I think this could be a Hybrid. Maruti has also made statements saying BEV's will be too expensive for the mass market.

Whatever it may be, good to see the market leader take some initiative to bring in more 'sustainable' products.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

If this Toyota is indeed an electric one, then the market is going to soon have the affordable EV’s and that’s the most heartening part. Most electric vehicles have this identical design cues in the front these days and this one is no different. Toyota and Suzuki have taken rebadging to the next level but Indian market will take these re badging affair in a mildly different manner for sure.

Here it is - Toyota Electric Car (Wagon R EV) Spied Undisguised In India.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV-1.jpg

High price and relatively low expected sales – which would effectively make it a niche product. And that is where Toyota will likely take a lead in introduction of the sub ₹ 10 lakh EV.
Maruti Suzuki's version of this EV will follow at a later date.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

Good move by Toyota/Maruti to select Wagon R platform for their first EV in India. It's spacious, compact, a proven model and can hold a sizable battery.

The car looks production ready. Will we see the launch in 2021?

Hope Toyota doesn't price it a premium. A good city car with 150-200Km range around 8-9L will definitely find a lot of takers.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R spotted as a Toyota | Could be an EV

First of all its WAGON-R. Half battle won. Its a master stroke I would say. The boring bread box is a huge brand ambassador for being practical and no nonsense. Good to see the partnership working on a sustainable and futuristic model.

Price it around 9L and see it taking off. The EV's best seller, Nexon has a serious competitor.

Toyota Hyryder is the likely name of this EV.
