MG Air electric car spied testing in India (page 3)

MG Motor India could launch its second all-electric model in India in the next 2 years. According to President and MD Rajeev Chaba, the new model could be priced below Rs. 20 lakh.

At present, MG offers the ZS EV in India, which competes with the Hyundai Kona. The car uses an electric motor that has an output of 141 BHP and 353 Nm. It is powered by a 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that is said to have a maximum range of up to 419 km.

The lithium-ion battery can be charged to 100% of its capacity in 6-8 hours using an AC charger and to 80% in 50 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. The carmaker has sold around 3,000 units of the ZS EV in India.

With a new sub-Rs. 20 lakh EV, MG could take on the popular Tata Nexon EV in the Indian market.

This should happen sooner than later. The upcoming Astor should be launch with ICE as well as EV powertrain.
This will push Tata, Mahindra and Hyundai to improve their offerings and launch competitive new products quickly.

re: MG Air electric car spied testing in India (page 3)

My only wish is they increase the range a bit more or atleast offer with same range as ZS EV.

ZS's range is optimum for long inter city/intra city rides too. Something of a 500+ km range will be a huge feat and may shift the momentum in favour of EVs.

The Astor is nothing but rebadged ZS with non electric powertrain. The electric Astor already exists as the ZS EV in Indian market.

There hasn’t been any news on what electric models MG would bring in future. The only other electric car MG presently has in UK lineup is the MG5 estate, which for all intents and purposes of being a wagon, won’t make it to our shores.

It would either be a ground up EV or an electric version of crossovers positioned below ZS (like the MG3)

Or it could be some rebadged SAIC model just like the ZS and Hector, sold under MG brand.

MG Motor is readying an entry-level EV for the Indian market based on sister brand Wuling’s Air EV.

The radical two-door vehicle is likely to make its debut at the Auto Expo in January 2023.

MG to tweak Air EV for India

MG EV for India to be shorter than the Alto

To get locally sourced battery pack

The car will have a battery pack capacity of around 20kWh to 25kWh, which should offer a real world driving range of 150km. Power output would stand at 40hp.

Likely to be priced from Rs 10 lakh

To be packed with latest on-board tech

Expected to go on sale mid-2023

Makes for a perfect city runabout for someone who needs a second car.
But starting from 10 lakhs onwards is a bit steep. The Punch EV IMO would have been targeting the same bracket.

IIrc, Wuling is priced at around 4,000 US dollars in China. MG has a factory here, if they truly want to revolutionize the Indian EV scene and become a market leader they should price it near Alto. Anything near 120km range will be wonderful for daily office goers in tier II and tier III cities, people there generally lives inside a radius of 10 km of office and with such small size it will be a breeze to park in cities with huge population density.

The Nano we wanted, but didn't get.

The price is sure steep, they can surely compromise on 2-3 lakhs and get the volumes. There is a good market for a BEV quadricycle like vehicle. Preferably ~5 lakhs. Mahindra Atom, where art thou?

re: MG Air electric car spied testing in India (page 3)

In 5 to 10 lakhs range this would be a hit!! As a cost effective solution it may sell well.

However, most reports state that MG is looking at 10 to 15 Lakhs price range. For that money Nexon will remain a better family car no doubt. At such high price point for 2 door small car, it may face the fate of small Mahindra EV cars which we at times curse on roads for blocking the way by going at 20kmph on the right most speed lanes (if at all you come across one!) Or else like Nano.

re: MG Air electric car spied testing in India (page 3)

It's amusing that the masses keep expecting a low-cost small EV, but whenever some manufacturer plans to launch one, it ends up getting compared with its/similar sized ICE variant and relative lack of features/space, when compared to a similarly priced ICE car is decried!
We also must not forget that Tata Nano was COTY 2009 on team bhp-being the genuinely well engineered and VFM offering that it was. It however couldn't keep pace with the market expectations-it never became the aspirational product that it was meant to be, for any section of the car-buying society. IMHO, unless MG marketing team weaves its magic, and scores additional brownie points such as magnificent aftersales support etc, it is likely to lead to a similar debacle as Nano.

10 Lakhs for this shape? No way! That too for two door hatchback. Two door cars are hugely-hugely impractical for middle class. This article says this is shorter than an Alto. Woah. I don't understand which type of customers are they trying to focus on here?

People who can afford to spend 10 lakhs can stretch a bit more and check cars like Nexon EV. Even for those who are on strict budget of 10 Lakhs can go for Tigor EV.

I feel this would be a dud in our market.

This is good, except proposed pricing.

Also this may push Tata to resurrect Nano with electric motor. Until charging networks mature, EVs for short runabouts which most of cars do is excellent.

An article popped up in my feed from cartoq. Some new car manufacturer launching something similar for 4 to 5 lacs by mid 2023. They are asking for 2000 booking amount. I dunno if this is legit or not.

It doesn't seems to be a SPAM. I booked one. After that a QR code appeared for Payment through UPI APP. I don't use any UPI APP, so requested for Bank Account details. They sent me their Kotak Bank Cheque Photo
