Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has outsold the petrol-powered Mustang model for the first time ever. According to Ford's sales figures for the month of June, the electric Mustang registered 2,465 units of sales, compared to its petrol-powered sibling which clocked a slightly lower 2,240 units.

Ford also announced that the sales of its electrified vehicles (pure electric & hybrid), grew by 117 percent in June. This allowed the American brand to close the first half with sales of 56,570 units - a new record. Among these, the Mustang Mach-E is said to have contributed 12,975 units, while F-150 hybrid, Escape Hybrid and Plug-in hybrid models brought in the remaining sales.

While the month of June did see the Mustang Mach-E register higher sales, the petrol-powered sibling still leads the way in terms of sales numbers for the first half of 2021. The petrol-powered Ford Mustang has registered a little over 31,000 units in the first 6 months, while the Mach-E comes in with 12,975 units.

Having said that, Ford is still excited about the Mustang Mach-E sales. The company stated that the Mach-E is selling as soon as it arrives at the dealerships.

Truly ironic!

An iconic ICE car's EV version is outselling the icon.

Great news for automakers if the trend continues and gets more options for customers.

Great going Ford.
Good to see the EV sales growing. With the fuel prices at record high, a move to EV was always on the card.

Hopefully we will see more EVs launch in India.

I am not sure why this vehicle is being branded as a 'Mustang'.
It doesn't look like a Mustang, doesn't sound like one.
And why does it have to be jacked up, like a crossover hatch?

Re: Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

Irrelevant headline.

The Mustang Mach E is a pretty practical SUV which families can use, but the regular Mustang is a 'toy' that everyone can't afford.

Ford did a wonderful job by branding their first proper EV as Mustang. By branding it as Mustang they got much more publicity (most of it is for free) than they would have otherwise got with a new name. Also, Ford was able to justify its higher price because of the Mustang branding. Sooner or later, all the Mustangs will be electric anyway.

Ford also did a great job by naming their EV pickup as F150 Lightning instead of naming it just "Ford Lightning".

Re: Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

This is a trend that all car makers are increasingly getting ready for in US market. Ford has unveiled its (america's) best seller F150 truck in its electric avatar F150 lighting. GM is also getting very punchy in the EV market.
And with new entrants making a beeline for electric car the EV market is surely going to get super hot
Tesla will have competition but will others match what Tesla already has achieved is the biggest question.

I was borderline offended as well when I heard about it's proposed name. But after seeing it in person, I have changed my views about the branding. The Mach E is an absolute stunner as far as looks are concerned. You can spend all day looking at its nicely chiseled muscular stance. The rear 3/4 looks very Mustang-like. I am just happy to see Ford speak the language of the enthusiasts in their recent launches. Mach E, Bronco, F150 Lightning and then the Maverick. More power to them.

In the days of refrigerator-like looking Tesla, Hyundai and Nissan electric cars, Mach E is a breath of fresh air.

Marketing & eyeballs, man. Without "Mustang" branding, the car would've gotten 10% of the attention it did (similar reason why 'Safari' was used for the 3-row FWD Harrier).

Back on topic, this is quite a moment. With cars like this and the electric F150, Ford is slowly & steadily becoming a mainstream maker of EVs, beating many others in the race. I also appreciate their execution. Whoever has experienced the Mach E has mostly positive things to say about it (my sources = Reddit & Jalopnik). Ford got a lot of flack for trimming their product line and getting rid of smaller cars, but their shrunken portfolio does show more focus, quality & execution.

IMHO, it is indeed better to sell 5 great cars than 12 mediocre ones. Kia primarily sells 2 cars in India and is either no.4 or no.5 on the charts!

Re: Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

I've said it earlier and will say it again - the way forward for electric cars to gain traction is to achieve at least 30% conversion rate among the top-10 cars. For too long EVs were standalone cars. Partly because the poster child - Tesla - was a new entrant. The thought process is changing considerably and ICE cars are getting EV powertrains. The MG ZS, Nexon etc. are cars with substantial sales as ICE variants. If their EV variants could catch up, there's nothing like it. The Wagon R based EV could just be the one.
Think about it... A Tesla minus all the driver assist features, sunroofs etc. could cost USD 10-15K lesser and may look value buy in comparison with ICE editions of Accord/Camry etc. But then Tesla has differentiated itself as a premium player and may not be interested to play in the mass market. It is for others to fill this space.
The one problem I can see here is that the EV components should substitute ICE components to achieve price parity. Which will work in niche cars with expensive engines flawlessly. For a Wagon R with about 2 lakhs worth of ICE components in it, a direct substitution with EV components will yield a 100-120 km range perhaps. Not at all ideal.

Re: Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

This headline is exactly why they branded this EV as Mustang. They are capitalizing on their own nameplate to gain more penetration in the EV segment. Like others have said this vehicle is in no way a Mustang. Had it come in the body shape of the traditional Mustang with EV technology then it is fine. This however is a practical everyday 4 door cross over shaped vehicle that is bound to be picked up by families. Also the guys who couldn't get the pony car in it's ICE avatar this is a chance to own the nameplate, hence the increased sales.

Things can be relevant when the same avatar outsells its ICE counterpart. For example the EV Nexon outselling the normal ICE Nexon or the electric F150 gaining more sales than the gasoline one.

Re: Electric Ford Mustang outsells petrol Mustang for the first time ever!

While the EV is named Mustang, its not exactly Apple to apples comparison between and RWD Muscle Car and a 4-door Electric SUV. (In an SUC crazy global market)

Once the initial review came out which were overall positive, it was obvious that the EV would globally outsell the Mustang Muscle car.

What they should actually be telling us is their actual vs projected sales they had in mind. If it has outsold their initial projection, then its a proper success.

As far as the EV goes, I think its a great car. Looks and drives good with well appointed interiors and features. There are small gripes like the lack of door handles, but I don't think thr average buyer cares anymore if he has a big touch screen.

Petrol fragrance from Ford.

Ford has created a premium fragrance for those who crave the performance of the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E GT yet still hold a fondness for the evocative smells of traditional petrol cars.

In a Ford-commissioned survey, one in five drivers said the smell of petrol is what they’d miss most when swapping to an electric vehicle, with almost 70 per cent claiming they would miss the smell of petrol to some degree. Petrol also ranked as a more popular scent than both wine and cheese, and almost identically to the smell of new books.

The new scent is designed to help usher these drivers into the future of driving through their sense of smell. Rather than just smelling like petrol though, Mach-Eau is designed to please the nose of any wearer; a high-end fragrance that fuses smoky accords, aspects of rubber and even an ‘animal’ element to give a nod to the Mustang heritage."
