For Mahindra if this works out as per plan they take a huge chunk out of TATA’s share.
Insider sources tell me that Enyaq is being evaluated for testing in India. Very soon it might as well be on the sale in our market.

If there would be a future collaboration between these 2 companies to make an India-specific EV, I can confidently say that it would be a blast!
Understanding of the Indian market by Mahindra combined with the technology and quality of a Volkswagen would result in a beautiful well-made vehicle for India!
I hope the current collaboration between them turns out to be fruitful and maybe see some mega-projects for India in the future.

I'm all for manufacturers collaborating to churn out better products, but a word of caution to Mahindra, don't pickup their ABS sensors too. Just kidding.

Re: Mahindra and Volkswagen to collaborate on Electric Vehicle Platform

It seems Mahindra is keeping it’s reputation of failed joint ventures intact that’s why Japanese duo Suzuki-Toyota have pulled it well in india.

Last year at a global event on 15th August 2022 Volkswagen and Mahindra announced strategic alliance to accelerate electrification of Indian automotive market and as per press release :

The electric SUVs will be launched on the all new INGLO platform architecture and envisaged to be equipped with MEB components including the electric drivetrain, the battery system and battery cells. The Term Sheet covers all major commercial and technical terms along with a path to the potential localization of the battery system. The final supply agreement will be negotiated in a continued constructive and legally compliant way by the end of 2022.

It seems Platform will remain shared from VW ,electric drivetrain from Valeo & Battery cells from Byd.

What is it with Mahindra and breaking of partnerships /joint ventures. Till date they have called it off with Renault, Ford and now VW. Their actions remind me of a Hollywood movie - "Runaway bride"

They really need to get their act together and stopping wasting time and opportunity with failed JVs

Re: Mahindra and Volkswagen to collaborate on Electric Vehicle Platform

Mahindra Thar.e, BE EVs to be powered by VW APP550 electric motor.

The next-generation motor comes with a significant step up in performance as well as thermal efficiency.

Quote:
The new APP550 electric motor delivers 210kW (286hp) and a maximum of 550Nm of torque, a significant step up from the previous motor that produced 150kW (201hp) and 310Nm of torque.

The current is a decisive factor for the power of an electric drive unit, for which VW employed an improved inverter, which is able to supply the high phase currents needed for greater power, acting as the controlling ‘brain’ in the powertrain.

The APP550 electric drive unit achieves its higher torque output thanks to an enhanced stator with a higher effective number of windings and a larger wire cross-section. Additionally, the rotor comes equipped with more powerful magnets that have a higher load capacity. The electric drive unit also required additional reinforcing to withstand the higher power and torque outputs.

Thermal management is key for higher efficiency of an electric drive unit – the APP550 motor operates without an electrically driven oil pump, and is instead able to independently cool itself via the gear wheels of the gearbox and specially formed components for oil supply and distribution. The heated oil is cooled by the vehicle’s coolant circuit, which keeps the drive at operating temperature. The outside of the stator is equipped with a water heat sink.
Volkswagen could localise the APP550 motor in India
If the combined volumes of Mahindra EVs, and future VW and Skoda EVs (which will use the same motor) are good, VW may look at localising the motor. Volkswagen has stated that though it is open to supplying to other automakers in India.

Volkswagen will not share its EV platform with Mahindra.

Quote:
The company had engaged in a discussion with homegrown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra to explore possibilities of jointly developing a small electric vehicle platform, but has decided to go on its own.

With Volkswagen's classic superiority arrogance and Mahindra's luck in JVs, this doesn't surprise.

Though this has made Mahindra's BEV future worrying.

Well well well. Interesting how this turns out for Mahindra. I was looking forward to Mahindra BEVs. Could they be further delayed?

Why Mahindra why? What is with their JVs falling out after a few months of them being announced? There needs to be a deeper analysis on this, this is not the first time their JV has fallen through.

A person who is quite close to these things privately told me that corporate ego's played large part in scuppering the tech agreement.
This person may be right: I remember reading an article, on a similar vein, when the Mahindra - Ford deal fell through, when retired Mahindra MD, Dr. Goenka had rued the Ford-M&M deal breakdown and had said that "there is nothing that cannot be resolved throught dialogue".
If GM & Toyota can work together, if Sony & Honda can build a car, if Volvo & Eicher can work in sync, I do not think there is any insurmountable reason/s that can prevent M&M and others into joining forces. Differences will always be there; technical, administrative, commercial, legal etc. Finally it is the "will and resolve" of the top guys to make it happen by putting their best foot forward.

EDIT:
PS: I wouldn't be surprised if significant people resign from M&M now, particularly those who had joined from other notable OEM's!

Re: Mahindra and Volkswagen to collaborate on Electric Vehicle Platform

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India EV plans:

- The first SUV EV is likely to get a Volkswagen badge – with a potential of volumes of 5,0000 units – for both domestic and export markets.

- Skoda's mainstream EV alternative is planned to follow Volkswagen's product.

- Skoda Auto plans to localise the MEB21G architecture in the country, which is likely to spawn multiple SUVs for both, the Volkswagen and Skoda brands, with a significant export potential over a lifecycle

- The brand has lined up an investment of Euro 180 billion (about Rs 15,81,840 crore) in the next five years and every country, including India, is staking a claim for a share.

-The localisation move will call for an additional investment of at least Euro 1 billion (about Rs 9,183 crore), if one were to go by the direction of the Volkswagen brand’s global CEO concerning the Indian market.

-The go-ahead for the EV appears to be from the series of meetings that have taken place in India and Europe over the last year or so.

- VW's PEAK EV project to bring EV SUV to India by 2026

Mahindra INGLO-based EVs to use Volkswagen batteries.

Volkswagen Group, M&M sign supply agreement on components of Volkswagen´s MEB for Mahindra’s INGLO platform.

The deal covers the supply of certain electric components as well as unified cells.

Quote:
The deal covers the supply of certain electric components as well as unified cells. With the agreement, Volkswagen and Mahindra are further deepening their collaboration which started with a partnering agreement and a term sheet in 2022. Both companies will continue to evaluate a potential expansion of the collaboration.
Quote:
Mahindra will be the first external partner to use the groundbreaking unified cell concept, the core element of Volkswagens battery strategy. The supply agreement will run over several years and will have a total volume of about 50 GWh over lifetime. Volkswagen Group and Mahindra aim to strengthen their e-mobility footprint in the Indian automotive market and accelerate the electrification in the region.
The partnership with Mahindra is led by Volkswagen Group Technology and its “Platform Business” unit in close cooperation with Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.
