Maruti Suzuki is developing an all-electric SUV (codenamed: YY8), and the latest information suggests that the car could debut during the 2024 festive season.



Maruti Suzuki is said to have floated RFQs (Request for Quotation) for their upcoming YY8 electric SUV. Their timelines suggest a Dusshera or Diwali launch in 2024.

Suzuki in Japan is said to be leading the development of the YY8 electric SUV. The car is believed to have been benchmarked against the Nissan Leaf and Peugeot e2008. It has a tentative curb weight of 2,000 kg and could ride on 18-inch wheels.

Media reports suggest that the YY8 will be based on the 27PL 'skateboard platform' derived from Toyota’s 40PL architecture. The car could be offered in single and dual-motor configurations, with a maximum range of up to 500 km.

This is good news, though its good 2 - 2.5 years away. While China has tens of electric cars manufacturers doing really good while many more with a promising future, even non car makers like Xiaomi jumping in (link (Xiaomi electric car spied for the first time)), the Indian electric car market which is set to blow up sooner than we realise, it is only good that the biggest car maker in India aligns their plans with the inevitable. They are late, but better than never.

Reference pricing for Nissan Leaf and Peugeot 2008 are in the 30L plus range. Nice to seen Maruti efforts to change its positioning in the Indian market. It would be interesting to see how this is received.

Maruti YY8 electric SUV concept to debut at Auto Expo 2023

Maruti Suzuki will take the wraps off an electric SUV concept at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023. Codenamed YY8, the new concept will preview the brand’s first all-electric model.



According to media reports, the Maruti YY8 is an all-electric mid-size SUV that is being co-developed with Toyota. It is said to be based on the 27PL platform derived from Toyota’s 40PL global architecture. The car will measure over 4.2 metres in length and will have a wheelbase of 2.7 metres.

The Maruti YY8 electric SUV is likely to use LFP blade cell batteries sourced from China-based BYD. The battery could come in two versions – a 48 kWh with a range of around 400 km and a 59 kWh unit offering a maximum range of 500 km.

Reports also indicate that the Maruti YY8 electric SUV could be launched by early 2025 at a price tag of around Rs 13-15 lakh.

Wow an EV with 48 kWh battery for 13 laks. Even more amazing is a 59 kWh battery EV around 15laks!
And we will be seeing these cars in 2025, which in today's prices taking into account the annual inflation should be couple of lakhs less, i.e Tiago EV money!

IIRC, we read about similar rumour from autocar some 4 years back about Wagon R EV for 7lakhs and >20kwh battery. After an year another rumour said Wagon R EV will cost 12lakhs, and finally we know what happened to that project.

This is again similar rumour from autocar, they don't even sell a 4.2mtr ICE SUVs for 13lakhs, let's take this rumour with a grain of salt. These rumours are planted to stay in news, free marketing.

Maruti Suzuki eVX, the first EV for 2025.

- The electric SUV will be powered by a 60kWh battery pack with a claimed electric range of 550km.
- Features a dual motor setup for a 4x4 drivetrain
- eVX SUV concept based on dedicated platform
- 4,300mm length
- This new born-EV platform will be jointly developed with Toyota and will also spawn its version.
- This new platform will give rise to a “range of future full-EV models” from the brand in the coming years
- 4,300mm long, 1,800mm wide and 1,600mm high, which is almost the size of the current-gen Creta. This new SUV will have a 2,700mm wheelbase and thanks to the born-EV architecture, cabin space is expected to be revolutionary.
- There will be an entry-level version as well that will come with a smaller battery of around 48kWh and around 400km of real-world range.

Very positive news. While Suzuki does greatly benefit in partnering with Toyota, it does not have to follow the Japanese giants lethargic ev performance. Time for Suzuki to be shrewd for it's own survival. While I've never been a great fan of maruti, this reveal and the recent export performance have really gained one's respect.

Maruti Suzuki to produce 1.5 million electrified vehicles by 2031.

Of the set target of four million units by 2030, six lakh units will be EVs and over 1 million hybrid.
