Re: BYD Seal : A Close Look

I took a long test drive of about 25Kms in the BYD Seal yesterday.

Here are my observations.

Positives:
  • Solid build quality, though I would rate it slightly below the Germans. But not a dealbreaker.
  • Quality of interiors is top notch, very easy to find a comfortable driving position.
  • Though it’s over 4.8M long, masks it’s size very well.
  • Excellent mile munching ability and with over 500+kms range even at high speeds, range anxiety is a distant memory.
  • Ample power in all modes, will never feel inadequate.
  • Regen can be set to dynamic which is dependent on speed, traffic conditions and inclination (yes, there is a built-in inclinometer)
  • Excellent clarity from the 360-degree cameras.
  • Seats are very supportive with good lateral and lumbar support.

Negatives:
  • Blunt throttle response which is noticeable in all modes.
  • Hated the turn indicator sound and various chimes, it will be a pain.
  • No built-in maps and navigation, which is a big miss for a car in this segment.
  • Software was a big buggy.
  • Most of the controls are through the main screen, which is a major distraction and a safety concern.
  • HUD is useless in bright light and only displays current speed.
  • I would have preferred a proper instrument cluster; this one is small and is busy with too much information on a small screen.
  • Though I didn’t scrape anywhere, it will be a pain on slightly larger speed breakers and on bad roads.

Personally I will hold off on my booking. While it’s a great car, I cannot have it as my daily drive. A bit more ground clearance would have been good.
Also with a limited numbers sold in India, spares and parts availability might be an issue.

Besides with the new EV policy, the prices of many CBU EVs might come down.

1. You can change the sound of the indicator tick within vehicle settings and make it a more conventional "Tick tick" sound.

2. No matter what inbuilt navigation system any vehicle uses, Google Maps will be superior 10/10 times; rendering it useless. The Seal has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so that shouldn't be a problem. I don't remember the last time anyone I know used a car's built in navigation.

Just sharing my 2 cents!

1. Yes, the volume is too much even at lower settings.

2. Since there is no wireless android auto, connecting the phone everytime is a chore. Besides, ZS EV comes with MapmyIndia and is quite good and doesn't optimise for time and guide one down narrow roads like Google maps.

Simple things like this! It doesn't take too much effort really and goes a long way to show that they aren't taking anything for granted and that India is an important market for them. Bodes well for what they are setting out to do.

Contrasting to some manufacturers who take step-motherly approach towards our Country.

Good job, I say! More can take a page from this.

Blunt throttle response but ample power in all modes. Is it like there is a lag to gain momentum, despite being an EV? Somehow, I feel this as contradictory. Could you elaborate on?

I meant the initial throttle response is muted, it is not as sharp as in other EVs.

Re: BYD Seal : A Close Look

Thanks for your sharing your views on the car. I am interested in taking a test drive and probably booking the car when I am in India next.

Is BYD going to launch the performance version of the Seal?

Also, wired Android Auto is a pain but a wired to wireless adapter is an easy and cheap fix.

Performance version has already been launched in India with dual motor AWD, 530ps, 670nm and 0-100 in 3.8 for ₹53L ex-showroom.

The car already gets wireless Android Auto. Only CarPlay is wired.

From which angle does this Atlantis grey looks grey, looks like a darker shade of Arctic blue. Should have been proper grey.

In public pictures of Atlantis grey, it is showing up as grey with a blue tint. But you are right, in some, blue is over powering grey. Probably unless we see in real, we won't be sure.

Re: BYD Seal : A Close Look

The car has a large 16 inch touchscreen that can rotate. I have seen similar large screen in MG car as well.

I have a question here.
Don't these large screens act as a distraction while driving?
Similarly, why would you need a touchscreen that can rotate? How would it be helpful?
