Are you sure? In my opinion it's the other way round. Canon is around 1.5k cheaper than Nikon. I m using 1100D and find it decent enough. Still a lot to learn though. Don't know about Nikon though. Both are decent entry level slrs in my opinion. Visit a showroom and have a feel of both and decide.

Don't pixel peep. A 7MP more than does the job for regular hobbyist.

Both are competent products, pick any. It won't disappoint you. Both systems have wide range of lens available.

I bought the Nikon D3100 in August 2011 for Rs.27K.
Extremely satisfied with it.

It may be worthwhile to check out the recently released D3200 with a 24MP (wow!) sensor. Wait for it before making the final decision

Congratulations R2D2, I hope your D800/D4 are not among the one that have a lock up issue acknowledged by Nikon. Hopefully this one can be fixed with a firmware update unlike the black tape (quite an awesome idea) on the 5dMKIII for light leak issue.

Thanks buddy HW. Yes I am aware of to lock up and other issues including the D800 battery recall. In the run up to the delivery of the camera(s) I was very keenly keeping a track of user feedback on photo forums including pdonline and dpreview. So far my cameras are behaving themselves on the lockup. And the D800 battery was not from the recall affected lot. So far so good. Touch wood! :) But it is a bit disappointing to see Nikon and Canon release products with QA issues. These giants are obviously not infallible.

It was launched in India last month. Not sure about the availability and price. The d3200 supposedly uses the same sensor as the Sony NEX7 with Nikon's tweaks and their Expeed engine.

These companies seem to have a shift in their approach from building top of the line camera to getting first to the market. The pressure of competition seems to be getting them.

Its good products that eventually stay in the market and not some shoddily built and badly tested ones.

Oh believe me they are not shoddily built but have chinks in the proverbial armour. manufacturers have too much to lose if they sell badly built high end bodies. The biggest driver for nearly all Japanese companies to release products ASAP has been the slowdown and/or loss of business due to the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011

But let's not rush to condemn them. Sad fact is QA issues are expected in a product that is mass produced, electronics, cars, etc the first few batches are prone to QA problems. It is just that the large volume of units, suspect commercial pressures + the larger than life image of the 2 giants Nikon and Canon make them them susceptible to bashing. :-) IMHO only please.

Which lens to go for?Canon 55-250 IS II or 70-300 USM
How about sigma,tamron 70-300mm?

Go for the 55-250. I have the lens, its reasonably sharp through the range and even on my 7D 18mp sensor. You can correct CA (negligible though) in Canons DPP.

70-300 is slightly soft from 250mm onwards.

I have the Tamron 70-300 mm as well. Its good only for portrait / macro. Hopelessly soft after 230 mm. If you have bright objects in frame, it produces purple/blue fringing and outdoors you get a lot of lateral CA. Not worth at all, if your photos usually have lot of highlights and contrasty edges.

Edit: Tamron lenses generally have piece-to- piece variations. Thorough check needed before you buy.

Could you please post few clicks you did with 250mm and tamero(especially tameron macro).

Please don't have a doubt - Canon lens is superior by miles. The extra moneys worth is seen when you see the results. Click on the bird image to get a larger view (the twig was shaking in the wind, and handheld shot - possible to get a sharper image than this).
