Team-BHP - The DSLR Thread

^^^ I just bought a D90 body as i had couple of Nikon 15 year old Lenses which seem to fit only on D90 and D7000. I did a comparison of the two when i was at the store and found the D90 did fit my use better and was slightly cheaper.

Once i am comfortable with this i would possibly upgrade to new age body and lenses so D90 seemed like a wonderful choice. Intend to use it in my Tadoba trip and will post some pictures soon.

I fling with photography started in 1996 when i bought by N70 with two lenses and then later stopped as it was quiet expensive and cumbersome to experiment with settings and then wait for the films to be developed, also was a pain to change ISO ratings midway through the shoot. Now with Digital age this does not seem to be a issue at all. Possibly best time to pick up a DSLR and experiment.

If money is not a criteria, get the D7000. D7000 and D90 have inbuilt focus motors. So your old manual lens will work on 'em.

My preference D7000 followed by D90 followed by D5100.

I was mulling over buying a DSLR or a high end P&S for my Europe trip. I bought a Nikon Coolpix P510 High end P&S and had absolutely no regrets. It gave fantastic results and didn't have to lug around multiple lenses and the hassle of changing them etc. I also invested in a 32 GB Class 10 SDHC card and a Benro 660 Tripod (which was too bulky for the trip; so was left behind). Shot all pics in 16 MP Fine quality and pics speak for themselves.

I think it still depends on your shooting needs. By the way, very good output from the camera! pictures are neat.

Thanks, Clevermax. You are right. My needs were a good P&S with a big optical zoom and I looked no further than the P510 with a 42X Optical zoom. All these pics were shot in the auto mode. It also saved me a lot of cash too costing Rs.23232 as against DSLR which would have been at least double with a good lens.

Hi,

This is one of my queries again for the Sony range. I am planning on buying a prime lens for portrait photography. Now I am in two minds between buying a used Minolta 50mm 1.7 AF and the brand new Sony 50mm DT 1.8 lens.

What are the pros and cons of both the lenses? My cousin in UK has checked out the used Minolta there and it is costing around 70 to 90 GBP and the Sony brand new one costs around Rs 7500 here. So pricewise both are pretty much the same. Only thing is that the Minolta will be 20 years or more older and used and the Sony would be brand new. But, Minolta is faster by one stop than the Sony. And some of the reviews on the net says the Minolta to be better in output, but Sony has better optics.

Considering this, pls suggest what shall I do? I have a slight inclination to go for the Sony as it will be brand new and with Sony India warranty. But, is the Minolta IQ far superior than Sony despite being an older model? Or this slightly larger aperture in Minolta 1.7 a makes big difference in IQ? My need is general portrait with a very good bokeh. So if someone can suggest any other lens also it all right.

I would have taken the offer, if I didn't have the camera already. The score ain't too bad for the seller.
In my last 6 years with ebay, I never had a disappointing experience. Infact, on 20th June itself I ordered the Canon 50mmF/1.8 from Ebay, and recieved it already yesterday.
Have ordered few more things yesterday. I was looking at ebay, as I got a 7.5% discount coupon valid for just 2 days:D.
Damn , I should have delayed my lens purchase:Frustrati, got only 5% off on that.
