Cheaper and I know it's a reliable brand.

Also I know transcend makes a 32GB class 6 card.

I second your thoughts. Lexar is definitely a very reliable brand. But, I'd suggest not to go with capacities larger than 8gb. If something goes wrong which again is very rare, you might end up loosing all photographs which in the case would be a lot of them since a 16gb card would hold a lot of them. It's more safer to have 2 8GB cards than a single 16gb card.

Regards,

Anirban.

You are advising I go for the 16GB? The 8 GB Lexar is $35 vs the $45 price of the sandisk.

And do I need to buy a Lexar card reader or any will do? I see a blue proton card reader on ebay for $5.

Amazon.com: BlueProton USB 2.0 6-in-1 Single Slot Memory Card Reader Writer for SD SDHC MiniSD MMC rsMMC (BLACK): BlueProton

The 8 Gb Lexar that I quoted above is a class 4. The price for the 8 gb is $40 after a mail in rebate.

Lexar | 8GB Professional 133x Secure Digital | SD8GB-133-381

Upgraded firmware of my Canon 450D from 1.0.9 to 1.1.0 :D Couldnt resist it, though the only listed change is for a new variety of flash hardware. Takes couple of minutes thats all.

Canon EOS REBEL XSi / 450D Firmware Download-E

Quote:

What has been changed in Version 1.1.0 of the firmware?

It includes the following improvements:

Supports AF assist beam feature of the new flash, Speedlite 270 EX, which is scheduled to be released in April 2009
In low light situations, the AF assist beam fires to assist with autofocusing. The AF assist beam does not fire if the firmware is Version 1.0.9 or earlier.

Still firmwares newer the better, cant help it lol

Anyone using a SB400 flashgun with their Nikon ?

I need a flashgun for indoor shots. The inbuilt flash on the D40 is good but I like to use a flashgun to bounce a bit of light for indoor shots.

Another solution to this is using studio lights. They are infact much cheaper and brighter than flash lights. Today only I was checking out Prophoto lights, the model I found very interesting was 300 D. It's a 250 watt strobe/studio light and it costs just 6000 in comparison to 18k for a Canon 470EX. Very seriously thinking of getting one of those. Do check them out.

The purchase has been done by my BIL in the US. The shop is in New York.
Can you ask your BIL about the shop? Name address etc.

One of my friend wants to buy similar combination (D60 + 18-105).

Any card reader will do.

I use an SB600 with my D40. Does everything I want, I am a happy man.

I use SB400 with my D80, occassionally. I rely more on my SB24. Thinking of replacing 400 with 900

Anirban, I agree, the studio lights are cheaper but not portable. And there are situations when the on-board flash is insufficient. You can't be lugging the studio lights and looking for AC outlets to power them..

Vivitar 285HV is quite nice.

Funny observation after moving to DSLR i have shot all of 5 pics with flash out of couple 100 shots lol If the lighting is decent i dont find the need of a flash at all.

It is compact. Today I'd get the H-16 as it would accomdate faster (read as f/2.8) lenses if I had the same need. The H-14 was slightly modified to accodate the body with battery pack and 17-55/2.8 lens attached, the H-16 would not need that.
Video bags camera bags Kata - Manufacturer of camera bags

However for your use I'd get a sling bag or a convertible like the Tamrac Aero 75/85, LowePro Fastpack 250-/350 or Kata 3N1-30. All expect the last one have room for a laptop, allow easy access to the camera while on the move (no need to put the bag down) and convert to a bakcpack for long walks. The 3N1-30 is the most compact but will only accomdate a 9-12" (Sony P series - Thinkpad X series) notebook (might even accomodate the MacBook 13") and require you to remove the body-lens combo to get the laptop out for airport security. Of the 3 I like the Kata becuase it has an add-on tripod holder that is often sold with the bag and can be left behind if not required (besides a 12" laptop is most I need when travelling anyway). Besides I am small built (almost like a lizard on a tree). On a big boy like you the Tamrac 85 or LowePro 350 would look fine.

Hey Navin, great description and guidance for newbies. I need a bag for my D90 which right now has just the 18-105mm kit lens. I see myself going for a prime lens and maybe a sb-600 flash in the near future. Maybe an additional telephoto zoom in the longer run. I was looking at the Kata H14 and the 3N1-20. Is the H14 too small to carry all the stuff I mentioned? I see a good deal online for about $70 for the H-14. The 3N1 is priced at $100.

The thing that attracts one to these particular Kata bags is the ability to pull your camera out quickly. I haven't seen similar ease in other products. Are there any Tamrac (or other good quality) bags that have similar functionality?

This hobby is has already got me spending a lot of my time and I haven't even started shooting yet :)

Added a Tiffen 67mm filter to the above.

Now all you need is the 80-400 (I know it AFs a bit slow but otherwise it is a perfect fit). Also get a nicer UVF than Tiffen. Hoya I hear is better. B&W better still.

Class 4 will allow you to shoot at 17Mbps. Class 6 will allow 24Mbps+. This using the Canon HF10/HF11/HF20 series of video cameras.

You can shoot SD video with Class 2. I have.

If you want to carry a D90 with battery pack and 18-105 atttached, 80-400 VR and SB 600 get the Kata H-16. It will be a tight fit but it can fit.

However the Kata 3N1-20/30 will give you room to grow and carry accessories like a small video camera, P&S camera, etc..

The Tamrac Aero 80/85, LowePro Fastpack 250/350 all have the quick extract facility of the Kata 3N1-20/30 (only the Kata allows you to be left or right shouldered). Other than the Aero 80 the other 3 have a dedicated pocket for a 15/17" notebook. However you can squeeze a small 9" (Sony P series) or Think pad X series into the Kata 3N1-30. Dont know enough about the Aero 80 to confirm notebook capabilities.

BTW guys my knowledge about photography is limited. Please double check my statements with more educated sources.

BTW why are they no camers for left handed people?

Thanks Navin. After much research, I ordered the Kata 3N1-20. The only equipment I have right now is the D90 +18-105 mm kit lens. Just after I ordered it I kind of realised that I'm gonna be carrying around a pretty empty camera bag for some time :)
