Its really a newbie question

I have a Nikkon D90. So far I have been deleting pictures from the memory card, using the manage functions of the Camer itself (once the card is full and after the pictures have been transferred to the laptop using Nikon Tarnsfer)

Is there any particular harm in cleaning up (deleting pictures) the card using laptop itself (say delete function in the "my computers") whilst the Camera is connected to the laptop.

Would be obliged for the "Gurus" opinion on this

You may do it, but a better way is to use the camera's "Format" command. What that does is to delete all the data and create a camera understandable file structure. At time when the computer writes to the card, the camera may not understand it and give you "card error".

As Aroy stated its good practice to do formatting of SD cards time to time. Also if you are using ViewNX (free from Nikon), you can enable delete pictures from camera' option in transfer. This will delete the pictures, once same is transferred to system.

I would desist in deleting the data in card using the computer. It is a good practice to first transfer the data, check it and save a copy before formatting the card. In my case there have been instances when in a hurry all data - on the card and in the computer, got deleted.

Agree. I transfer everything, check it's there and then reformat the SDcard. I never delete. Much healthier and prone to mishaps if you reformat. With the one assumption that you have transferred all data successfully

A query regarding photo management in Nikon D5200. In my Canon camera, I can specify that a daily folder be created, so all the photos will be stored in separate folders as per their clicking date. Is there any way I can do this in D5200? It just keeps on storing the incremental photos in the same folder.

I know I can give separate names to folders and tell the camera to store photos in a particular folder, but is there any way that the camera will automatically generate a new folder day-wise?

Not sure if it is exists in Camera, however if you use ViewNx, you have a option to copy photos based on Date taken. I use this option to get desire results with D90.

In D90 I have only option to keep number count either recycled (for every download) or kept on counting till it reaches 9999.

A query regarding Watermark in Nikon D5200. Can we do it in the camera itself or we need to do it from the computer software through laptop.

PS : Please pardon my ignorance on the topic. Very new to photography and DSLR's.

You can't watermark in-camera, you will need to do it on your computer. In-camera you can attach copyright though to your metadata.

Was google'ing about the B-E-S-T entry level DSLR and looks like, all the top searches threw D5200 as the winner. Would love to know what the experts on the forum think about it.

And somehow I feel that Nikon enjoys a better reputation in the DSLR space while Canon has a better grip in the point & shoot categories. Is it just my perception or a reality?

D5200 is a pretty good camera (so is Canon 600D). Both are available for about 35k.

Canon/Nikon are like Maruti/Hundai or Android/iOS ;)

I had the same dilemma before I choose the Canon 550D. Professional photographers preferred the Nikon whereas the others preferred the Canon. Did a lot of searches on the net and found them to be similar.

The difference was explained very simply by one professional photographer - "Saaar, the Canon shows black as black and white as white, whereas the Nikon shows both as white and our people prefer that". Fact of the matter - a lot of tamilians go to a great extent to be shown with a fair skin.

Experts who have both the cameras can throw more flashes on the matter.:D

If you are watching the FIFA world cup just check how many big lenses are white and they are Canon and the black ones should be Nikon.

Canon has better grip in telephotos though Nikon is catching up fast.

Gone bankrupt, but bought a new Nikon D7000 [body only].
With that, my DSLR gear is complete at least for another couple of years.

My D3100 wasn’t able to handle the abuse with my new Sigma 150-500mm, when handheld. Until I got the biggie, I was thinking of an upgrade only after 6 months or so.
