Team-BHP - The DSLR Thread

I bought EOS 450D 2 years back and now I want to upgrade.

I want both picture and movie function in one gadget so I'm thinking of getting a Nikon D90.

Is Nikon D-90 fine or is there anything else in this price range that you people find better than D-90.

I hope you are not expecting a standard off the shelf camcorder like output and functionality from D-90 video. They arent the same - but D-90 is lot more fun with video capture. Say goodbye to movies without Depth of field and everything in sharp focus.

Try and work through the quirks and get yourself comfortable with its video capabilities. A lot of people I know who have D-90 usually mix and match coverage from D-90 and their Sony/Panasonic/blah blah cams. Dont know anyone who has given up these two sep devices for a coverged device so far.

Coming from Nikonian, that is me, this shall surprise many. 40D, albeit less in megapixels, is cheaper than D90 and offers the same features. Since you already have the 450D, you will be able to use the lenses that you have invested in.

Changing the brand is like starting from scratch..

Cannon 1000d body only without warranty 20k
Nikon d60 with 18-55 lens without warranty 28k
Nikon d40 (not dx) with 18-55 lens without warranty 21k

which a better buy for a beginner and i may not invest for the lens later. Is it ok to buy camera without warranty? Nikon d40 at 2k1 is it a good bargain? any drawback in the camera? i am totally confused (in fact lost).

Did you check the landing page of Ebay? If not, do it, Its worth a try :-)

Yes D40 at 20k with 1yr warranty. Isn't it discontinued model?Any issues with the model? My main worry is buying camera's (not in ebay) without warranty, i am not very familiar with cameras.

There are no issues with the model as far as I know, Again would request the guru's as well to share their opinion.

D40 is a good Camera but dont you think its an age old now...it was upgraded with a D40X, then D60 and now D3000. The 6mp does not really matter but its quite old now... and if I am not wrong it sells for some 17.5K in chennai Grey market,

Canon 1000D with Non IS should be around 22K I guess. With bill and two year warranty itself it costs appx 27K and u get Canon Advantage club entry as well. They send you a DSLR Bag worth some Rs 4K...

You may also want to have a look at Sony A200 which will cost appx 26.5K with bill and 3 yr warranty. Agreed that not many lenses are available and people like to stick to Nikon or Canon but Its still a rugged DSLR

Buy a camera you can grow with.

Internet forums are littered with enthu guys who bought a DSLR because they had the money, not because they planned for it - and within 3 months, its up for sale :D

Yes that is what i don't want to be. I have read good reviews about Nikon D40 but i could not find much about Cannon 1000d other than DPreview.
Price tag of D40 is attractive but "growth" i am not sure. What is the hidden risk factor when brought grey?

Cameras may require adjustments for one or the other issue, however minor it may be, or in the worst case, repairs due to broken parts etc.; the hidden risk here is whether the ASC for a particular brand will accept a grey product which may not be registered with them or not, I am not talking of warranty here (grey procurement comes with at most dealer warranty, not manufacturer) but the willingness to accept the camera for paid repair at all.
