The DSLR Thread

+1 to all the opinions below. I dislodged my focussing screen and I thought I was in for a mirror-box replacement (12,000/-) and I went to Canon Service thinking of a bill that would cost more than the residual value of the camera. Bill came to Rs 300/- and was done within 1 hour (enough time to have a coffee in Connaught Place). On the spur of the moment, gave both my Canon lenses for calibration and cleaning as well. Overall bill was less than 1200/-. Service charges for a 5D is only some 2000/-. And their way of dealing with customers is quite good.

Don't know about Nikon, but Canon fixed my 17-55 for almost free (few hundred rs) and I had NOT got it from an authorised store.
Sometimes I guess you just get lucky, or is Canon's policy different from Nikon? |

Yes this is the place I sent my camera to.
Hi fellow BHPians,
This thread inspired me to seek amateur professionalism :D in Photography. Just bought Canon 100D with plan to add additional lens in near future. (Now days buying combo with lens cost same as buying them separately)
Selected
Brand Canon as I felt the Body material quality superior coupled with better after sales service from Canon.
Model 100D as it has everything of beginner DSLR in small size (I know the grip could be a issue but was able to hold it well) coupled with touch screen for better file management.
Was tempted to go for Nikon 5300 for its Wi-Fi feature but I am buying SD Card with Wi-Fi, which will serve the purpose.
As such Canon recommends SD card with Wi-fi of Eye-Fi brand but it cost more so deciding to go for Transcend, which is 50% cheaper. (Eye-Fi has better feature though)

Congratulations and welcome.:)
Since you have already made a decision, I won't comment on the choice of body. But would recommend that you go for a good SD card, if you are serious about preserving your images. Transcend failed me a couple of times - best to go for something more reliable such as SanDisk.
Hi
I rented a canon 60d with a 18-55mm kit to see if its good to buy. I thought of shooting a time lapse but got stuck when I found that it does not have an intervalometer like Nikon. How should I set the camera to take shots after every 10 seconds, ie. 6 shots/min.?

Thanks a lot Dada
I have not bought the SD Card, hence would now buy SanDisk. Wi-Fi is not a big issue, if its not available in SanDisk (I don't know as of now)
About Body, I know it may not be a good decision but heart won over mind. stupid:
60D at almost same price could have been a better choice I suppose.
In my opinion SanDisk Extreme Class - 10 is one of the best SDHC card in the market. It has 45MB read/write speed. ExtremePro SDHC is better with 90 MB speed but it is costlier. I use Extreme with my Nikon D7000 without any issue of bufer jam even in case of multi shots. I used to shoot in RAW (.NEF) format and it is also fast in this score also.
Regards.
Guys I need help here. A colleague is selling his D90 which is of 4 years. What could be a reasonable price here please? I have quoted 23k (body only)...

A used D7000 goes for 40K+ so around 25K or lower seems reasonable.

I had to sell my D90 last year for ~ 22K (if I remember). Wasn't getting 25K, though I tried on JJMehta.

I am not very technically inclined but the if you are comfortable with the grip, the SL1 is a good body for the price in the Canon stable. I am saying this because with both a Nikon and a Canon body + lenses kits at home, I am able to use both back to back and appreciate the differences.
However, to take advantage of the small size even further, try to buy only the STM lenses as they are lighter and preferably the 'pancake' ones among them: The EF 40 mm f/2.8 STM and the EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM. Both go for around Rs 10,000 each.
Of course, once you outgrow the pancakes and want something better in lenses, the smaller body advantage may reduce. But still nothing beats the SL1 + pancake lens in compact size except for a rangefinder or a mirrorless.

This is true for 7d, 60d might be same.
There is no inbuilt feature to do time lapse. You need to either connect it to a computer or have a remote which supports time lapse.

It requires a remote and it surely doesn't have the intervalometer. One can install magic lantern to get that feature in canon. Renting gone wrong.
