Re: The DSLR Thread

D90 still seems to be hot! I know quite a few that sold off their D90. Funny thing is they say they will be buying another D90 as second body. As far as I could dig in, i think it has to be lens compatibility.

it was supposed to go out of production a year back atleast. I think its still popular!

Must be one 9x series that got as popular as the 8x series of all niks!

Your friend needs to manually enter the name and address of the dealer.
Make sure you register using the dealer shop name give in the invoice bill.
Thanks a ton for that. Have informed my friend of the same.

Meanwhile, I went ahead and purchased a Canon 600D with the 18-55 kit lens plus bought another 50mm prime

Re: The DSLR Thread

To all those new buyers who are contemplating DSLR but getting advices to go to mirrorless.
Please use both once in hand and then buy, Do this test only after reading up triangle of Aperture , shutter and ISO because then you will be prompted to change these settings.

I have a Canon DSLR and also an Olympus EPL3,
My wife who is totally Camera noob and refuses to hear all the camera gyan still prefers Canon DSLR over Olympus EVIL because feels better in hands and easier to use as per her discription.

Till few months back I was unable to understand people who lug around a bulky DSLR and use it in auto or Av mode just as a P&S ,But probably I think this feel in hands thing prompts them to lug around the weight.
Yesterday met a lot of such people in Lalbag flower show :-)

Well Flash exposure compensation is always for external flash because internal flash always calculates and compensates.
Probably what you are asking is to optically trigger a non E-TTL flash with onboard flash and also avoid the onboard flash in the picture.

One method you can try is to cover the Onboard flash with used x-ray film it blocks visible spectrum light but allows IR , Just check if optical sensor of your slave gets triggered with IR.

Else you can make a narrow snoot with thin card board and direct it to slave flash rather then subject.

Well EPL3 is not really that much of a DSLR alternative (IMO), but cameras like Nex-6, Nex-7 or the OM-D are! They have everything that comparable DSLRs have and much more. Thats why I said, in $1000 space MLCs give serious competition to crop sensor DSLRs.

Also entry level DSLRs can also be fiddly to change settings as they also have limited number of buttons. And any interface is just all about getting used to, even the iphone

Thanks Amit. Yes you are right. The issue was that the on board flash was too bright. May be I can use nd filters to reduce intensity and still be able to trigger slave flash

Delicensing photography

You have a DSLR?

yeah.

But why aren't you carrying it on your holiday?

I am. Its in the bag, in the boot.
I also am carrying a tripod. Its in the boot.

Then don't you want to take this sunset with that?

No man. As in I could, but (depending on my mood at that moment, the answer varies between)
(i) its too well packed,
(ii) its too far away,
(iii) the phone will take a pretty decent snap,
(iv) lets enjoy the moment,
(v) its painful to transfer photos from camera to facebook,
(vi) I want to be inconspicous.

I bought a DSLR in 2008. So its been 5 years since I have had it. I have taken pics with it- my shutter count must be around 20000 - which means around 4000 pics per year, which is a lot to my mind for a hobby photographer. I have bought 3 lens, exchanged one (all cheap lenses, but still they are investments and money spent on photography).

So why do these thoughts come to me now? They have come for the last year or so, and I now take out the DSLR only under protest.

I think there are a couple of reasons -

(i) personality - this is just too conspicuous a device in small/rural localities - it screams out that I have more advantages than the people there. It might not make the subject uncomfortable, but it definitely makes me uncomfortable walking around with it. Its similar to the feeling I get walking around in bright clean Goretex in the middle of broken wool clothed villagers.

(ii) What do I do with those photos? I put some up in a blog, I put them up on FB, where my friends like them. I have printed out big size prints only twice.

(iii) I have mentally decided that I will not bother with very high zooms - I do not want to try and capture things which I can't notice with bare eyes.

(iv) Night shots - long exposure shots - they are great with a DSLR but, as I said above, it is only for a facebook 'like'; whats the point. I don't look at my old night shots and go orgasmic. The re-jig the memory function that a photograph does, is more to do with people in a photograph, or incidents around a photograph rather than an artistic night shot.

(v) Video will kill the photograph. The only thing which was stopping video so far was the cumbersome and costly storage. For any media artist, video is the thing to master - it is photographs and more - as in its requires all the skills of composition that photographs require and lighting and everything, and then require 500 more skillsets. So from a hobby, artistic perspective, this has stopped being that beautiful skill to master (of course, no one can say it in that way, but indulge my thinking, I say from a challenge perspective).

(vi) DSLRs are just too bulky - there is no excuse - they are more trouble than they are worth. Every thing you photograph is already on the net, or if it isn't, my photograph will just add to the meaningless faceless brilliant photographs that are already there.

(vii) phone cameras, point and shoots (at least the top end 15k ones) have reached a stage where they are more than sufficient quality for memory shots, and to indulge in some composition games.

(viii) an f/2 shot, with strange depth of field, is not the way I see any scene in my eye. what is the point then of doing it with a camera.

I am still not certain that its time to discard the DSLR but the way I think about cameras is changing.

Are any of you going through this?

Ouch! Seems once a day I read about how the D90 is gasping in its death bed

And me here waiting in vain for the D400, while trying to figure out how on earth to save money for such an upgrade.

Btw, some Afghans still use 100-150 year old Jezail rifles to shoot enemies from a long distance. Just saying.

No need to feel bad about the sunset days of the D90.

I still use a film camera (a beautiful and immaculately preserved Nikon F100) once in a while. As a DSLR, the D90 is leagues ahead in sophistication and technology. In the end cameras are tools and while we all make the most of what tool(s) we have. I'd love to get my hands on some Fuji Velvia (oh those gorgeous colours!!) As for that D400, I am not really sure about Nikon's intentions to produce a pro grade DX DSLR anymore. That's why the D600.

Kodak print film doesn't float my boat and the last roll of Kodachrome film was used by Steve McCurry (I've added a link to one of my posts a few pages back) Film is dying or already dead with only Fuji producing 35mm film in limited quantities I guess. Shooting slide film is like listening to music using a an audiophile quality turntable and LP. Not as hi tech as CD but the sound is music to your ears.

But for someone coming aboard the DSLR boat it is better for him to consider newer models instead of older ones. That investment lasts a little longer.

Re: Delicensing photography

@Manolin, I think many of the points are what quite a few of us go through. The big one I feel about is the bulk, and are very conspicuous.

Actually, I have taken far more pics with my mobile (a C905) than with my DSLR.

I dont see much benefit in trading it in. Basically, if I dont want my 6MP DSLR, why would anyone else want it ? So am keeping an open eye for a good lens. I may go in for an EVIL too, but nothing decided yet. And I'm trying to put the DSLR to some use, when I can.

Many people start with cameras and some of them switch to dslrs.
Its Like how we see more RE TBTS on roads now a days, same way more people are buying dslrs. Very few end up riding to himalayas isn't it?

Like condor mentioned EVIL Cameras are better suited for people like you. There are few people who have made a switch already from dslr to these and are happy
I believe its all in the sensors. As of today dslrs have biggest sensors followed by evil and point and shoots. Mobiles are only mobiles.
But watch this space. Things can change as technology advances. We no longer buy film cameras isn't it?

For now Mobiles are only good for memory pics which you can load on Facebook and get likes. Cameras can help you post pics in flikr or 500px and perhaps also win some specialized contests.

Re: Delicensing photography

@manolin, perhaps its time for you to consider the Lytro - a camera that records the entire light field - essentially capture the moment as seen. You could pretty much do anything with that picture later - bring any part in focus, apply filters, view it from a different perspective et al. Check out https://www.lytro.com/camera .

No need for another thread to discuss dSLR. I have discarded dSLR. I sold my E3 and 3 fantastic lenses, and went EVIL. I have decreased bulk, and have a camera I can easily carry all the time.

No, I don't think so. The composition skill needed for video is very different than photography. While photo composition happens while clicking, most of the video composition happens by cutting and pasting on the computer. They are very different media, have very different purpose and will co-exist.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Hi,

I am looking for Canon 40mm 2.8 STM pancake lens. It's out of stock on both flipkart and jjmehta. One more site I saw had it in stock but the price was Rs. 12,000. Amazon has it for USD 150 or INR 8,000.

Can anyone help me find this lens in Delhi?
