Microsoft Surface - The iPad Competitor. Now Launched!

Microsoft has launched a new surface computer, which could very well usher a new era of touch based user-interfaces (maybe a car dash too). Almost 6 years in the making the product has been launched with a price tag of $10,000.
Imagine ur car user controls on a virtual surface environment

However,
If half of what he (Bill) promises actually works, I'll be extremely impressed.

Microsoft Surface - The iPad Competitor

The tablet war is getting hot with Microsoft unveiling the Surface tablet.

Microsoft unveils 'Surface' tablet with Windows RT, Windows 8 Pro: NDTV Gadgets

It features the latest Windows 8 OS and looks like it come with a stand and a keyboard. Critics say that it is a complete replacement for a laptop and a netbook. Would be interesting to see how it does once it is released.

The issue is price. Can they price it close to iPad? I don't think its possible for Microsoft price the base version less than $900. High end might be close to $1500. Another issue is battery, which is unknown entity.

The release is still long way off. By that time, the iPad would have captured more of the tablet market. Its a good effort by Microsoft though. The USB ports in this tablet should make it interesting. Other tech. specs are still unknown and so hard to comment. The smart cover with the keyboard feature is innovative.

Yet another iPad competitor for sure.

Microsoft has mentioned that the pricing will start from $499 - $899 which is right in the iPad territory.

However they need to work on the Marketplace which lags behind the iStore.

But the looks are killer, with the Magnetic Cover integrating the keypad, it's definately some new technology being put to use. Let's see how it attracts the masses when it is released.

Beingf a Microsoft fan, I could just be buyer no.1

Looks cool with the integrated keyboard. I guess it started with Asus Transformer which is kind of 3 in 1 device. But this one from Microsoft looks awesome. The promo video is sort of a style statement and looks cool.

The previous Surface is now renamed to PixelSense. Its no longer a Surface.

The Original Microsoft Surface Table Is Now Called 'PixelSense' - Business Insider

I guess its the influence of original Surface that prompted them to keep the same name for tablets. IMHO, they should have selected a better name.

It now costs $8400. Wish it come down to $5000 or below. It would make a great buy then.

Mere gringoire!
The tablet war is really getting intense with more and more manufacturers jumping to get a slice of pie which apple and samsung have been enjoyed since some time.

It is good to see that a new tablet on an entirely new platform would be a good competitor to Ipad and Galaxy Tab. Afterall, we would get the productivity, power and capabilities of a PC at the price of a tablet! Now, That's something!

If they want to outsmart and outsell the Ipad, some features missing in the Ipad should be there such as USB compatibility, Flash player compatibility and if poosible, Then CD slot too! I guess these things would differentiate these two products!

Sandy, yes the Surface has the USB slot in it. Not sure if it's in the Windows 8 RT model, but for sure in the Windows 8 Professional Release, they have put the USB functionality along with an Intel Processor.

The Windows 8 RT has an ARM processor.

This looks/feels just like a 13" laptop with a touch-screen. It seems to be bulkier than a mac book air. Maybe I missed something.

If the tablet can synchronize outlook and other office programs properly i think it should be a huge hit. The only thing i hate about androids and ipad/phones, are the lack of synchronization with Microsoft software ie. if i sent an email through my tablet it would be real cool if it shows up in my sent folder on my desktop and my laptop.

I am able to synchronize my outlook mails and calender with my One X. If I send a mail from my android, it shows up in my outlook sent items and calender items on my laptop outlook are synced with my android and chime a reminder.

I've been waiting for a 'good' windows tablet for a while now with all hopes set for the end of the year. Incidentally, coincides with my birthday also so I'm hoping I would get one of these.
