I have a lot of content in HD format (mkv files) on my PC. Is is possible for me to play them in a normal DVD player to watch them on my 37" LCD TV? (It didnt when I tried..) Or does a dvd player with USB port helps me to play it through a pen drive?
PS. I am not looking for a file convertion option. I know that can be done. |
Well, after some googling I find that the only option for me will be to play them off my PC/laptop and connect LCD TV to it directly. Will have to route audio to the music system separately though.

There has been many naked eye studies on 720p vs. 1080p. This include panels from 40" to 50", and upscaling devices from a cheap DVD player like Oppo to dedicated upscalers like DVDO or Optoma. The summary is that regardless of the panel size, beyond 7-8 feet of watching distance, there is NO difference between a 720 signal and 1080 signal on a full HD screen.
And further tests on upscaling showed that displays from a $150 DVD player with an upscaling chip and a $2000 dedicated stream upscaler have NO noticeable difference beyond the viewing distance of 7'. Of course, the sources are sub-HD. (I mean, we are talking about upscaling).
FWIW, Toshiba SD series, I think 350 or 360, which Next stocks has the best black processing among all players under $250. It costs about 8k or so. 360 comes with HDMI i/o as well.
Reviving this thread . I am on a lookout for a new dvd player which should have USB+ Divx Playback+ HDMI . As far as viewing normal dvd's are concerned components/HDMI make no difference. But they do matter when watching divx movies with high motion scenes / low light scenes. tha crispness is noticeable particularly in 40" LCD and above. I am unable to decide between the LG 388, Samsung 1080-pk and the Phillips 5996 . I am more inclined towards LG dv 388 as I found the picture quality to be quite good but I am unsure about LG Dvd players reliability overall. Does anybody in this forum own a LG DVd player more particularly the DN 192H for more than a year ? Is it reliable enough to last for say next three years ?
Nikunj bhai, try the Pio 6xx.
DV-600AV-S
Its available for around 11k (MRP).

Philips has a model with USB and HDMI (without cable) retailing for around Rs. 5500/-
I think the model no. is 5868P .
The dealers are recommending Philips over LG / Samsung etc. on the argument that they play pirated CDs better. :)
If you want a player that has excellent build quality then find someone who sells Pioneer. My Pioneer DVD 636 is nearly 9 years old and still works as new.
I have Philips DVP5986 (USB, HDMI, upscaling to 1080p, DivX ultra /Xvid support, 5.1 channel audio, Dolby Digital, DTS) which plays almost anything and dvds of all regions. I dont even use my DVD player to play DVDs! Its just the usb drive that works for me. It plays divx/xvid movies off the USB stick in addition to music files and jpeg pictures. I think 5996 is the newer version which supports USB 2.0. The 5986 player is available in Croma for about 4400.
I have seen an offer for a "new" Pioneer DV-400AV-S (USB/HDMI ports available) for Rs. 5200 on a website. The seller seems to have imported it from U.S.A. Is it worth purchasing it considering the listed price by Sumaria to be Rs. 7200/-. My worry is about the warranty.
This not exactly a DVD query. I am having a DENON cd player connected to a Marantz Amp. My DENON cd player is getting old (16 years..yes, you heard it right, 16 long years). It started giving problems, the service guy says the lens has to be changed and it will cost around 9K. So I am looking for a new CD player( or a DVD player). Should I buy a CD player or a DVD player? I am more into music than Videos. Believe me, I don't have a DVD player. How is the audio quality in a DVD player when playing music CDs?. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I too have this DVD player and plays every thing :) as i have lot of DVD's procured from Korea and Japan. This is Sasta(cheap),Tikaaoo(durable) player with value for money
When I took it some DVD's were not playing. That dealer pressed some numbers from the remote to make it region free and now no probs. But dealer refused to tell the code as he said it is not ethical :Frustrati

You will not need the warranty, these things are built to last.

Referring to your recommendation of Pioneer, does the Players of this brand also play the pirated CDs in India also like the USP of Philips models.
