Probably the same cheapo hardware inside a Philips as in the Onida. If you want brand sobbery then go for the real daddy of the mass market - Pioneer and avoid the likes of Philips, Toshiba , Hitachi etc.
Any idea where I can get Pioneer DVD Players at reasonable price in Mumbai.
Dear all I would be grateful if I could please receive your help in choosing a DVD player for my setup consisting of DVD > Denon 1707 AVR > Jamo 406S speakers. Now I was using a Philips DVD which has gone kaput and is not worth repairing, I am in a very tight budget and want a DVD player mostly for movies and some occasional music. I want your help in deciding between LG DV388 / Onida DFX 5990. Pioneer and all such brands are not available here, but on enquiry Hi-Fi Zone in Delhi has Quoted Rs 35oo for the 310 and Rs 5000 for the 410 DVDs respectively. Please help me take a decision a.s.a.p. (Please note I am using a Normal 29” CRT TV not LCD – finance again.)
Lastly wishing you all avery happy Durga Puja.

Lifewater, I would suggest buy Sony. They are more solidly built than other brands, I feel. Also if you are going to spend 5k, get a player which can upscale the picture to HD levels, if and when you upgrade your TV to an LCD/Plasma (Im assuming its a question of when and not if, considering the other equipment you have). If 5k is too much you can get a Sony player for as little as 3k.
DVD Player : Home Video : Sony India
Another point to be noted is that music quality varies from player to player. I have a philips dvp model from us. I bought another philps model here for my home, i did find difference in bass quality. the one from US is more punchy.
U can buy sony, but can it play local dvds?
Did you try Mitashi?
Hey guys thank you very much for your replies. I am more inclined toward Philips / sony now. Let me find out what is available here at Dibrugarh. Many thanks for your replies
Check this out
In the US, LG offers a blueray DVD player that can stream movies directly from Netflix.
BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player by LG
Technically if we get an ISP who can support the bandwidth then we should be able to avail of this Netflix service from here too.
Stupid Koshun from sorta tech unsavvy person here.
For someone who wishes to see the outputs from thinkpad running movies on 32" LCD tv, and is about to buy a 5.1 (?) economy home theater system, is a DVD player required?
Hi,
I am interested in buying a reasonably priced DVD player.
My requirements are simple
- Will only play legal DVDs.
- Will play VCDs.
- Will *NEVER* play discs burnt by downloading off the net.
- Will *NEVER* play MP3 or music on the Player.
- Region Code hacking should be simple.
What is the most reasonably priced DVD player I can buy which fits the
bill?
Hacking Region code is actually considered unethical and illegal. So any DVDs of other regions you play after that is deemed illegal. No player will guarantee that it will/will not play all/any burnt discs as all discs are burnt in some or other manner. There may be quite a few old players which dont have mp3 support.

Is'nt the above two contradictory requirements? On one hand, it is supposed to play only legal DVD and on the other, it should be region-code hackable which itself is illegal.
Aarghhhh, don't think too much about legalities of making the player to play All-region. Actually even some service centers itself will do it for you. And if breaking the region is important then stay away from Sony, it's very difficult to hack. Easiest are probably Samsung and Philips and the codes are available all over the net.
I've one Samsung player with HDMI output and upscales to 1080i (current model upscales to 1080p). Picture quality is very good and very cheap too(I paid 5k only) but only pain is the remote that comes with it (oh I hate it). You can also look for similar Philips models too.
I just bought this one.
Rs 3,500
DVP-NS608P : DVD Player : Home Video : Sony India
It has Region 5 printed behind it.
I have successfully played discs from Region 3 and 5.
I rent movies from bigflix.
The dealer who sold it to me assured me that it was Region Free.
The picture quality is quite nice and the player looks good.
Think no further! Moser Baer has launched its own DVD players with all the damn features you can think of. The players are very compact and trendy to look at, will meet most of your requirements too.
I bought model named Black Panther by Moser Baer for Rs 2,250/-, One year instant replacement warranty. Immacllate sound and pic quality, trendy remote!
