Which Portable HDD ?

If its not under warranty you can do whatever you want with it.
Replacing HDD will void your warranty.
Another side effect is that your windows XP will crib that you need to reactivate it.
That said you can upgrade HDD on anything, factory sealed or not as long as it takes a standard size HDD, which almost all external HDDs are.
Bring it to the meet, and we will see what kinda casing you have

Yes, I dont think there should be any problem in upgrading your Hdd, because at the end of the day its just an IDE hard drive with a USB controller card attached to it.

PS. your casing can opened too.

Brother got it from the States & yes it's 7200 rpm. From what I know the same is available for 8-8.5k here in Nehru Place!

But you can use it in a unbranded casing.. it will cost merely 300 - 400 rs. extra...

Well, its not that simple.
Using a full fledged disk with casing means needing a power adapter. If you want to have an external HDD wihout power adaptor you will need a 2.5" laptop HDD with casing which can be powered of the USB port itself.
These ones are a little more expensive.
Also keep in mind that while a PATA casing is around 300rs, a SATA casing will set you back by about 900Rs

250 lacie hard drives are really good..
have used only lacie HDD's at the studio for years and will swear by them.
the lacie 250 gb only USB 2.0 drive was designed by F.A prsche and is available here in bombay for around 5,400.
best VFM in my opinion.

I bought a 500GB USB2.0 iomega for $220 and a 300Gb Firewire Seagate for $140 from Fry's a few months ago. The Seagate price was an introductory offer, I think. But good VFM.

I didn't start a new thread because this seems like a HDD discussion. I have a very recent Compaq desktop, and my engineer says it can't take any more HDDs than we have added. It sums up to about 320GB. My other machine, which is older, also has reached full capacity in terms of no. of HDDs that I can add, after a power supply upgrade and trashing an optical drive. I hate external HDDs since it's another thing that will have to be in sight and will add to the already cluttered environment, but I badly need to increase storage capacity, for backups etc. I dont think I have any option other than an external HDD. What could I get? Requirements are simple

1. Maximum GBs
2. Maximum GBs/$ and
3. should work with everything ranging from PCs to notebooks to P3s etc.

If you need it to be portable then the best bang for your buck is to buy a 2.5" laptop HDD then buy a good case for that. A 80GB 2.5" HDD costs Rs.3200 and the case will cost Rs.1200 for a good quality one. This will be cheaper than buying a ready external HDD like Western digital which costs Rs.6K for 80GB and comes with a 1yr warranty.

The advantage of assembling it is you get a 5yr warranty on the HDD.

For the power one you will have to do the same but this time 3.5" HDD with a powered case. This will be work out to be cheaper but you lose the portability.
