Has anyone got in a LCD/Plasma TV from abroad?
How much would the customs charge for a 37inch LCD at mumbai airport? Also, do airlines charge extra to carry items like this?

Total import duty on TVs is around 35% afaik.

what do you guys think of DLP TV? I know this a an LCD thread but when we are discussing televisions in general why not DLP TV...... anyone has any thoughts to share about it??

I have seen this tv (PV 7) its at 62k at better deals, janakpuri B1 market..
viera range rocks..Iam looking for a good 42" display for sheer gaming.
iam concerned about 2 things ghosting (wont be there in plasma) and full HD
res ,(for PS3) .I have so far not seen any plasma full hd model (hunting for PZ 80 & 85) anyone has had an exp, pls share!

We have samsung Bordeaux artz 32" but sadly reponse time is 8ms , therefore lot of ghosting , however dish tv is eye candy on the same.

IMHO duty is same for anything brought in as personal luggage by traveler (carry in or checked in luggage).

So, for LCD TV, you wont pay any duty up to 25k, above that its 37.5%. For a 70 K TV, you will pay duty on 45k (70-25).

That is assuming you are are not bringing anything else.

Rules : CLEARANCE OF INCOMING PASSENGERS

OTOH, other then TV you will have to buy international warranty. I have used Mack in past and it works out great since B&H has a branch office in Pune so claiming warranty is hassle free.

I got an LG 32 inch LCD from Dubai in Aug 2007. I got it as part of my checked in baggage, and till the time it is within your baggage limit, airlines do not charge you.

At Delhi airport, I was obviously stopped by Custom officials since the LCD packaging is way too big to avoid being noticed. According to our antiquated laws, the duty-free allowance is INR 25k.

Now they had to determine the 'current market value' of the LCD and for that, the official fished out an old, dirty book. According to that, the TV was valued at INR 30,000. :) So the duty that I was supposed to pay was INR (30k-25k)*.35 = INR 1,750

I didnt bother with bribing as I thought this was a reasonable amount to be paid.

In Nov 2007, a friend was traveling from Dubai to Mumbai and I got the same set for my dad. This time, she chose to bribe the official (this was at Mumbai airport, mind you). This was because the official was in no mood to go by the rules. She paid INR 2k as bribe and came out faster than I did through the official route at Delhi airport.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: LG was the only brand offering 2 year international warranty. Although I liked the Samsung a shade more than LG, I chose the latter due to international warranty. As regards Sony, less said is better. Their quality of products has really deteriorated over the years.

Because of the international warranty offered by LG, I got professional installation done by LG technician free of cost

Hitachi recently launched a full HD 50" plasma - the P50X01A but I didn't like the hitachi plasmas that much compared to panasonics. The Pioneer kuro range has full HD plasmas but they cost a bomb. Frankly personally I don't care a damn about full HD. I've done a side by side comparison of a 720p and a 1080p plasma from the Pioneer range playing bluray on a 1080p capable samsung bluray player and at a distance of 8ft, I couldn't notice any difference. I'm sure games won't be any different either. The panasonic PV7/PV70 accept 1080p signals and internally rescale them to the panel resolution. So I guess its kind of a non issue.

I care a lot more for color accuracy, image sharpness, contrast, uniform backlighting, panel response time than spatial resolution. LCDs don't hold a candle to plasmas in any of these things. Its one blurry mess, especially when watching standard definition tv signals.

Hi. I'm planning to buy this Plasma in 2-3 weeks time PANASONIC TH-42PZ80U 42" 1080P PLASMA HDTV
Its costing me 1300USD and sounds like a steal at that price. I'll update you on its performance once its here with me.

Get this instead... just a bit more but higher native contrast ratio. Its the same panel as the higher end ones, just misses a few frills.

Amazon.com: Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ85U 42-inch 1080p Plasma HDTV: Electronics

Ok, suggestion noted. Its just 100USD more but is it really going to affect the optical perception. I mean 30000:1 V/s 20000:1 Native contrast ratio.

edit: umm ok, darn shipping alone takes 7-10 days through FRY's. But again, its a steal at 1400..

Since its just a 100 more, I guess it makes sense to get the better one. Whether it does or not, I'm not sure cos I've seen neither panels.

I guess i need to figure out how to get it from US , cause at that price its unmatched simply!!.. PZ85 it will be guys. Someone pls explain how to get it from US with modalities involved i.e customs n stuff!!

If you are landing at Mumbai airport, go to "red" channel. Talk to customs officer, just hint and they will settle for 1k - 2k.

Actual Duty would be 37.5% of (cost of TV - 25k).

And DO buy international warranty as it costs just 80$, but gives you peace of mind.

OT : Brought my camera last month (it was at Mumbai Airport). I insisted on paying actual duty by filling challan at SBI counter. Customs guy was fairly disappointed at loss of 1k bribe.

ConsumerReports rate Panasonic pretty high in their rankings.

According to their latest report,

Best large screen plasma: Panasonic TH-58PZ750U
2nd Best 50' plasma: Panasonic TH-50PZ700U (Pioneer PRO-110FD is 1st)
3rd
Best 50' plasma: Panasonic TH-50PZ77U (TH-50PZ750U in 5th spot)
Best Buy 50' plasma: Panasonic TH-50PX75U
Best 42' plasma: Panasonic TH-42PZ77U
Best Buy 42' plasma
: Panasonic TH-42PX77U

is it worth getting an LCD TV from Dubai? How much would the price difference be?
