I had a fan issue with my old Dell Inspiron laptop and contacted Dell for out of warranty repairs. They quoted 8K for it and I told them that's crazy. The Tech Support person said the entire heatsink assembly would need to be replaced not just the fan. The deal killer was I'd have to pay extra for an engg to visit and repair the PC + the old part would be retained by them. What the heck man! I told them politely what I thought of their offer and proceeded to buy a part from eBay. One was available in Latvia for Rs 2K, the part was received in about 12 days. In the meantime I took the laptop apart and cleaned up the fan assembly (did not remove the heatsink as it is a combo that cools the graphic chips too but uses thermal tape that I need to buy separately). The fan seemed to work far better now and still does duty in my 8 year old Core i7 laptop. The part from Latvia is a spare, and I also proceeded to order 2 extra fans from China via eBay.

Long time user of AS5
Me too Since 2003 to be precise. I bought a couple of products from Amazon India; Thermal Take's Arctic 4 and a fresh tube of AS5 along with some AS thermal paste cleaning fluid. I hope to build a new PC for myself in the next 4-6 months. Corsair's H100i coolers that are fitted in my current PCs come with pre-applied Dow thermal paste which does a fine job. May need to upgrade the cooler in case it's not compatible with the X299 mobo socket though I have read it is.

Re: Which Laptop brand provides the best after-sales service & reliability in India?

Shame about this laptop's lack of reliability because when it works, it works so well. Dell changed the motherboard (3rd time), RAM & keyboard last week. So far, so good, but not too optimistic about its long-term potential. I will keep this as the backup computer when my Macbook 16 arrives. But man, when it works - slim, premium, fast, user-friendly. If only it performed as it was supposed to, I'd not even have considered the Mac & wasted so many hours of my time:

I was wondering whether you would consider installing and using Windows OS on your Macbook Pro instead of MacOS. Is it even possible ? Or would it be considered as a sin? Maybe someone who is using Macbook with windows OS can comment on this.

Windows works like a charm. One can subscribe or buy Parallels. I have been a Mac user + Windows via Parallel for over a decade now. It's required if you have some applications which are not available for Mac or are not supported by your organisation.

I would only install windows if an application/software is only available on winodws and is something that I cannot do without. I have installed windows on my Mac using boot camp to dual boot but it kills Mac's USP - the trackpad. By far the best trackpad in the industry becomes absolutely dumb in windows.

Well, I can tell you to try Parallels once and come back here and update. There’s zero change to Mac or Windows applications that I use. There’s even a coherence mode. And this is from my own experience on at least 4 different Mac in past. They usually charge for upgrades or nowadays offer yearly plans and you always get the newer edition. Expensive but works well.

I havent used parallels but since it will run as a virtual machine within Mac OS, i assume Mac gestures would work. I was more speaking from the experience of installing Windows as a second dual boot OS where you actually boot into windows.

I had earlier, but BHPians convinced me otherwise. So now, I'm diving deep into MacOS (and hopefully never looking back).

I *might* use Parallels for a single accounting software that I use. But I Googled and there might be a way to run the software on MacOS. If not, I'll just get Parallels. Thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Which Laptop brand provides the best after-sales service & reliability in India?

My Macbook 16 with 32 gigs of RAM & 1 TB SSD is here! Just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you for all the advice. If it weren't for you guys, I'd have never bought a Mac. When I created this thread, I genuinely thought I'll end up buying a Lenovo or HP.

Looking forward to entering the world of Mac

Congrats on the acquisition. Would recommend not putting any camera covers and stuff in case you were thinking of doing that due to privacy issues as it interferes with the closing of the screen and there are chances the screen might break or the logo bezel cracks. Mine cracked thats why warning you.

Apply a screen protection film not tempered glass as it again poses the same risk at the same time the screen protection film ensures that the screen remains fingerprint and smudge free as it is a fingerprint and smudge magnet.

Also invest in a keyboard cover to prevent dust as it is difficult to clean and do not use any screen cleaners like Colin etc. the rubber around the screen melts because of that I think.

To clean the dust in the space between the lid and screen use a paint or make-up brush and not cloth.

Hope it lasts you a lifetime.

You mentioned that you use Chrome a lot. Just one advise, give Safari a shot. Works like a charm, and the new version also alerts you how many web pages it has stopped form tracking what you are doing

Thanks! Just initial impressions as I've only played with it for a cumulative 10 - 12 hours.

- Love the design & aesthetics of the MacOS.

- Build is very good. Feels top-quality. My brother told me this is the "S-Class" of laptops and I agree.

- Hate the keyboard. I like keys with travel - the Macbook hardly has any travel.

- Love the huge trackpad. Am already using Mac gestures which I found quite user-friendly.

- Love the big screen (almost like a desktop), but don't like the heavy weight. It's a heavy laptop. If I get hooked onto the Mac ecosystem, then I'll buy another 13" Macbook for field use, once their ARMs come out. I anyway need two identically setup laptops at all times.

- The transition has started off pleasantly. Am not finding it difficult to use the new OS at all. In fact, I have already installed some of my programs, typed a couple of Team-BHP posts and used it for emails. Am also setting it up the way I like it. There are some really cool options (e.g. photo wall of family pictures as a screensaver).

- Battery life sucks. Am getting just 5.xx hours. My current Dell goes to 8 hours easily.

- Appreciate the fact that its silent & doesn't get hot. I can use it on my lap without issue. My Dell Latitude is like a hot oven in comparison.

- Speed wise, it's a BEAST. Damn fast & responsive.

- Siri has been a surprise! I'm not one to ever use voice commands, but am deploying Siri for some things (e.g. enabling night shift).

The old Macbook keyboard was so good to use. Now that they need the laptop thinner, they came up with this keyboard which sucks. Needs getting used to.

I thought MacBook's were always in the front for battery backup. May be because yours is a 16". You might get better backup in the 13"

Also - you didnt mention anything w.r.t the display quality.

Oh my god! It is FABULOUS. The screen shows better colours and is more crisp than the Sony TV in my hall!

Also the speakers - easily the best laptop speakers I have ever heard.
