Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

Hello Bhpians,
Many of us have read posts on "Power Banks Purchase" Queries in the Android Phones Thread, Mobile Phones Thread, etc.

But when I surfed through the Respective Manufacturers website, I was confused between which Model to buy as many of Models have same capacity even in their own stable but vary in design (or is there much more than just the design difference?).

I have mentioned some of the Power Banks that have more than or equal to 10000mah Capacity as below- (I have not checked their availability. But the price of some 10000mah are more than their 20000 mah siblings.)
Other than design variation, what are other factors that are different internally?

re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

Guessing all of them come with a led lamp to double up as a torch and auto cutoff.

Other factors are :
- quick charge : whether it has this tech or not and if yes which version
- USB-C/PD ports : apart from the usual USB-A ports there could be dedicated USB-C/PD ports too. They support really fast charging if your device does too. Philips DLP1720QV which you mentioned has that.
- time to charge the power bank itself : especially if you buy the 20000mAh ones. It takes time. Not sure if the USB/PD charging works both ways.

I have an Anker PowerCore 20100 with PoweriQ 2(no USB-C/PD), its excellent, charges the phone fast but expensive. This one.
PoweriQ is essentially an adaptable charging proprietary of Anker(I guess), it charges faster if your phone supports it. Not sure how it does it but it works
Want to know more on PoweriQ checkthis out.

Note :
I have used one of the cheaper ones too(around the Rs.700 mark in 2014), and although it claimed 10000mAh it barely provided 7000-8000, was slow to charge itself and it deteriorated rapidly. So decided on the Anker as I just wanted a reliable one on my trips.

Hope it helps.

I did not find any difference between brands so picked up Philips for its rich leather looks (Feels posh) and LCD display. But my new phone requires USB C, so looking out to buy anew

Instead of changing the Bank why don't you buy this - AmazonBasics USB Type-C to USB-A 2.0

The rating may be same. But below factors differentiates between brands

1. Charge retention time
2. Charging time
3. Durability: how many days, it will run without deteoration in charge retention time. Over time, charge retention time tends to decrease

If it is for iPhone 12 then this will do the duty for you.

https://www.amazon.in/Wayona-Nylon-B...NsaWNrPXRydWU=

It is rated 5A.

I am using such a cable to charge my Mate 20 X with Fast charging 22.5W.

Cheers!

re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

I think many designs from the same model means they are different 'generations'. New generations generally don't mean anything when it comes to such products, but new colours and body styles are introduced to appeals to customers.

The only three factors I'd say which can differentiate power banks:
1. Rate of charging the PB
2. Output amperage for fast charging
3. Life of battery over time

Re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

I had an Aukey 30000 mAH battery pack picked up in the US about 3 years ago for about 30-40 USD and it has been working well since then. It charges my phones at least times from about 15% to full charge before it needs to be recharged.

Re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

The main difference is in the quality of the batteries used. Some brands use Samsung/energizer batteries and they usually mention it as an USP. Companies that do not mention the battery make use the generic Chinese cells. These may be good but there is the remote possibility of an accident.

Re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

I did a lot of study before I bought my powerbank. My exact requirements were:
1. It should have USB C type - This ensures future proofing as all phones are coming with C-type cables & ports.
2. It should support 18W PD (Power Delivery) charging - This will ensure that most iPhones and common android phones will do a fast charge when charging from the powerbank. I can even run my Surface Pro laptop of it .
3. Powerbank itself must support PD charging - This will ensure that you can use your common PD charger to fast charge your phone and powerbank. The powerbank will also charge-up quickly when empty.
4. It must support Low Power Mode - This is required to charge Bluetooth headphones, fitness bands etc.
5. Must be available in bright red/yellow - Stupid me tends to leave them in aeroplane seats very often. Hence a bright colour.

The only ones locally made which support all of the above 5 are:
a. Realme Powerbanks (available in 10000 & 20000mAh)
b. Mi Powerbanks

Both are around the same price and you can choose your preference.

Re: Any difference between Power Banks, even if their rated capacity is the same?

Please note that you can only carry up to a 100 Wh power bank on an aircraft (works out to about 20000 mAh at 5V). You have some margin on this and normally up to 27000 mAh should be fine. I did not know this and ended up losing an excellent giant laptop charger power bank to a German security check a couple of years ago.

The power bank I use is Ravpower 26800 mAh Super-C series. It has a USB-C port that can be used to charge the bank itself or any electronics like an iPhone or a laptop. Unfortunately, it is not available in India. When (if?) the pandemic situation eases and if you get an opportunity, you may want to check it out.

Couple of things I feel are important factors to help us decide:

1. Design and dimensions
As you mentioned, design and size is a good point to start, doesn’t hurt for it to look good and, for me if I’m going for a short trip or stepping out of home and may need a small charge to keep phone battery from crashing then, it should ideally not be bigger than a pack of cards so, it easily fits in our jeans’ or shorts’ pocket.

2. Weight
Shouldn’t be too heavy if we intend to carry it in our pockets’ or in a bag we intend to lug around all day.

3. Charging output and recharging input
Does powerbank charge the phone and earbuds case as fast as they would get charged via a wall plug?
What is the maximum output that each of the available ports provide?
What charging rate does each port reduce to, once there is more than one port being used at the same time?
How long does it take to recharge the powerbank?
Does the powerbank support ‘pass through’ that is, can the powerbank charge the phone at the same time that the powerbank is being charged?

4. Features
Inbuilt charging cables, number of output ports, inbuilt torch, (not too bright) charge LED light indicators, auto switch off after sometime if it’s not being used, auto shut off once phone is charged fully, etc.

5. Price
Price in relation to powerbank capacity and added features.

6. Known brand and warranty
Good to go with a known brand if available.
Good to get 1-2 years warranty if available, shows that the manufacturer has trust in their product and backs it.

I was thinking to buy one, but could not decide between the "Variants" of any particular brand.
How do you guys decide which Variant is perfect for your needs?

Will need to know your specific requirements.
But I will recommend 20000mAh based on the following points :
  • Physical size won't matter that much since its not being carried in the pocket(not recommended too, always in a bag). So then why limit yourself with 10000.
  • Since batteries degrade over time and after 2 years of usage even if it holds 12000mAh it will still charge a regular phone at least 3 times
  • Not recommending any "premium" brands like Anker as they cost almost twice and if this is good enough why spend more.

If today I have to buy something (not Anker) with my requirements of :
- 20000mAh
- fast charging : 15W/18W
- not very bulky(they are bulky in general though)
- intelligent cutoff protections
- intelligent charging : different charge speeds for different devices
- USB-PD : Any new device will have that feature so the PB should be able to charge that as well(e.g. laptops). Check more on USB-PD here (Credits to Providers) : Android Authority : USB Power Delivery
- at least 1 year warranty

I would buy this : Philips 20000mAh QC
Its a new product from Philips, meets requirements and has good reviews.
If you are okay with my points you can buy the same.

Hope it helps.
