Re: Why you must invest in a smartwatch if you want to be fit! A six month update on using my Apple Watch. It is a lovely tool to record workouts but it is only somewhat useful vs the Whoop.
Why? Because it does not synthesize all those measurements into a net score guiding you on how far you can push yourself. At 41, in a traveling job and barely hitting my seven hour sleep targets, knowing how far to push is my primary concern.
I have gotten two other friends onto whoop all of whom are happy with its insights. For those seeking to maximize their aerobic training with gadgets, I can now confirm that :
Whoop ($200/year) >> Apple Watch even using pro versions of athletic recovery apps like Athlytic or Train Today
TLDR? Whoop sets accurate targets on how much aerobic load your body can tolerate and updates the limits during the day - so you minimize over-exertion. Even the best Apple Watch apps currently do okay on recovery measurement via sleep but do not do a great enough job of updating your exertion targets during the day.
Training Today is on the right path but it can get confusing.
This is my learning from n=4 days. Will update further during the month.
For me in my 40s, my capacity varies directly depending on how well I slept - Whoop tells me how much I have in the tank, and how far I can push myself on any one effort (DTE)!
