Team-BHP - Which UPS to buy ?

Microtec the best?!?!?! :Shockked: No way! I don't know about Sys admins... maybe they are talking about bigger units or something; but every individual user I'v spoken to had nothing remotely nice to say about it.

Su-Kam I dunno. We have a Su-Kam inverter which is good... but dunno anything about their UPS. Don't know anyone who has one either. I don't think they can match APC though.

don't want to create any flame war.but APC failed for me.with constant current fluctuations due to transformer sharing with a near by matchbox factory ,APC too Failed-not only once,but many times(in extreme conditions).I cannot verify whether it was due to some mosfet failure etc with UPS.but that is what I experienced for few years.That is why my question dear Raccoon.So is the question about CVT.

Su-kam sells 'pure' sine-wave ups, which is wayyyyyy better than square wave ups from APC.

Also just walk to your nearest computer shop who stocks multiple brands ask for complaint/exchange rate of microtek vs the rest and trust me you will be surprised. Microtek provides the longest backup.

I just found out that if you have a PSU with Active PFC, you need a pure sine wave UPS.

I know APC doesnt have any in the Back-UPS range. Any idea if Microtek/Su-Kam have a Pure wave UPS in the entry level. Budget is 4- K

And, the SuKam dealer i went to told me that all their UPSes come without a battery and it has to be purchased separately. Is this true ?

APC UPS Sucks big time, I Am currently using a 650VA Back UPS ES and it's the 2nd one that I am getting(under warranty ofcourse) after the one I bought failed and currently this one dosen't provide more than 2 minutes of back up.But the Service is quite good,but once I am through with the warranty period i am getting myself a Microtek or Su-Kam for sure.

Now i am gonna call up the APC Guys and request for another replacement UPS :D

@muneermk, where did you source the APC UPS/

And a question - I have a 600 VA UPS, giving approx 8 minutes of backup. If I want around 30 minutes backup (17inch monitor, AMD65 processor with 2 hdds, etc), what should be the specification of the UPS? 1KVA?

I've personally found UPS pretty reliable. My earlier V guard UPS would make my system turn off when the power went off, and then start up again !

havent had much problems with the APC i eventually bought to replace it. And it has suffered a lot more abuse , and its still going strong. Now I've got two, and havent had any issues with either of them.

I think they have an excellent product. At least it works beautifully for me

from my v guard travail days, I was told that if the UPS support folk were to replace the battery, it would have a warranty of only 6 months, on the other hand , If i bought it from outside and gave it to them, I'd have a warranty of 2 months.

Funny thing though, the UPS still died after We spent about 2k for the battery + repairs. And this time , the V guard folks said the problem was with the new battery, while the battery folks said it was with the UPS, and we figured it best to cut our losses then and buy an APC :p

APC, I bought one of their invertors (then sold by Videocon) about 15 years ago. It worked fine for and powered lights, fans, TV a small fridge and my computer for a decade until my power needs exceeded its capacity.

I am presently using a APC Back-UPS RS 1500 and it is perfect. A neat package that sits anywhere. It controls surges and spikes and gives seamless power out of 4 sockets. There is another socket without battery backup which is surge protected.
