you can't compare LGs & Samsung with Voltas..Its better to get voltas than the koreans..& great price too..dunno what you mean by " voltas prices normally lower by that much"..could be the price difference between Kolkata & Delhi?

If you want the best you have to go for the O General model or the Blue star with the scroll compressor. Expensive yes but will give you peace of mind.
The idea is to get a compressor that is not made in China which is difficult to come by and if at all made there it should be Mitsubishi or Hitachi make. If short term economy is to be considered then the other options are Voltas and Onida which can be considered but since Voltas group also made my :FrustratiJunkindica I am vary of recommending a Voltas unit.

I am wondering how much of Daikin's reputation is simply because of price and Japanese badge? It is human nature to equate higher price with higher quality. I have seen their India specific website, and I see nothing in their specifications that make their products superior to competetion. Nothing sensational about the compressor either in split units, as far as I could gather.

Not slagging the product, since I haven't tried it, but I also do not know of anyone with Daikin in their residence. Talking to commercial vendors, all I hear is: "Daikin is the most expensive AC sir. It is the best."

Most of these people haven't actually used or evaluated the product!

If anyone has tried Daikin, can you please tell how effective it is at temperatures as high as 46c-48c, and almost round the clock usage.

I do know that LG is not that good, particularly after the first couple of years their efficiency just seems to drop, although they do come feature loaded.

Finally installed Voltas Vertis plus window ac on thrusday for 18k but my information regarding these ac equipped with national/hitachi compressor was wrong.
It is some Gree compressor made by Melanda refri. company:confused:.Anyway its quite effective though my room is quite small.

For those who have frequent voltage fluctuations is their areas,they should get the stabalizer custom made with copper wiring which can go as low as 150v for 3.5- 4k upwards.

Has anybody checked out Toshiba Split A/C's. Their .75 ton and even 1 ton have most impressive power consumption stats I have ever seen on an AC.

.75 ton is around 670W/hr and
1 ton is around 900W/hr.

I recently put a .8 ton Voltas Vertis in my room basically to save on power since power bills came in at 3000 bux/month. It didn't match upto expectations on the cooling front, since the room never got chilled like in the case of an 1.5 ton AC, but it performed above expectations when it came to dehumidifying the room.

I always saw a river of water in the morning below the AC everyday so I kept a bucket below it one day to catch that water. And to my surprise the next day a 18 ltr bucket was 3/4th full of water just due to run off from the AC.

I had never experienced this with the 1.5 ton, it just seemed like the 1.5 ton Carrier just gobbled up all the water itself. lol

Huh?
W/hour is no such thing.
Watt is the rate of energy consumption.
So I am guessing that the 1 ton consumes 900W
My 1.5 ton AC consumes 1350W, while hitachi ones are supposedly 1250W
An ac consuming 1300W means it will consume 1300Wh in one hour
i.e 1.3KWh in 1 hour or 1.3 units in one hour.
Cost of 1 unit = Rs4
So its like 5.2rs/hour cost.

.75 ton Toshiba AC = .60 - .65 KW
1 ton Toshiba AC = .80 - .85 KW

Comparable Hitachi Window AC models have power consumption of

1 ton Hitachi Window AC = 1300 Watts
1.5 ton Hitachi Window AC = 1800 Watts
2 ton Hitachi Window AC = 2400 Watts

Whereas Hitachi Atom Split AC has power consumption of:

1 ton Hitachi Atom Split AC = 1280 Watts
1.5 ton Hitachi Atom Split AC = 1800 Watts
2 ton Hitachi Atom Split AC = 2400 Watts

KW sounds more real.
If they really consume that much as compared to Hitachi, then its great.
I think my figures are off quite a bit.
As for the toshiba figures, if they actually are such low power, thats going to be the next AC!

OGeneral has given roundabout method for calculating consumption: They have used a BTU/Watts chart.

.75 Window AC = 10.11 BTU/Watts
1.14 Window AC = 10.37 BTU/Watts
1.5 Window AC = 10.58 BTU/Watts

BTU is for British Thermal Units. [A BTU is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit] Not very relevant to the units used by us. One 'ton' translates to 12000BTU/hr.

I think the above measure is for calculating EER (Energy Efficieny Ratio). It looks quite good as it is above the minimum of 8.0 stipulated by most orgs.

I have had similar experiences with LG ACs both at home and business installations. It just seems to me that their product is not designed to operate in the Indian heat+plus continous long term usage.
They also lose their cooling effectiveness dramatically after certain amount of time/usage. Having burnt my fingers, I now consider them junk.

In all likelihood, my next AC will be a Toshiba Daiseikai Hi-wall. But I am not sure when I'll buy it, since I am not 'settled' these days. Oh well.
