TATA Wimax question

I am going to install TATA Wimax connection at my place, since TATA has stopped landline broadband from now on.

Would like to know, that since it uses PPPOE , will i be able to use it both on my laptop and desktop (one at a time, not shared).
How is the reliability factor of Wimax vis a vis normal DSL/cable internet.

WiMax as a technology is not happening. Google or check engadget. there'd enough news of junta in US pulling it back.

Reliance WiMax gave enough junta headaches.

And Tata has a horrible customer service network, so take it in writing from me that unless perfect, you have a tough task on your hands

I had a tata net connection (USB) and am still regretting getting it.
It was absolutely useless ,no speed ,no connection most of the times plus they confirmed my address many times but still i didn't used to get ANY copy of the bills.
Gave up after a month of torture.

Requested the the concerned people to deactivate my account but that never happened and i kept getting bills every month plus the irritating phone calls........sir your outstanding/unpaid bill blah blah blah.
They used to fix up meetings with there executives every week but no one came.
Finally i went to the the nearest tata outlet and screwed there happiness.

They promised me that if i pay a certain amount they will make sure that my account/number gets deactivated and i dont get any more calls which i did.
Guess what ,got a call from them saying sir if you pay XXX amount you can retain your number/account.

Hope you get the picture.

DCE bhai,

Read the similar threads #1 from Lohith. That was my source many moons ago.

And I know junta who have used Tata broadband with wires and it was down every second day, and the CC was the problem! Mine was okay, so I didnt get any issues. But despite me paying my bills/closing the connection, they kept emailing me the last month bill for another 3 months CC process goes nowhere. And if WiMax is the way Lohith says, you will just break your head. search forum yaar.

If you want to save yourself from pain of calling the non-tech tata technicians for technical problems every other day, then please do not ever think about Tata for internet connectivity.

Take any other connection, but not a TataIndicom Wimax connection!

The upload rate I got was worse than a dialup. That is for a connection which was costing some 4,300/- a month. Luckily, my advance cheque for 16,000 had not cleared, and I put a stop payment on it. After that, it was pretty easy to get rid of.

If you want headaches, 12hrs downtime, pathetic tech service kindly pick up tata indicom internet connection. I had their connection for 7 months as no one else would give service near my old residence. I think airtel is by far the best in every which way.

Oh dear!
Now i have to seriously consider otherwise.
The problem is, there is a local internet provider in locality (touchnet), then there is Reliance broadband, which is overpriced for the speeds they offer, and now TATA Wimax. Airtel has no slots :(

Seems like i will have to give second thoughts, and continue with local touchnet.

I have a Tata wired broadband at home. I can surely say that the customer service is pretty bad. Once our connection was down due to a wire cut and it wasn't repaired for a week! and they say the customer service engineer had to be replaced so it took time!

IMO avoid TATA services. We had TATA broadband at our place. One day I receive a call about our payment cheque that has bounced. There was no notice since four months from bank. Eventually after a physical brawl and I was almost going to consumer court, they accepted its their mistake. They had encashed the cheque but did not make entry. Dont want to give full details as now you have known the intensity of problems TATA can create.

I am now using Reliance Wimax and its running fine for around 10 months now. No issues.

EDIT : More about my bad experience:

Well, I am using one and in my area this is the only ISP available along with BSNL. BSNL was not good, so we are usnig Reliance Wimax since 10 months now without any issues.

To answer this question -- the "dish" plugs in to a modem.

One cable coming out of the modem goes to the dish (PPPoE - from the modem's power supply) and the other goes into your laptop / desktop.

Atleast this is the way it is with the reliance wimax.

I have been using the Tata wimax connection for nearly two-three months now. Initially there were a lot of problems like could not connect to websites. consistently losing connections etc. Called Indicom Customer care and lodged a complaint. Next day onwards they were behind me in solving my problem(Surprising). Any way they could not solve my problem and gave some fixes and did some irrelvant things and finally claimed that speed has increased. Surprising the tool they used to test the speed was showing really good speed.
Did some RnD from my part and changed the ISP DNS servers to Open DNS servers. And No more connection issues now. cool speed, enjoying now. Torrents go upto 25 (My connection is unlimited 256)

I would definitely suggest Changing DNS servers as a solution. Atleast, it solved my problems.

Pro: Decent speed with DNS changed
Con: it really frustrates that you got to enter your user name and password every now and then. really tough for big file downloads

Reason For choosing: BSNL had longer waiting times. Airtel dont have slots and I had faced all possible trouble with reliance in the past so just avoided that.

Thanks,
Nagu
