I always knew there was a big difference between the Thinkpad lines and the Lenovoa lines. The keyboard is the first clue. My T41p has a IBM logo on it. The X61 was also designed by IBM but when Legend Computers took over IBM's PC business the design IP got transferred too.

Plain and simple design and strong chassis is one of the reasons Thinkpad is, what it is.

Other Lenovo laptops are not up to the mark in terms of reliability.

Better to look at other brands if you are buying Non-Thinkpad Lenovo.

OTOH : Talk to youe local Laptop-repair shop. They should be able to fix this for 6 - 10k. It sucks to do for somthing thats in warranty, but don't see any other way out.

No, no. Normal entry level laptops and desktops.

Navin, a clean re-install is in order. Computers pick up a lot of unnecessary software junk with time.

Ditto. My office desktops are entry level pieces (about Rs. 17000 each).

Maybe Good News. Fingers crossed.

I sent a rather strongly worded email to Lenovo (on all the id's I had, now hidden for privacy reasons) not expecting anything substantial to happen.

I have received a reply, just hoping they replace the Laptop and restore my faith in IBM's (or Lenovo, if its the same thing), past few months have been quite an ordeal.

Email and reply is QUOTED below.

Hi Manveet,

Since I did not hear from you despite repeated attempts, you may expect this Blog to be all over the Internet (including Facebook, LinkedIn, Orkut, etc.) apart from a Case in Consumer Court.

Thanks & Regards,
Manveet.

Fix what for 6-10k? See, Lenovo is still replacing my ODD month on month FOC, and I am sure they will replace my RAM and Mic FOC as well - My warranty covers it - I have paid for it.

You seem to be missing the point.

The point is the pain in getting this done over and over again. You log a complain, explain the ENTIRE history to the guy on the line - he is just doing his job helping you troubleshoot, but you get irritated because you KNOW what the problem is. After a 20 minute conversation you get a SO id, then call the Service Centre who never pick up. It's little easier for me by now because I have all their cell nos. and they know me quite well (ironical, though). All this in office hours, which affects productivity to a great extent.

Apart from all this, imagine seeing that blue screen almost on a daily basis not knowing whether a reboot will actually be successful or your Laptop has finally died on you.

Anyways, I will refrain from more negative posts (like the ones I was supposed to send by now) and hope for the best.

Will keep you guys posted.

Tx.

I think you should send a finalistic mail saying that they are obliged to replace your laptop without further ado, and, don't forget to attach all the previous correspondence.

AFAIK, my Laptop is already scheduled to be replaced. I received a call yesterday from some lady in Lenovo asking me how much I purchased my Laptop for.

I've given her the relevant info .. that I paid 55k for the Laptop and about 7k for extended warranty.

Sorry to hear about your experience!

I have used both IBM and Lenovo thinkpads (T43,60,61) and they are the best. Quite reliable, robust, easy to use and lightweight.

When I moved from IBM Thinkpad to Lenovo Thinkpad, I was told of many horror stories of Lenovo and how it has poor quality compared to Lenovo, but have not come across any so far in last 2 years.

This is the Laptop I had earlier (775756Q) ...
Lenovo 3000 Y410 775756Q Laptop PC | Laptop.Views

and this is the one being offered (27813DQ)
Techtree.com India > Notebooks > Lenovo IdeaPad Y430 - 27813DQ

Apart from being much lower priced, it has the T5800 processor as against the T7250 which I had earlier. Although both are 2GHz, the T5800's cache is at 667MHz as against the 800MHz of the T7250.

Which is better?

Edit: the newer laptop is based on the Montevina platform and has DDR3 RAM as against the DDR2 RAM I had earlier.

I have T42 used as roughly as possible for last 4 years, no problems ate all.

Last year I bought Y500 and quality is ok, not good as compare to T Series, still no problems.
