mp3 at 192kbps will give you near CD quality with the difference being measurable only if you have exceptional ears or sophisticated equipment. You can always rip at 320kbps which is CD quality, and things have changed a loooot since past 5 years

here is something for you

"LOOSELESS"
audio compressed with looseless codec will give you cd quality sound only drawback is file size but a large memory player will do the trick

its LOSSLESS i think. And the codec is flac, but most mp3 players support wmv/mp3 and some support ogg. So 320kbps mp3 is the best bet as it is "Cd quality"

ref: Lossless codecs: flac is one, wavpack is another, monkey audio (ape) is a 3rd, even WMP (windows Media Player) has one .......these codecs are what is considered to me MATHEMATICALLY lossless. No one said anything about aural quality.

I use Wavpak and Lame (--alt preset extreme). wavpack gives me 1:2 compression and lame about 1:5. you can use foopod on your ipod to play both (as well as flac etc...). check out hydrogenaudio.org for more.

sorry for the typo

WMV also has Lossless compression
MP3 has Flac
& for Apple also has lossless for their format.

Tsk/Adya,
Thanx for the info ...
But the problem is I have a very high end audio system and it reveals all junk in the recording immd .. And because of that my ear have been tuned to good music spectrum ...
And anyways most MP3's that you can download are at 128k and hence the quality is bad ... If u have the CD for ripping then why go thru the trouble of using a digital player ... might as well use the CD ... No electronic music format beats the audio spectrum of the the CD ,DVD-A and High end LP's ...
Also tried using a Ipod which my bro uses but its the same thing ... Doesnt come anywhere close to that of a CD ...
With Rock and Dance music is doesnt matter but with Classics, Lounge, Chillout ... It does make a difference

at home i can understand using CD but in a car with road noise I am surprised if youd notice esp if you are driving.

besides while CD might sound better Solid State players (Ipod Shuffle etc..) are far more portable. Once the 20GB flash memory is out you could carry about 3000 songs at 256k. Pays to startbuilding your collection now.

you can download good quality Mp3s too from sites like http://www.ubernet.org/ there are also sites to download flac, wavpack, and ape files as well as -alt-present-extreme. ofcourse you need good bandwidth for this.

Infractions: 0/1 (7)

Discman...Panasonic MV 65. Never skipped a beat in its life. MP3, audio, you name it.

Btw, I always download at minimum or 192kbps, or even 320 if I can find it. No quality issues, but maybe I'm not too sensitive.

Most music is copy righted and downloading w/o paying proper royalty is illegal , further such(so called) FREE downloading is an open invitation for viruses and may pose a big threat to your computer's security.

There are many reputed (and safe) sites which offer legal music downloads, BUT one has to PAY for it.

dont have a dedicated DAP yet.
But dont need that too. I got Sony CLIE UX50 PDA which takes care of all my Audio/Video/Gaming needs...

MP3s cannot give absolute CD-Quality Audio in anyway, but DAPs are mostly bought for their portability factor. if u are at home, obviously, u'll listen to ur home audio equipment.
