HEy Revtech,

Sharp 903 is also known as sx833. The naming has got something to do with Vodafone exclusivity.

If you are talking features and quality comparision to nokia, I have not used one enough to comment. My closes tryst with sharp is the gx20 which my friend in UK used for more than 2 years. He has been pretty satisfied with the phone.

Some places that will ship to your place in India are .

www.starlinwireless.com
I bought a phone from them. Had some trouble during the time of sale though.

www.samstores.com- One of my friends had tried to buy a phone with Indian credit card. Had some problem using it and cancelled the transaction.

as far as the review of the phone is concerned, here is some information that can help.

http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Page=1&Id=1696

Thanks to the 3.2MP CCD, picture resolution is very good. Auto white balance appears more accurate than in Sony Ericsson's k750i, and the focusing speed seems comparable. With an all new designed lens system, corner distortion is much improved, sharpness is greatly improved too. To my surprise, the one-step 2x optical zoom takes less than a second to activate. Minimum macro focusing distance is 8cm (3.14"). QR-code barcode output and input is available, as is OCR - but don't expect too much from the accuracy, it's seems to be just a gimmick.

1.) Good Camera phones are still very expensive to buy. The word good is relative too. A 3.2mp phone camera is still not even half as good as a 2mp digicam.
2.) Wifi standards are still upto Wireless B. Pda's have reached wirelesss G standards and PDA phones with wireless G are not far.
3.) Surfing with wireless on a pda is not really convinient.

1.) Lightweight phone under 100gms with 2mp camera
philips 960(meets all your requirement but you wouldnt want a philips
panasonic vs6 (good if u dont mind a panasonic phone in your hand)pics not as good as sonyericsson or sharp though)
sonyericsson D750i/k750i/w800i(uses MemoryStick)
samsung d600 (Uses micro sd)

2) Wifi enables 2mp phones

nokia n91- yet to be launched, more music oriented, small screen not ideal for surfing the net
Sonyericsson p990- keeping in line with previous p-series pda, It may make an excellent phone. may be pricey on introduction to the market. not released
nokia E70- small screen but good keypad/. Yet to be released
xda atom- camera certainly not a strong selling point here. Otherwise and excellent phone and a recommended buy.
qtek/imate jamin- same features as an atom. Not many review out yet. Again camera is not a strong USP as all windows devices.

there are some phones with more than 2mp resolutions

sharp 903(my best non-smartphone choice) excellent 3.2mp camera with optical zoom, flash and red-eye reduction. Additionally a 640x480 video recording.
samsung p860- yet to be released, 5mp camera with tv/out. May be available in South East
xcute dv2-available in grey market. Comes with 6mp camera lens. Build quality not the best. I doubt it is interpolated though.
xcute dv- available in grey market. Comes with 3mp lens. agins same build quality and I fear its interpolated too.

best camera phone choice is sharp 903

1. does the sharp 903 only come in red?
2. why wont i want a philips / panasonic phone. are they that bad?
3. 802.11b is adequate for my needs (webmail).
4. micro SD is ok for me. memory stick is not
5. prefered colours are dark blue, black, white, metaillic grey or silver. No yellow or red.

a) for light weight phone any options other than Philips 960, Panasonic VS6, or Samsung D600 (micro SD, 2 MP+)? Which has best cam of these 3 or 4 phones?. The W800i is probably best but uses Memory stick. Right?

b) for WiFi phone any options other than Nokia E70/N91/N80, Samsung P860, SE P990 or Imate or Atom? WiFi/PDA faclities are mainly for webmail. BTW my Palm address book must be able to port to the PDA phone recommended. How bad is the Atom camera compared to the E70?N80. Too bad the o2 mini does not have a good camera or Wifi.

FYI the light weight phone (under 100gm) will replace a Nokia 7610 and the WiFi phone will replace a Nokia 6230i and Palm T5 combo.

as navin askied....does the sharp 903 onlly come in red.because that phone looks good and i want to pick one up but not really interested in a red phone.
cant wait to get my hands on it...

rev

a thought just crossed my mind.if i get this sharp 903 i will be able to put my orange sim card in right or is it like those tata phones without a sim card.because i read somewhere thats its a sim less phone.

sorry for the stupid question.

Sharp 903 is available in 3 colours.

But if you are a real car buff and interested in a red ferrari edition phone then there is also a cheaper 2mp sharp 902 ferrari edition phone

Navin,

2) Philips 960 is not a bad phone at all. But I gave that statement on the basis that most people buy phones from Nokia. Secondly availability will be an issue and thirdly resale will be a headache.additionally panasonic vs6,vs7 phones lack memory card.( I mentioned it coz it was below 101gms with 2mp camera)

As far as philips 960 is concerned, Its linux OS based, beautiful slider design and lightweight as you want it. No info about the quality of the camera though but you can check that at the shop.No review is out yet but here is some info from Philips India website.

Philips India

more info

some authorized places to look for philips 960 in Mumbai would be

1. North American
44, Damji Shamji Ind. Estate,
LBS Marg, Vikroli - West
Mumbai, Maharashtra,
25773800/25774707

2. Philips Arena - Effarsons
Moti Mahal ,
202, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli
Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400018
24934400/24934441

3. Philips - Mumbai
Technopolis Knowledge Park, Mahakali Caves Rd,
Chakala, Andheri (East),
Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400093
022 - 56912000,

Look at the more advances panasonic VS7 if weight is not an issue with you. The carbon fibre like(Not sure if it is really carbon fibre) cover looks good. panasonic vs6 is a clamshell again with automatic open switch to show-off. again lightweight with all the features you want. Not a smartphone like the philips 960 though. Camera is lauded to be good. I have seen a pic on the phone but not on the computer. Looked pretty neat but phone screens can be deceptive. Panasonic is now switching to 3g phones and so these are the last of non-3g phones from panasonic.

3) If wifi is adequate for your needs then look a a pda phone. Surfing net on a big screen will be more convinient for you if you want to do more than just webmail.

xda2i and imate pda2k are now pretty cheap along with big screen. Older windows OS is a setback for such good phones.

Sonyericsson p990 is expected to be good unless SE has not upgraded that slow 168mhz cpu. but as you said you dont want Memory stick.

nokia n91 is a strict nono from my side. It will be heavy, more music oriented and overtly expensive than what it really costs.

xda atom and imate jamin are good and compact phones too. you can look at these

also look at benq p50 and eten m600 if skype VOIP is a benefit to you.

NOkia E70 will be the best option for you according to me with that qwerty Keypad along with wireless

4) look above for phones with SD cards.
5) I have shown the pics of phones above. Decide which colour for which phone you like

a) These phones are the best in business for a 2mp or above camera phone. W800i Is good but yes it uses a memory stick? Sharp 903 is better though

btw what problem do you have a memory stick? Lemme know so that I can help you better.

look at a samsung d600. It uses a micro SD

samsung d600 pic comparo is here with nokia n90 and SE w900i . Link here

I cant comment on philips 960 as I have not seen the pic. Check at the store and let me know.

b) First and foremost forget to get a good quality pic from any windows phone. For some reason the quality is still below par than competition. For wireless these phones are the best. I have mentioned the phones according to the usage above. Ask me if u have any doubts. If your palm has bluetooth then addressbook sync wont really be a problem.

A) To replace a smartphone i.e. the 7610 I would suggest you stay with a smartphone if you are a phone geek. try the philips 960 if you are the outgoing type. Linux will be fun to use and tweak with. Otherwise Sharp 903 will be the best bet for a camera. Its a bit heavy though. A compromise on sharp 903 camera and weight will be the Sonyericsson models. Samsung d600 is good looking but too similar to D500. camera is 98% as good as sonyericsson and 100% as good as nokia n90.N90 is not worth the price to pay for as of now. Its too big and Carl zeiss is more of a gimmick.

B) For the second phone I recommend the nokia E70. For just webmail it is pretty enough and qwert keyboard will help.Voip support will be a boon if you use ISD.Blackberry connectivity will also satisfy your thirst for a blackberry device. Its not yet available

another option would be xda atom or imate jamin.Benq p50 and eten m600(dunno if its really available in INdia) also comes with wifi and Skype VOIP.

Lemme know if you have more questions.

a thought just crossed my mind.if i get this sharp 903 i will be able to put my orange sim card in right or is it like those tata phones without a sim card.because i read somewhere thats its a sim less phone.

The word is sim-free. Sim-free in UK means a phone without any simcard or a phone without any locked networks. If you want a new GSM phone for use in India then Sim-free gsm phones is what you should look for. Tata is CDMA.

ok thanx for the detailed confusing explanation lol.so if i buy the sharp 903 from hongkong or singapore or malaysia and get it to india i will be able to use it with my orange sim card right.man i suck at this.

also could you explain whats GSM and CDMA.thanx a lot dude.youve been a great help.

Yes you can use the sharp phone. Your Orange sim card will support it as its a tri-band phone. 900/1800/1900 with UMTS:). Make sure that its sim-free though.

Hutch,Orange,Airtel and other cellular providers which provides services with a simcard is known as gsm services.(G)lobal (S)ystem for (M)obile communication

Reliance and Tata which provide services with a simless handset is a cdma technology((C)ode (D)ivision (M)ultiple (A)ccess))

Hey Navin,

I didnt post much about philips 960 above.

Finding information on the philips 960 was tough. But then that's how I like it.
A linux inside the phone is something I love. But the OS is closed end, hence no extra tweaking or applications.

My friend once bought philips 530 on my recommendation. Believe it was worth the price. the radio was excellent and so was the display and build quality. As i said resale will be less. I have already mentioned the authorized places where philips phones will be available in Mumbai.

I finally found out some reviews which are in Russian. The snaps from the camera look nice but not as good as SE. The double flash is a boon too. 30 FPS video is again good and resolution of 352x288. Downside will be lack of autofocus and a tuner compared to Sonyericsson phones. This one uses SD memory card and is also within 100gms. Price must be surely less.

The Russian Review has also praised the reception quality of the phone.

Dev, supe thanks for the long and detailed answers.

A. the 7610 is used by my wife becuase it was the 1st phone we found with a 1.3MP camera. She dont care about email but she would love a good camera. So what SHe needs is a light weight phone with a good camera. She uses the camera to take pics of our son and she does NOT want a flip phone. A Slider is something she will tolerate but she would prefer a bar phone.

options:
Philips 960
Samsung P860 (if under 100gms) or D600
SE W800/810i (if it goona be worth the cost of discarding all the micro SD cards)

B. The 6230i and T5 are used by me. I find it a bloody headace to carry 2 devices and often forget the T5 on my desk or at home. I woulld like to have one device instead. What I need is 1 device that has a decent camera, WiFi and a screen/keyboard that can handle webmail. I use the camera for work.

options:
Nokia E70
O2 Atom (really wish the O2 mini had a 2MP camera)
SE P990
....
these 2 have no qwerty keyboards for email/webmail?
Nokia N80
Samsung i750

Do you see any other options for Users A or B?

Ref: MicroSD/SD/MMC
Between the 2 of us we have lots of microSd (3 x 256MB) and MMC (3 x 256MB) cards and my latop has a SD card reader as well. so shifting to memory stick would mean a loss of these advantages.

In addition to this we got 2 x 1GB SD cards for my T5 and our Panasonic AV100 video cam and FX7 digicam also shoot on SD card (we have got 2 x 1GB SD cards for each those devices).

A:- 7610 is not 1.3 mp. tehcnically speaking its not even 1mp. Internationally the first Megapixel phone was siemens s65 with 1.23mp camera.

looks like your wife only needs a basic phone with good camera.
options for her would be philips 960 and samsung d600. take your wife to the shop. Show her the phones and ask her to use them and see which phone she finds convenient. pics are better on d600 but philips camera will be easy to use.

samsung p860 is not available yet and SE wont cut out with memory stick
other phones will be over 110grams. And on top of that none use MMC/SD cards. other options are

siemens sxg75 all in one- RS-mmc- radio,gps,music player,3g,2mp camera, candybar,linux OS,BreW UIone.

nokia n70- RS-DV-MMC 3g,radio,mp3 ,2mp camera,symbian

nokia 6270- minisd stereo speakers, radio,2mp camera,mp3 player.

nokia 6280- minisd same except 3g and no stereo speakers.

B) Remember a fact that none, I repeat none of the windows phones have good camera as of now.

samsung i750 is available in two versions. CDMA has qwerty while GSM has a number pad. Uses t-flash memory hence none of your card will work. no recommended. Demand has been low in US.
nokia n80 will be a good buy with 3mp camera but be prepared to pay high price for the bigger resolution camera. p990 and nokia E70 are also yet to be released

looks for xda atom, benq p50, eten m600.

atom has radio,2mp camera,stereo speaekres,256k(gimmick), mp3 player,windows mobile 5, compact design, wifi etc

benq p50 has :- quad-band, 256k screen, Skype VOIp, wifi, qwerty keypad, 1.3 mp camera with flash

eten m600 :- Different design, wifi, brighter screen, skype, opera and lots accessories.

Dont confuse yourself with more options.

btw just got myself a sandisk 2gig sd card for my motorola E680i for $99CAd shipped free.

A) for my wife I'll let her choose between the Philips 960, Samsung D600 and Nokia 6280 or N70. Is it worth waiting for the P860? Also the Nokia are a bit heavier than the Philips and Samsung.

B) I am not very restricted by price. My office picks up my tab (for my phone not my wife) as it used for work. Will the N80 be worth the wait? I have used the P910i and did not care for it. It was too huge to hold to one's ear. I fear of the phones I have shortlisted for me only the E70 will feel like a phone. the others P990, N80, Atom etc... will feel like I am talking into my Palm T5! Right?

nokia 6270 has stereo speakers while 6280 has 3g video calling. I would buy 6270 as 3g video calling is not yet available in India and even in Europe its in infancy. Nokias will be heavy though. N70 will be worthless against d600 if you are comparing photo quality. On the other hand n70 is a symbian smartphone which I dont think your wife will be tweaking with.

philips will be cheaper but even resale will be less. samsung d600 is a best seller currently from samsungs stable. D600 resale wont be bad and it is lighter than nokias

I have used symbian/palm/windows/linux pda's and All i can say is pda phones are for geeks like me and maybe you. otherwise for ease of use stay with smartphones.

p990 will be the biggest here. Stay away if you dont like bulk. additionally benq P50 and eten m500 are equally good and competitive if you wont mind missing on 2mp camera and radio.:)

Xda atom is really small and handy. have a look first. But with the atom you will still feel like you are talking into your T5.

N80 and E70 are like normal phones. recommended for normal daily usage.

Thnaks a lot Dev,

Short list

Wife: Philips 960, Samsung D600 and Nokia 6280 (it is narrower and a bit lighter) or maybe I wait for the 6234/6233? I'm told they are expected in not already available. The 6234 has HSCSD.

Me: O2 Atom or Nokia E70 or N80. does the N80 have a keypad?

when is the e70 coming out?approx price?

guys which phone would you people suggest in a 10k budget? and a 16k budget?

imo
shorlisted these fones for abt 10k budget:
motolorla razr black v3
motorola l7
nokia 6630
nokia 3230

requirement is:should be stylish and should have good messaging capabilties.good looks is an major factor, secondary is messaging capabilties.camera and other stuff not that imp.

in 16k budget

nokia 6680
nokia 6681
nokia 6270
motorola razr v3i

this phone is gonna be for me,and i need an slightly tough phone due to my usage.heart is towards v3i,but mind says 6680,what do u people suggest??

ps:for me resale is of an importance too,so i am not that keen on philips, siemens etc.
