Hey guys,

Planning to buy a Samsung Galaxy S2. I do not want the G version that is sold in India. So looking at Singapore and Europe to source them. Can anyone confirm if its the original i9100 or i9100G that is sold in Singapore and Europe. please:

If it happens to be the G version in both these countries, then will settle for a i9070 S Advance.

Inappropriate comparison, one must say. We tend to take a different view of affordability and tolerance of cost than Singaporeans. A common man in India will aspire at most for a Bata shoe, a Singaporean of the same affordability will buy a Gucci if he thinks it is necessary for his appearance.

Top performing smartphone at <5000? Noble expectation, sir, just like the Govt. chasing wild geese in trying to get affordable computing to the masses. Whether Simputer or the 2.5K tablet, so far there have been devices that are either promises or are practically dysfunctional. I am sure some Chinese company will ultimately do it, and consumers in India will say 'Tchah, Made in China'!!! :p

Yes Singaporeans do tolerate high prices when it comes to clothes and gadgets and BMWs. But they're a glutton for cheap prices too. You should see how their kiasu makes them pile up at the cheapest shop at every hawker center and tolerate poor quality food just because it's cheapest in that hawker center.

e.g:

Hoarding food on one's plate during a buffet lunch in case the catering runs out of food later.
Joining a queue many days in advance just to successfully corner a limited free ticket.
parents imposing heavy study labor on their kids driven by a desire to make them better the neighbours' kids.

Now the Singapore govt is trying to temper Kiasu-ism with public "Politeness Campaigns".}

That said, there are many more gentry in urban India than in all of Singapore who can afford a Rs. 40,000 iPhone, and won't.

Not top performing Aniruddha. I mean: performing at least as reliably, glitch-free as the Symbian S40 devices ! If it doesn't perform, they shouldn't try to market it.

Err... capitalism, sir. Their money, their loss, who are we to say anything other than not choose them.

You should try out the ubiquitous 'China' phones - most sell because they have a loud loudspeaker-like sound, and no one bothers about device or battery life, after-sales service, buggy features and slow response.

I was of a similar mental makeup till I laid hands on the iPhone 4 and started using it. Now regret the decision for buying the Galaxy tab instead of the iPad 2. Once you use it you'll also get hooked. Basically, it has caught the imagination of the younger generation. At 52, I'm definitely not young but want to enjoy and be a part of 'gadget mania' which our generation missed out on in our youth. Making up for lost time, if you can call it that.

How advisable is it to buy a mobile phone which supports microSIM ?

What is the trend expected in the future ? Will all phone manufacturers provide micro SIM support in the future ?

The most frustrating part is that there is no adaptor which can be used to connect micro SIM in a phone which supports normal SIM. Why didn't the designers think about backward compatibility ? :Frustrati

Have been reading about extending battery life by using slow chargers, but never got a chance to experiment until recently.

My Nokia E63 came with 5v, 890mA charger and goes from zero to full in about 90 mins.

Wife's Nokia 3500c and recently acquired 101 Dual sim came with 5V, 450 mA charger and both take about 90 mins to full charge.

Mom's ancient Nokia came with a 5V, 350mA charger and I used that to charge my E63. It takes about 3hrs to fully charge, but the standby time has improved by 20% easily. Earlier, I used to get about 4.5 days of standby. After slowcharge, I got 6.5 days and still the last bar is on. No Low battery warning.

Heat dissipation is also better on slow charge with no noticeable warmth. Using the normal charger, the battery feels warm after an hour.
