Pretty sleek & ofcourse much better than the E63. However the app store condition is still as poor as it was a year ago. Its nowhere near Android & iOS app stores. |

Thanks, how do I upgrade to 7.1? It came with OS 7.0. I tried checking for updates & it says that its up to date. |
You could probably download the OS update, based on the country/service provider at
BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop and Device Software Download Sites
Not sure if the service providers here in India have released their official version of the updated OS.Normally, you could download the BB Device OS selecting the country/service provider/Device Model and install it in your comp. Then update the device via the BBerry desktop manager app(it shows update available).Usually works. There are other thirdparty tools like BBSAK (Blackberry Swiss Army Knife) which could help you to upgrade the device OS.Check for more info on
http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-install-official-and-leaked.
Note there are risks (data loss/device becoming unstable and unusuable if the update is not initiated in a proper way). You could go through the demos/quick guides available on the RIM/Blackberry support forums that will give you an overview of the entire procedure.Good Luck :)
Thanks for the information, I will read some more & update accordingly :)

In fact the reality of Android world is, by the time G3 comes, somebody or the other would have announced something even better!
The wait for something better is a never-ending one nowdays!
Just to add OneX does not have "worst" battery life (by the way worst compared to what?). Most reviewers online (be it engadget or theverge or gsmarena etc) have been very favorable about it lasting one useful day even on heavy usage. |
Sirji, newer and better models keep coming every minute, so nothing is out of the world.
Last year, the top contenders were HTC Sensation and SGS2. Surely no one has any doubt on which sold more. lol:
This year its between OneX and SGS3, let us see which one fares better.

Well last year it was S2 vs pretty much everything and S2 just trounced everything. I have no problems with that. It deserved its success.
I went for sensation as it served my needs better. It again matters nought that it did not sell as much as one other phone. I do not gain anything by its success or failure. My requirements are pretty simple - telephony, and Internet and navigation sometimes. For these, and especially for Web browsing the qHD resolution of Sensation was better buy at that time.
Sensation was my first Android device and while it might be the last, what I have resolved is that all my future devices will always be the official Google phones! All other OEMs be it Samsung or HTC or LG are just pathetic with their update support!
In fact I wouldn't buy the S3 unless Samsung gave an option to use android unadulterated and promised updates the moment Google released any. I would not buy the OneX at all!!
Hi I have to gift a phone to my cousin. Was considering the Samsung galaxy y. Basically looking at an entry level android phone around 7-8k. Is there any other alternative to it in the same price bracket? Also how is the galaxy y for the price it comes at? Are the phones in this bracket any good for basic net surfing, facebook, youtube, games and basic apps like lets say the talking tom? Or is it better to increase the budget and get the Galaxy ace?
Dr Mohit:
Entry level Android phones are really not worth it. Many and I mean many, apps will lag, the launcher will lag, there will be no custom roms, and the experience will be pretty sour. I would suggest you go for at least 1 GHz processor with @512 MB RAM to really experience a Android. At a price range of 7-8 K Nokia still rules the roost.

If your budget is fixed, consider the HTC Explorer. It does all what you're looking for.

Have you tried the Idea Blade? Best screenwise VFM phone.

The Idea Blade has only 256MB RAM plus the customer service sucks a big time.
My mom has a Idea Blade. The touch screen went kaput within a week. It took one bloody month and lot of calls to get the phone back after getting the board replaced. Plus they didn't give replacement phone. :(

Isn't Idea Blade same as Dell XCD35? I have XCD35 which has 512mb RAM. It has good support from Cyanogenmod, works amazingly smooth and fast.

But the galaxy Y has 830Mhz processor right? That should be sufficient for running basic apps isn't it? The user we are considering this for is a 15 year old school kid.

No my cousin would kill me. Idea is not exactly a great brand to show off na. Have to choose between Samsung/Nokia/HTC. Since I have been using Samsung for a year now and quite happy with the S2 , hence was considering the Galaxy Y.

SGY = Crap all screen saar. 320x240.
Better is Ace.
A friend bought one for his daughter recently. Looks ALOT like the iphone (as I learned from her). Therefore she's happy.
Rest all is moh maya.
I understand point on Idea Blade then.
@Gandhi ji - now I remember. sorry. the Idea Blades come with some other factory restriction on the RAM which cannot be unlocked as of now. ignore that advise then. the XCD35 rocked at its final sale price IMHO
If the kid is a boy, then look for 800x480 screen or atleast 320x480

You have not stated if your cousin is a boy or a girl. Without this info, it is not possible to suggest an appropriate phone.

If not samsung Id recommend Htc explorer. Priced at around 8.5k its a pretty rough and tough phone and can withstand the extremes of use. My friend has it and ive used it for over a day. Its got a pretty decent browser(booked online tickets) a decent music player and Htc sense UI.
If your cousin is a girl and you are increasing your budget then galaxy ace + is a viable option. The white version of this phone just looks like an iPhone from the front plus lot of cases and backcovers are available in the market for the ace. So can be customised according to individual tastes.
Htc wildfire S is also a sleek phone around the Ace price range. And its pretty good or rather better than ace in someways.
Why are you looking at only android phones though? If your cousin has a computer they can also opt for windows phones such as lumia 710 and samsung omnia w at the same price range. Look for deals on ebay. Today lumia 710 sold for around 12.7k.
All the phones mentioned above have all the features that you wanted. Facebook twitter youtube browsing. However for the price range lumia 710 offers more bang for the buck and also its available in multiple colors. Plus a better camera than all other phones in that category.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys. The phone is for my cousin sister. I wanted to get the Ace but would have been quite a stretch for me. So skipped on it. She anyways wanted a Galaxy Y only ( some of her friends have got one I guess). So bought the Galaxy Y in the evening for 7k in white colour.
