The way he had described, it appeared to me that *he* has installed Good app on his phone, rather than it being an enterprise-level app. That's why I suggested him to get rid of that and move to some other app.

In any case, the rooted phone argument and reliance on a single email solution seems quite far fetched. Is there NO ONE ELSE in the company having a rooted/custom ROM'med phone?

You won't be wasting a lot of time. Just backup your WA data using their menu options and uninstall it. In the meantime, search around for .1547 ver of the app. You'll find the APK easily. Once you run and install it, everything would be restored automatically.

What is most likely happening is that with more RAM, the phones must be caching the app and service most of the time. In that case, even though the new version is significantly heavier, it isn't being noticed as the phone has to just pull it out of the cache.

Phones with lesser RAM and with more service running would purge WA (not entirely, the service is always running) when not in use. You can see that that it occupies varying amounts of RAM - less when not in use). So when you need to launch it again, it has to pull it from the internal memory. Even on my phone, once the app is cached, the lag is much lesser. But use the phone a bit for other things, which leads to WA being purged, then you see very significant lag when you try to relaunch WA. Remember that this lag was MUCH lesser in the pre-holo versions.

You are spot on. I have a Defy (512 MB RAM) and a GNex (1 GB RAM) in the family. While WA lags like crazy on my phone, it runs just fine on Nexus.

If every app starts going the WA way, then you can be pretty sure your upper end phone will also be on its knees overnight. The internal memory footprint itself has increased from some 9 MB to almost 15 MB. RAM usage is also significantly higher.

This much change just for some small changes in the UI? Does anybody still think this is an efficient well coded app? WA is now the slowest app on my phone by far. Far more complex apps load way faster.

Sadly most apps are moving to the Holo theme. Latest to join the bandwagon today was Twitter. Personally I have never liked the Holo/ICS theme. That's the reason I couldn't stick ICS and JB stock ROM on Defy.

^^^But has the inclusion of the Holo theme induced so much lag as it has in Whatsapp?

I'm not so sure about the Holo theme in WA - its slighly better in some aspects... things like the Send bution getting larger along with the message composing window. But then there are other irritants like needing more clicks to expand a contact's display picture.

In case of WA, the benefits are very small, and the disadvantages (lag, etc) is huge.

Dude, I guess read my post in a hury, I've installed a custom modified stock ROM with a custom kernel, for that you need to do a factory reset. Even if you do a factory reset, there wont be any data loss for the images and other files stored in other folders, only contacts, messages and system folders will be affected. You can always take a backup for call history, SMSes, by using various apps from the play store if you are skeptical about the data integrity during the upgrade. Even Samsung will suggest you to do that before upgrade IIRC, its been a long time with Kies.

If you are a flashaholic of ROMs, it wont be an issue for you. If its an update from Sammy, there wont be any data loss as Kies will take care of it, but at the expense of time. If you need the max out of your phone, custom ROM is the way. You can make a visit at I9100 forums in xda-developers.com for more details.

For backup I use mybackup pro which is very light for the phone as well as to my pocket too. For SMS I use SMS backup and for call history - call log backup both from Ritesh. I assume that your contacts are synced with google in that case you need not to take a backup for the contacts, the moment you feed the google id and PWD, it will be copied to your phone.

+1 Sajjt.

I keep changing ROMS on my S3 and i backup SMS, apps (using titanium backup) and media, thats it. Never had any issue.

Currently with Cyanogenmod 10.1. Except the lousy battery life (Only 12 hrs without a re-charge), the phone is very good. Blazingly fast. Need to customized the screens with uccw soon.

Considering the points I have stated above, I'd suggest that all Whatsapp users take a minute to leave a 1 star rating on the Play Store with an appropriate comment. You can of course add stars later, depending on how they fix their mess. Right now they ain't even acknowledging it.

Request for a dark theme and ability to move to SD could also help.

High end phone users, do consider that the issue concerns you too, at least indirectly - if more apps start going the Whatsapp way, you can be certain that your higher end phones will come to a crawl too.

Interestingly, Whatsapp claims technical limitations for not being able to move the app to SD. But other messengers which do more than WA (like Skype) can be moved to SD!

Is there any possibiity that you root your phone, do your stuff like removing system apps & blotware, then again unroot your Defy (IIRC, it is possible).
Then install the Good email client?

IDK, but this way you can have a overclocked Defy with somewhat smooth & lite OS with necessary office compatibility.

Defy users who have overclocked, can you share your Vsel settings?

Also what is the formula to arrive at the values? Xda threads say it's a trial and error process. But there must be some method to the madness?

Now that Micromax A116 Canvas HD phone is available, any of our members have bought it? if so, please let me know if its a good buy. Thank you!

I moved from the ageing Motorola Quench XT3 to a Xolo Q800 - what a difference!! I'm not sure if the cores get used at all by Android or any of the apps, but the 1GB RAM sure kicks in and performance is awesome. And the battery - that's what I truly need in my phones since we keep travelling up and down the countryside a lot for work - right how its 46+ hrs since the full charge - average number of calls, data on about half the time, a couple of docs edited and reviewed, wifi with app upgrades and installs, a few emails responded to (I have 3 accounts), the usual FB/Twitter updates. And I have 40% juice remaining!! Earlier cycles lasted lesser - but in any case easily over 24 hours.

The camera is very decent. Wifi connects better than our laptops at home. Audio is so-so. But overall a pretty good buy for 12.5k (I managed a weeek old one for 11k).

I did write a longer review here in case you're keen to read. Personal blog, not a promo of a professional one etc.

I don't have answers for both the questions :(

But this is the error message I got after entering the new PIN post wipe-off and reset, "Account Disabled - Good for Enterprise was not in compliance and has been wiped and disabled. Contact your IT administrator." I checked with the IT Admin and they said rooted phones are not allowed to access the system.

Good to know about 'Touchdown' but is it possible for us to configure corporate e-mail?

Edit: Thanks for the clarification amitk26.

Now I'm in a dilemma. Stick with a rooted phone with better performance or roll over to the stock ROM with mediocre performance but access to e-mails:Frustrati

Here is a shot in the dark - is there no way to limit permissions of all kind to good app (so that it can't find out the phone is rooted!)? :p

else unroot like the others said.

While I appreciate the IT team's paranoia - if it is a company paid phone, they have a right over dictating terms. if not, then ask your company to take a hike, and buy you a phone if they want you to respond while on the move.

I think apps like Good requires you to give "Device Administrator" privileges on the phone. The moment you remove administrator rights, it stops syncing the corporate account. I've tried and failed to do this on my Atrix 2 :Frustrati Luckily, my IT dept. stopped the habit of enforcing PIN locks for Androids.
Regarding devices provided by Company IT, most of them still rely on Blackberry. For eg. my company has a BYOD policy and a BB policy. If I ask for a device, they'll provide me a BB for sure. Or else, I can take my device and club it with my corporate account, and they will pay for the data plan. Its my choice. I chose the latter because I am not at all a fan of this idea of carrying around two devices :)

Whether it's far fetched or not, companies have some policies and when we don't run them, we aren't going to get answers for the why it is so.

Most of them use BB. Android phones are very limited, so I haven't heard of anyone using a rooted/custom ROM phone with 'Good'.

Interesting, now how should that be done? :)

phamilyman, the problem is that due to security restrictions I can't be playing around with the settings of the 'Good' application. It's my personal phone and my choice to use the e-mail app ONLY if I agree to the policy. So we kind of have limited choices like unrooting the phone after removing the bloatware.

Here the only difference is that I don't get paid for the data plan.

Now I can understand the strong fort (not for long in the future I guess) held by BB in the Enterprise E-mail space.

Yes, there are lot of initiatives like Samsung KNOX happening these days to introduce military grade encryption and security standards into Android to make it more Corporate friendly and to match up with BB security standards. The irony is that on the other side, BB has already changed their internal architecture to Microsoft Active Sync and they are introducing things like BB Balance to attract more non-corporates to BB :uncontrol

Wonderful so atleast people now are aware about it .. Can't say anything more on public forum.

So Facebook launches new Android Integrated app that runs on the Home of your Android device.

More Info on how it works is here:

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/facebook-...383236-11.html

It is already integrated into 6 devices as per the quote below. 12th April onwards, it can be downloaded and installed on Android devices.
Quote:

Facebook has announced the Facebook Home app for Android, with an idea to bring content right to you, rather than require people to check apps on the device. Android users can download the app from the Google Play store starting April 12. But only six devices - HTC One, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note II and HTC First will initially support the new Facebook Home app.
My take on this is that it would kill your battery life. Also, I am not sure if it would run on all versions of Android devices due to hardware limitations of the low cost Android phones..
Moreover, if you switch off your Mobile data for some time, the home page would "probably" show an eye sore error display.
Nevertheless, its an amazing technology development in terms of heavy FB users, like my brother for instance. :D

Some more information about how this FB Home works.
