Laptop Problem...Urgent help required

Guys,

My Compaq V 1040 laptop refused to start up couple of days back.
Its just 2 months out of the warranty period.
The HP service center guys in Delhi have said that the motherboard is gone and will have to be replaced. They have quoted me Rs. 30,000 for replacing.
I just want to know if i have any other options as it seems too expensive to me. I might as well put in some more money and buy a new laptop.
I am not a very technical guy, so just wanted an opinion if there is any possibility of buying a new motherboard and replacing it from the market on my own.
Guys please help

Dude, if you were in bangalore I wouldve surely got it repaired if there is a probability of doing so...PM me if you are willing to bring it down for high end diagnosis.

What are the symptoms? Do you get any sort of display at all and/or LEDs turning on?

Thanks for your replies guys.

There are absoloutely no lights or anything happening. When I press the power switch, nothing happens, I mean really nothing ...... no LEDs. lights etc. Its absolutely dead.

And I wasnt planning to do it myself.
What I mean is, is it possible to get the motherboard replaced outside in the market ( not at the HP service center) at a more reasonable cost. Is there something like this easily available and can it be easily installed.

Try starting with a different battery of same model (check with your friends/colleagues for similar model). BTW how old is your laptop.

From the looks of it, it does appear that something is fried. Since it is out of warranty, you may want to attempt getting it checked at a place that specializes in chip level repairs. Chances are, you could get it fixed for as low as Rs. 1000.

check battery and power supply. if the laps too old, there can a chance your power connect point is busted.

Pardon me if you have already tried it. If you switch off laptop while network connections are not shutdown properly, it will refuse to boot up normally. Keep the power button pressed for 5 seconds to bring it up.

Have the HP folks physically inspected it? If yes, then ignore above as they would have tried it out themselves. If the motherboard is fried, not much that you can do about it.

The problem could be around the power unit and battery. At worst they might have gone bust and rest of the system is still intact. Get it to some reputed computer repair shop.

You can go to nehru place. It has got "unauthorized" laptop repair shops. In most cases it is a case of a blown cap, or track. It will cost you 1000rs approx. I do not know any shops in delhi(havent been there for long) but I guess if you ask around in your workplace about a reliable shop it should help

Got the whole problem sorted out at Nehru Place for 3500 bucks.
Works like a charm now, no issues.

It really makes one wonder what justification the authorized service center has to quote ten times the real cost of fixing the problem.
I am really gonna think carefully before buying another HP product.

Thanks to all who tried to help.
