Re: 3.5G Testing going on?

HSDPA and 3G are very related terms and in places across globe scaled down HSDPA is termed as 3G. 4G is LTE technology which is just launched in some part of US and Europe.

Almost all of the operators going to launch 3G services in India and no doubt it requires extensive testing before rolling out to customer officially.

Many official testers hire car and whole day roam around different part of city for testing. They go to small small roads and prepare log of testing. During such testing cycle you might have encountered HSDPA service temporarily.

Yea but its marketed as 4G (much to the annoyance of Verizon/Sprint) and they require you to get a 4G handset.

3.5G can use a 3G handset I suppose.

Re: 3.5G Testing going on?

Yeah they like to call it 4G & if you tell the sales/stores guy that its actually not then they say its 4G like speeds

My handset is a HTC MyTouch 4G & the data plan too is called 4G data plan.

Today, I found that the pages are opening a little too fast, and it was showing "H" in the notification bar.
I ran speedtest, and my download speed was 1.3 Mbit/s

Now, I do not have any 3G plan on my mobile.
Moreover, if 3G is used, I would see 3G in notification bar.
According to the manual, H means HSPDA, which is actually 3.5G.

I do not remember reading about HSPDA in India? So I am wondering if reliance GSM is testing HSPDA. Well its good while it lasts, unless they decide to bill me!

this is a bit old in the sense, there is nothing much to worry about

for 99 bucks you get 2.5gb in reliance (both pre and post paid). currently as a promotion they allow 3g speeds if you switch your phone to UMTS mode. 3g you will be in /3.5g mode

so enjoy it while it lasts unless you are a use and pay as you go use for GPRS, in which case subscribe to a pack for a month and enjoy...

EVDO is already present from last 3.5 to 4yrs. In fact BSNL, Tata, Reliance, MTS etc all use evdo on cdma, which theoretically can give you max 3.1Mbps.

Re: 3.5G Testing going on?

Guys the 3.5G or the HSPA+ is already here with most of the service providers opting for the 3.5G over 3G due to better speeds that it can support. Technically if your device is capable, HSPA+ can give upto 21 mbps connection speeds - Samsung Galaxy S2 is capable of this speeds. BSNL, MTNL, Reliance, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Tata all are using the HSPA capable network which is why you will see H on your phone when the 3G Data is enabled. Enjoy the speeds at the moment. You might not get this long once there are more subscribers on board for 3g

Re: 3.5G Testing going on?

I think we have too many Gs in the mobile networking.

2G - GSM, cdmaone
2.5G - GPRS
2.75G (?) - EDGE, cdma 1xRTT
3G - UMTS, 1xEV-DO
3.5G - HSPA, EV-DO (called 3G in India)
3.75G (?) 3.9G (?) pre-4G (?) - HSPA+, LTE , wimax (current) (called 4G across the world)
4G - LTE-Advanced, mobile-wimax (future)

Engadget wrote an article on this marketing hoopla few weeks ago. Here is the link: 2G, 3G, 4G, and everything in between: an Engadget wireless primer -- Engadget
