Steve Jobs once said "Good artists copy; great artists steal."

Actually, Jobs was quoting Picasso who had said it.

And if you think a little about that quote, you'll see that what Picasso meant was that all art is influenced by the art that came before it. Some artists duplicate what has happened before... and they can do a pretty good job of duplicating. But the great ones take the influences and reinterpret them in fresh, new ways and thereby make them entirely their own. Hence, the 'stealing.'

TS Eliot, the great poet, had said something very similar: "One of the surest tests [of the superiority or inferiority of a poet] is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn..."

Picasso and Eliot (and, by extension, Jobs) was not encouraging stealing. They were simply saying that with all the inspiration around us, it is imperative of greatness to take what has come before and create something new, not merely churn out a very good copy.

For a change, Apple is not involved in this new court case. Mobile companies spend more time and money in courts these days than on R&D.

Is this a sign of saturation in mobile handset designing field? I think every mobile company should lock their engineers in isolation till something unique comes out. These engineers should not have any access to the outside world till the design is ready.

Another interesting patent - Apple files patent for “Shake to Print”

I have seen it on multiple Android screen capture apps. This is getting ridiculous.

One more patent granted for Apple couple of days back - Portable display device. This basically covers anything that looks like iPad.

This sentence is churned out often on various consumer centric websites posing as techsites ( example techcrunch , CNET, ZDNET ..) but trust me people who need to be locked are patent attornys , Marketing managers and managers entrusted to put block on comptetion using patents and not engineers, Starting with the officials of patent offices of several countries who give home advantage to several firms in granting patents.

BTW: Noartis vs Union of India case pending in Supreme Court will be landmark and will impact a lot of countries and several sectors. Pressure is huge on India from developed countries but lets see.

And a related news is that today CIPLA crashed the prices of several cancer drugs I think it is high time psudo-tech sites take notice of happening in pharma world and extend it to gadgets to build support for FSF cause against software patenting
