What a bummer that AT is not an option on low end cars. Maruti, how about offering an AT Alto? All I need is a small car with AC and Auto Trans.
Couple questions for the experts....
Has anyone driven the 3 speed Auto transmission - Wagon R? Are there any jerks during gear changes? Should I buy the Santro AT just because it has 4 speed or is it really a lot more smoother?

Just FYI. When I enquired about Wagon-R Automatic at a Maruti dealer in Bangalore, they said you have to pay the entire Amount (OTR price) at the time a Booking and then wait for 3 months for the delivery!
What the hell?

I don't get it. I would think a lot of people, (expecially the ladies) would appreciate driving AT cars. So, Santro is probably the only sane small car with Auto Trans.

I doubt if Maruti is selling the AT models anymore! The Wagon R AT has no appreciable jerks especially when the acceleration is smooth. But to be fair, the gearing is not correct and after about 80 kph, the engine noise does intrude. But then the three gears feel like the first three gears of a manual gearbox and so the car feels very peepy and driveable.

The number of gears and the gearing will definitely tell on the mileage and the best I could eke out in a month that I used it was 12.5 kpl with 100% AC.

Please remember that the AT Wagon R (if available) comes without power steering and in city drive you will wish you had one.

The Santro AT does come with power steering. Cannot say more as I have not driven one.

Rajesh,
Thanks for your reply.

I hate to buy something where I do not have an option. I will ditch the Auto Trans, and compare the Santro XL, Wagon R LXI, and the Zen LXI before I make the final decision.
