Esteem 99 vs Palio 2001 vs .....

Hey ppl!

I have been looking for a used car the last few weeks...2 cars which I am considering are:
1. Nov 1999 Esteem LX at 1.40 lacs (no nego till now)
2. Dec 2001 Palio 1.2 also arnd 1.40

My budget is max 1.5lacs. Would you guys suggest somethin else also in this range? (late 90s astras, escorts, zens?)

My expectations from this car - A good highway companion as I plan to go on long road trips in this one, decent mileage (not a priority) and maintenance costs(a priority). As I will be using this car only for say, the next 2 years, I would expect a decent price for the vehicle then.

Thanks a Ton,
Fatal3rror

it depends on the condition of the vehicle. how much is the odo, how may owners, tyres, etc... if all these looks ok for u then its an ok deal.

Esteem would be a better buy ! The factors that contribute to this suggestion are:

1. Easy and cheaper maintenance
2. Driving pleasure
3. Reliability
4. Decent fuel efficiency
5. Pride of ownership

The above stems from the fact that yours truly owns an Esteem for the last 4 years and has personally experienced all of the above.

Even though both cars are good for you i think Esteem would do better

Pro's for the esteem
1. You can get it fixed in every corner of India, for going long drives in rural areas it is better to have a car that can get fixed in the same place than having to tow it back to town.

2. Would be cheaper in the Spares area and availability of them. Though fiat Spares are not exactly expensive it might be a spot of bother for now to get them

3. Resale value .. Well it might get you better money when you sell.

As for the Palio

1. It is built like a tank
2. You are getting a MPFI engine vis a vis a Carb in Esteem
3. The ride is sweeter for a palio

All the above suggestions would be moot if the Palio has run say 50K where as the Esteem had run 100K . So the mileage and general outlook of the car also play in a big role.

Also considering you are in Pune you might be able to get a cheaper deal in Mumbai if you can spare a trip and may be find a newer better palio for around 1.5 instead of trying to get the value down on the present deals. May be Mumbaiker members can help

As for me i have a Palio

Why do you ask!! Its the Palio and nothing else. If you dont belive me take the two vehicles for a drive on the highway. You wont believe the difference in the ride comfort and the confidence you'll get in the FIAT unless you experience it first hand. The only thing that could matter is the availability of spares. But with the new palio on the block you just wont have to worry since anyways you plan to keep the vehicle only for 2 years. But ensure that the palio has been treated well by the earlier owner. Parts are not that costly. and more over you wont need the change anything frequently since they are of good quality. You just need to enquire how the guys at the service centre near to you are. Just meet them up and talk to them. Get friendly with someone out there and i'm sure they'll take care you your vehicle. I guess with TVS out of the scene things would be far better. Anyways Best of luck and do use your seatbelts and please...please dont use your mobile while you drive.

do you mean to say 1.2 for 1.2 for the 2001 model !!!....
damn!!!, i was doubtful to buy an used alto or santro(with ac and power-steering) for that money.

OT: how does the 1.2 palio behave for a city usage??? and what would be the expected repairs say if the car has run for about 50,000km. and fianlly is it fine to buy a palio 1.2 which has run about 50,000km.

The 1999 Esteem would be nothing but a rattling bunch of metal components held together by rusted nuts and bolts. In case you buy this, do remember to be gentle over speed breakers.

BTW, the Palio's wheelbase is longer than the Esteem's. Add to that, it is wider, heavier and higher than the Esteem. Did I forget to mention that it also has better ground clearance, more head room and more leg room! And if I am not wrong, the Palio 1.2, 2001 is also more powerful than the 1999 Esteem.

In case you buy the Palio, get a good polish job done after a wash. You'll be in for a pleasant surprise!

hey guys!
thnks fr ur inputs...but i think im more confused now!

I am more inclined towards the palio....the fact that it has an mpfi engine n is newer makes it more attractive. (no offence esteem fans!)
my only concerns are the resale price n the mileage...

Palio is the best for highway crusing. Once you drive palio you woudnt love any driving any other car. My friend recently bought used Palio 1.2 sports. And his dad is using carb Esteem. He said Esteem is no where once you drive Palio. He is getting 15+ mileage on highway with AC at 100+ KMPH, while city mileage he is getting is 10 KMPH with AC 100%.
But you said low on maintanance that can be expected on used Esteem. because Maruti are known for low maintanance.
