Help!! Need advice for a used car!!

Hi,

I am planning to go for a used car. We already have a Ford Ikon Flair. The second car is for my office commute, about 15km/day. For weekend trips or long drives, we will use the Ikon.

Seeing the rising fuel costs, is it ok to go for an electric car (Reva) or should i go for a diesel car or should i go for an LPG fitted car?

My requirements are:
1. The car should be low on maintenance: fuel, spares.
2. Dont need a spacious car (only for my office commute)

Budget is max: 3 laks

I am confused..

I would suggest you to get a Spark and get CNG fitted in it. Or you can buy second hand santro/wagon R. Get CNG fitted in them. Reva makes no sense when it comes to spares.

@ Orion : No point buying a Reva IMO.

Go for Spark or 2nd hand Wagon R and install CNG in it.

PS : how about waiting for the Nano??

I've a Wagon R, that runs 60 km / day, fabulously on CNG. But in your case, it makes no sense to get a CNG vehicle for just 15 KM a day. Even no point in diesel too. Get a used Wagon R and run on petrol.

For such low commute per day (hope 15km/day is both ways), why not look at even an used Alto. It would serve basic commuting purpose very well, unless you need big car feel while going to office.

After visiting the second hand showrooms in Bangalore, I am not considering maruti cars. They are very reliable and low on maintenance but there is very less difference between the OTR price of a new car and the second hand cars..

I went to a used car showroom and that person quoted 2.8laks for Alto Lxi (2005) , ex-showroom price is 2.85 laks. I can bargain but how much would he come down??

Many replies stated not to consider reva.. Can you please give me the reason? Reva spares: are they expensive? Getting them might not be a problem as the reva showroom/service centre is very near my office.

2.8lakhs for a 2005 Alto is absolute nonsense, you can bargain upto 1.8L that's 1 lakh less huh.... if the condition of the car is great with good tyres, interiors and accident free then max can be 2.2Lakhs, more than that, sorry boss,u loose.
By the way, there is car called Tara Tiny which is coming up, I saw those pictures and it resembled a younger sibling of Indica, inquire about that too, don't know when it's supposed to be launched.

2.8 Lacs !!! Must be 1.8 Lacs IMO. Just can't be !!

You can consider a 2nd Hand Tata Indica if you can find one in a good condition. As of today there is no car better than an Indica if you want low mantainance and running costs.

A 40k run Indica ( Private owned ) / 3 yr old V2 should be yours for around 2.25 Lacs at the most.

He quoted 2.8laks saying it has lots of accessories and very less km run.. blah blah.. I dropped the idea of buying it but the dealer keeps calling me everyday.. One day he says, i will reduce it by 5000.. another day "i will reduce the price by 10000) and so on..

Eventually, he might give it for free

Jokes apart, i dont trust that dealer. Can anyone give me the address od a good used car dealer in Bangalore?

I want to buy the car in max time of 2 months.. else i would have waited for the Nano.

Although 2.85 is the ex-showroom price, 3.3 is the on-road price. If in excellent condition, 2.4-2.6 is a decent price. That is the current price of second-hand Alto in Bangalore market.

Also, you can get a 2-year old WagonR LXi(~OTR 4.00) for ~3.25.

One more thing, its not only Maruti cars, all brands have high resale value in Bangalore.

Used Wagon R (if you can get their limited edition Primea), Or Alto. These are very fuel efficient and quite sufficient for office commutes though if you buy a Wagon R i suspect you'll end up using it a lot more! - thats a very good car.

I also appreciate your query on Reva and to me it seems a great idea but I think its better to check with the experts on that - Ive not heard much about spares, service etc etc. My neighbour owns one so will try and find out for you.

cheers

(Disclaimer: Replace values with what you feel is correct. I am preparing for Rs 100 a liter for petrol)

Fuel Cost
---------------------------------------------------------
So you drive 15 kms a day.
Assume you drive 25 days in a month.
Thats 375.
Assume a worst case milage of 10 kmpl.
thats 37.5 Liters of fuel.
Worst case scenario
Price of petrol = 100/-
You will spend 3750 every month on fuel.
Thats 45000 a year or 90000 in two years.

New car Alto Lxi = 3.23 on road.
---------------------------------------------------------
If you are buying a new car you save on the interest rate.
Assuming your car loan is for 300000.
You EMI for 3 years at 10% for 2 years is 13843.
13843 * 24 = 332232
Total cost of the car over two years =
332232 + 23k for the car + 7k for ICE = 362232
You will be able to sell it two years later for 240800.(carwale value for 2006 Alto)
cost of using this car is 121432.

Second hand Alto Lxi = 240800
--------------------------------------------------------
EMI for loan 200000 at 18% for 2 years is 9985
9985 * 24 = 239640
Total cost of car = 239640 + 40800 = 280440
two years later selling a two prior owners car will maybe fetch you 190000.
(carwale value for 2004 Alto got 197k, reduced 7k because of second owner)
cost of using this car = 90440

--------------------------------------------------------
Friday and I am bored, now its over to you.
Second hand car saves you 30992.
But it does not get you warranty (limited warranty available in truevalue) and (IMO overrated) new car feel.
