Depreciation for Intercooler

My i20 Crdi had an accident couple of days ago. The workshop guys have informed me that I will have to replace my turbo Intercooler since it has got damaged. They have informed that i would get only 50 % of the cost from insurance. The price quoted for the intercooler for i20 costs is about 27k + taxes. That would be about a 15 k from my pocket.

My query is

1. Is there really 50% depreciation in Intercooler for Insurance claims?

2. The service guys have informed that there is only a minor damage to the intercooler , but it needs to be replaced. If i ask them to return my defective piece, would I get any scrap value in the used market, so that I can cover up some of my damage expense. There are other damages too.

Subject to a deduction for depreciation at the rates mentioned below in respect of parts
replaced :
1. For all rubber/ nylon / plastic parts, tyres and tubes, batteries and air bags - 50%
2. For fibre glass components - 30%
3. For all parts made of glass - Nil
4. Rate of depreciation for all other parts including wooden parts will be as per the
following schedule.
AGE OF VEHICLE % OF DEPRECIATION
Not exceeding 6 months ..................................... ..................…Nil
Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year............................. 5%
Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years...............................10%
Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years..............................15%111
Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years...........……............25%
Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years...............................35%
Exceeding 5 year but not exceeding 10 years...............................40%
Exceeding 10 years..................................…………....... ............50%
As far as I can tell the intercooler would be in the #4.
But I am not a lawyer nor am I an insurance guy.

Please provide a little more info on who is your insurer and the age of your vehicle.

.......
Are you changing turbo + intercooler or intercooler only?. If it is only intercooler then I am shocked to see price of intercooler Rs.27k.

In my Tata Vista 2 years back I changed intercooler for Rs.2500. Thats more than 10 times. Please crosscheck this cost, either Hyundai Parts are costly or service center is trying to fleece you.

If you have small leak in intercooler then you can fix it by brazing or using cold welding like JB Weld. will cost you Rs.200 to 500.

My vehicle is just above 1 year ( 1 yr and 2 weeks to be exact ). The insurer is ICICI lombard and my service center is having tie up with the insurer

It is the charge for Intercooler alone. . I do not wish to repair it. If it is damaged, I would better replace it. As far as i have heard , it plays an important role in turbo and i do not wish to take any risk.

Regarding the prices of Hyundai parts, only this particular item is overpriced as per the estimate. The other parts like, bumber (1200/-), side fender (1100/-), front windshield(~3500/-) etc are lower than I had estimated. I am still to get the quote for headlight unit and the wiring kit.

I have already mailed to Hyundai to get the correct price. shall keep the post updated.

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

27K INR for an Intercooler doesn't sound right. It should be more in the price range of 4K to 10K, as per most common cars. Moreover this cannot have a 50% Depreciation. It's neither a Rubber part, nor a Plastic one. Someone is taking you for a ride here IMHO.

Last but not the least, Intercooler repairs (usually welding for small leakages or abrasions) are VERY VERY successful. Please go ahead and get it repaired, if there is no structural damage. Should not cost more than a 1000 bucks tops.

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

Is the part the Turbo charger, or just the intercooler ?
If it is the Turbo charger itself, then the price of 27k is ok (for new). But this should not attract a 50% depreciation charge.

Ask him how much does the radiator depreciate. You can think of the intercooler like a specialised radiator, It's metal, and not plastic. It's a mechanical component.

If it is the intercooler, then call another A.,S.S & ask for the price of a new intercooler. You will then know the price. You could even get one from outside & even get it fixed outside.

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

Sorry to hear that nettooran. Hyundai Diesel engine components are costly as most of it is imported.

I don't know whether Hyundai is sourcing the intercooler from local suppliers though. Do walk into another Hyundai service centre and inquire.

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

Got the final estimate from the service centre..

The Intercooler cost Rs.42000/- including tax. and that does not include the turbo. It is the price for intercooler alone.

Another blow! They have quoted Rs.40000/- for the wiring kit. The damage is just on the LH from side (pics attached). I need to check the damages myself once again. Feels that they are trying to take me for a ride.

I have written to their customer care, but still to get a response. can anyboby help me out? does the intercooler costs this much?

And to think that all this was caused by a bike driven by an idiot on high dose of alchohol

If your car is out of wty, or close to getting out of wty, Get it checked outside. You should even be able to source some cheaper spares.

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

Hey Nettooran,
I just spoke to the spare part section of a Hyundai dealer here in Coimbatore and he quoted Rs.17500 for the intercooler. He didnt have one in stock though. Better take your car for a quote at another dealer.

Looking at the picture, there doesnt seem to be much damage. What wiring kit are they talking about and why does it need replacement?

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

why on earth have you to replace the full wiring loom or kit , just for the frontal damage, some thing fishy, can you scan the estimates and paste it , Pictures of the damaged intercooler if you have .

Re: Depreciation for Intercooler

I think you should go to some other garage. Looks like some unholy nexus between the insurance company and your dealer workshop. Can't understand the need for a wiring replacement from the pictures. ICICI Lombard is the last company in India you should take insurance from. We have enough horror stories on the forum itself.

The car has one more year of warranty. Morover, I am doing this under insurance claim. Si I guess it is better to go through the service centre.

Scorpion, is is from an authorized service centre? thats less than half the price quote given to me.

All the wires that run on the left front side,(the section where there is damage) has been cut. Service centre guys say the wiring comes as a kit and need to be replaced completely.

Yes, I spoke to Chandra Hyundai in Coimbatore.

In my opinion, the damage doesnt look bad enough for the wires to be 'cut'. I would suggest you get your car out of the workshop asap.

Please post a few more pics of the engine bay and the so called damages. Keep some pics for your reference too. The packing that the intercooler comes in shoukd have some mrp mentioned.

If its within your left fender I wouldn't believe what your SA says. There should be only two sets of wires there at most - one for the indicator on the left fender and the other(not sure) for the LH fog lamp. The wiring kit for these two sure as hell can't cost 40,000 bucks. It should be having connectors - just plug and play. Go to the workshop and ask him to show you the cut wires. Wires don't get damaged in such minor dents unless someone is doing it on purpose. Is the dealer a certain 'POPULAR' one?

From the pic you would need to replace the bonnet, LH fender and LH headlamp along with the front bumper. Where does the intercooler sit on the i20? Is it on the same line parallel to the radiator or ahead or behind it ? I'm asking because its surprising that he hasn't mentioned any radiator damage but says wiring has been cut.
