But isn't the Etios a stripped to the bone version!

I really really find it tough to believe that a fabia will be 5 secs a lap faster than a fiesta s which is so track focussed. I'd take it all with a pinch of salt.

Dont think its a fiesta s.
More likely a classic.
Or did I miss that?

Re: Toyota Etios (P) beats the Maruti Suzuki SX4 hollow on a racetrack!

Having owned and driven a Baleno for 60000kms and an Etios for 6000kms I can vouch for both the cars...

Though the Etios is very very agile at all speeds, Baleno has its own royal charm...

Im quiet surprised to know that Etios did better than SX4 given the paper specs...but having driven it I know what it is capable of...

As for plastic parts flying around..well, 80kmph on 2nd gear does not transfer any vibrations to the seat/dash/steering...

Pardon my ignorance, but is there no chance for Fabia 1.6 to beat a Fiesta?

Here are the laptimes from the ACI track test (with Narain)
Polo 1.6 - 2m18.5 secs
Fabia 1.6 - 2m18.5 secs
Linea T-Jet - 2m16.8 secs
Fiesta 1.5 - 2m16.5 secs
Laura vRS - 2m07 secs

Fabia is at least 2 secs slower then Fiesta!

Isn't the sx4 more suv-ish? Never got chance to drive one but the sx4 was never expected to be great at handling. This isn't really an apples to apples comparison. They should be comparing the new etios to the benchmark best handler in that segment. I only smell some commercial interest here.

Yes I saw that. Imagine the new Fiesta being faster than the T-Jet. seems untrue. I remember a couple of years back when Narain tested the cars, the SX4 even beat the ANHC.
You never know what is correct. All I can say is that these figures don't matter to the common man in the real world.

Are you sure about this? IIRC ANHC was very close to Civic

Yes I do remember something to that effect, which was surprising. I don't have that article right now. will see if I can fish that out

Here, I have fished them out
(all during 2009)
SX4 = 2m20.5 secs
Civic = 2m17.95 secs
Fiesta S = 2m17.5 secs

(during 2010)
City=2m18.5 secs (2 secs quicker then SX4)

I believe the same too. SX4 is made as sedan for India and few other markets. But the genes is more of a rally car than a low slung track car. It might have replaced baleno here but its not same platform if I am not wrong.

^^
Yes, the comparison with SX4 does not appear appropriate. But the difference of full 6 seconds does bear out the capabilities of the practical Etios - gotta give the devil its due!
