Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012

EDIT on 21st August 2012 : Team-BHP's Nissan Evalia review has been uploaded at this link. Please continue the Evalia discussion over on the review thread.
  • Will be on sale later this year
  • To be built by Nissan at their India plant, which is incidentally their newest manufacturing facility worldwide
  • The Evalia is a seven-seater
  • Nissan is hoping to kick-start the “Urban-Class Utility Vehicle” space in India
  • Features a Rear View Camera and Intelligent Key
  • It will be interesting to see how the Indian market takes to the very utilitarian looks of this vehicle - will space and utility come out on top?

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

The Nismo Compact Sports Concept (CSC) is a one-off concept :
  • It’s a look at how small sporting three-door hatchbacks might look
  • Designed to excite the younger customers in markets such as India
  • Though its clearly based on a Micra, Nissan has made it clear that the CSC is officially no more than a concept
  • All those who say the Micra is too "cute/girly", do take note...

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

Nissan’s drag-monster was on display too. With close to 500 bhp from the 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6, all-wheel-drive and tons of electronics to help – it can humiliate supercars that cost 3-times as much. Search youtube for tons of proof. Add to that, it is currently the fastest production car around the Nurburgring. (The back seat has the worst leg room I’ve ever seen, but who cares!)

To make up for all the sins of the GT-R, Nissan came up with the Leaf. Its a zero-emission electric vehicle.

The 370Z was shown too. In case you missed our thread on the launch, check it out. Its got some great pictures and info. Link

GTO had a brief encounter with the Nissan Leaf a li'l before the Auto Expo. Here's what he had to say:

The Nissan Leaf is a fully electric hatchback. It has been on sale in Japan & the United States since a year. The US EPA rated the Leaf for a range of 117 kms on a single charge (its rated @ 160 kms by Nissan). Either range is sufficient, considering that most of the world drives less than 100 kms a day:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience.jpg

Over 20,000 sold worldwide. Nissan’s target of 50,000 for the year 2011 was disrupted by the Japanese earthquake tragedy & the resultant production issues:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-1.jpg

Currently produced only in Japan. USA & UK production will kick off in 2012:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-2.jpg

Don’t expect it to come to India anytime soon; atleast not until we get the infrastructure for public charging points:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-3.jpg

A full charge takes 8 hours. However, it is possible to charge 80% of the battery in 30 minutes, using the optional high voltage charger. Battery pack has a total of 192 cells and is manufactured in Japan. It weighs about 300 kilos and is placed below the floor (toward the center of the car). The battery pack carries a warranty of 8 years / 100,000 miles in the USA. As the battery nears the end of its charge, performance can drastically slow down though. A second 12V battery powers the ECU, audio, headlamps and electrical accessories. This battery is charged via the solar panel located on the rear spoiler:

Zero emissions & a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating to boot!
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-5.jpg

Get this, the Nissan Leaf actually creates artificial sounds to warn pedestrians!
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-6.jpg

What’s it like to drive? Well, save for the lack of sound, it’s just like any other proper car. And that’s quite an achievement. Torque is instantly available, and the steering is light too:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-8.jpg

Straight-forward interiors. Notice the rotary-dial gear control:

Info-screen showing the estimated range & how much can be gained if climate control is switched off:
Nissan (including Leaf) @ Auto Expo 2012-nissan-experience-10.jpg

The GT-R experience included riding shot-gun with a pro-race driver. Unfortunately, the GT-R hit a bump, making the bonnet pop out (part of its pedestrian safety feature). A special procedure had to be followed to make the GT-R operational again:

North-India makes for the dustiest environment in the country. Now we know what the F1 engineers had to contend with:

Final checks:

And the GT-R roars back to life:

The rest of Nissan's product portfolio for India was there too. However, surprisingly no Sunny Diesel on display! This would have been a good time for them to blow that horn.

Well rounded stall, Nissan have. People mover, SUV, hatchback, sedan, sports-cars and concepts.

The Nismo CSC is gorgeous! Wish it would evolve into more than a concept!

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

I actually like the looks of the Evalia, it's something different.

The Sunny really does need a diesel engine, but maybe Nissan doesn't have plans to bring one in yet? That doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'm assuming there's some reason it wasn't announced at the Expo.

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

Nissan has got a good strategy of having two different 7-8 seaters (Evalia for private buyers and Ashok Leyland Stile for the fleet buyers) right from the outset. Hope these 2 vehicles along with the upcoming Ertiga will create enough competition to grossly over-priced Innova.

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

Evalia is a refreshingly good looking. What is the engine capacity BTW?

The GTR is absolutely drool worthy, only if they keep revving the engine at regular intervals to attract more crowd at the Nissan pavilion.

Suprisingly no Sunny Diesel, would have been a good oppurtunity to showcase.

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

The Nismo CSC looks total Drool stuff. I would really like to see how the young Indian buyer takes to these 3 door cars. Why can't Nissan update the Micra to look something like the Nismo? The rear tail lights look classy.

Nissan leaf looks interesting too. With the rising fuel costs its high time the Govt. wake up from its slumber and encourage these cars. Is it going to be launched this year?

Also Is there any plan to come out with a diesel variant of the Teana?

The Nizmo looks too cool! Loved the interiors too. Hope they push it into production, or even launch it as the facelifted Micra The Leaf's back looks a lot like Renault Megane.

GTO
A lot shall depend on the pricing. When it comes to people movers, we have earlier seen Xylo sell like hot cakes despite the quirky design. Eeco again has been doing well in its segment.

The car looks good IMHO. Nissan's service network may cause a problem though.

Cheers,

Today's Hindu paper has ad for Nissan-Sunny with a mention of 'diesel option' being available. With that being the case wonder why that model is not displayed in the expo here!!

re: Nissan @ Auto Expo 2012 (Including the Nissan Evalia / NV200)

The nismo looks really cool. Looks perfect (from the outside) for a small urban family / couple. I hope they launch it and doesnt just stay as a concept. The Evalia looks quite "boxy" to me. I am sure it will be very utilitarian but people would benchmark the looks to Innova at the bare minimum.
Overall they seem to have a very well balanced bouquet of offerings. If only they start increasing the number of dealers and A.S.S.
