Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

Hi Guys

Looks like the Ambassador is a making a comeback. MotorOctane at Youtube claims so. See the video

Video claims that Peugot has bought the rights from HM and will be manufactured at their new Chennai plant.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

DC is at it again, messing with things beyond their ken. But atleast it's an EV this time.

Important to note they're expecting orders.

Quote:
This Ambassador EV is a concept vehicle that has been rendered digitally.
The electric Ambassador will be produced once DC2 gets enough positive response for it.

The iconic Hindustan Ambassador car, once fondly called the 'King of Indian roads', has got a surprising digital makeover. One of India's oldest custom design houses - DC2 Design, shared several pictures of the digitally rendered Ambassador recently. If produced, the car will be powered by an electric motor.

DC2 Design, founded by Dilip Chhabria almost 30 years ago, has made significant changes in the design to make the new-age Ambassador stand up in the crowd.

The look of the electric Ambassador keeps the iconic styling elements intact despite new treatments. The horizontal grille at the front is re-designed now with a frame garnished in chrome. The round headlights have made way for the angular LED headlamps. Even the prominent nose-bulge on the bonnet gets a makeover to keep the retro feel alive.

The concept electric Ambassador has only two doors, unlike its four-door original avatar. The wheels to get a makeover, with multi-spoke steel rims giving the car a contemporary look.

This is not the first time that DC design has attempted to remodel an Ambassador car. 12 years ago, the company showcased a concept called the Ambierod, which was powered by a V12 engine. Apart from the modern design elements, the Ambierod had one unique feature - the gullwing doors.

The Hindustan Ambassador was manufactured by Hindustan Motors of India till six years ago. It was first made by Morris Motors Limited at Cowley, Oxford in the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1959. Hindustan Ambassador was the first-ever car to be manufactured in India.

The production of Ambassador cars started in India since 1958. In its 66-year journey, the iconic car saw few improvements and changes before its production ended in 2014. With stricter emission norms, foreign brands entering the market and the failure to live upto changing consumer needs led the car to its end.

They are still widely used by several politicians and bureaucrats. It was once the first choice car among India's VIPs. It is now mostly seen serving as cabs in cities like Kolkata and Delhi.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

The front looks great to me. Rear is overdone and spoils the positives the front created. The proportionate side profile is gone. Overall looking from the front to the back its Wow to Meh.

DC expects Peugeot not to object to their monetizing of the Ambassador brand, which the latter bought for $12 million?

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

Does anyone feel that the width towards the near is narrowing down. Having seen the car mostly in its original form and my heart refuses to accept any change on its original design (the same with FIAT / PADMINI cars).

However, we should be adaptable to change and I do like the front, but the rear is over the top.

From DC perspective, we have seen sustaining the order book remains a challenge and also the service support. I don't think this will go beyond its concept honestly in current conditions.

What a modern iteration of the Ambassador could look like. An internship project by Amol Satpute for Tugbotz design

^^ Good but still not there.
It's like missing the rustic charm.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

Wonder how many would like this newer design. IMHO, it would continue to appeal to people as long is it retains most of the old charm and economics. If it is transformed completely, would there be takers?

I'd probably look for a more powerful engine with the same back seat comfort and slight make over outside still showing it is a later version of Good old Amby.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

Doesnt look anything like the Amby. Its like a new car. Why simply not name it anything.

Amby was known for its distinctive looks which most of us grew on.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

That looks like a preening emperor, not an Ambassador! There is absolutely no connect between it and the Amby.

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

Not sure if it's mentioned in this thread before, but why don't they electrify the Ambassador like they are doing to vintage cars in Europe?

Actually, this is not bad. I would say it's pretty visually arresting.
A very modern interpretation of the Ambassador retaining some of the old design elements & infusing new design touches too.
Particularly like the long bonnet - amidships cabin - tight fitting roof - tapering DLO (daylight opening), short boot look.
The slightly bulging haunches, thick "C" - pillars to give privacy to rear seat passengers & vertical taillights, again connect in a very modern way to the old Amby. The wheelarches also work; in encapsulating those large wheel - tyre combinations without looking over the top.
The grille needs to be worked on. Looks too "Ford"-ish right now.
And maybe round headlights could be mounted in the traditional style, up on the fender rather than following the current silly practice of mounting them lower on the grille.

This design can actually be worked upon and made quite an enticing one. Anyways this is much better than the blasphemous stuff churned out by DC!

Maybe PSA , now that it owns the Ambassador brand, has something to say?

Re: End of the road for the HM Ambassador?

When I think of Ambassador, I think of stately and a mature design. None of these racer / boyish designs. Something like the design of a Rolls Royce or a Cadillac. Would love to see the Ambassador name associated with something like that rather than a sports car (or god-forbid, a C-SUV).
