Used cars have a much lower import duty as compared to brand new cars ! The duty varies upon the age of the car .

@california dude - I remember in my final year when i was studying Indirect taxes we had a chapter on the import duty imposed , They used to calcualte it like this :-

0 to 6 months old - X %
6 mths to 1 year old - y % ..... and so on...

Dont remember the percentages though

Thanked: Once

To be honest I just felt the custom officers are just such a CORRUPT LOT. I was up front and paid the maximum duty they still made me pair Rs 35,000 in a bribe to sign the papers to release the vehicle.

This was truly so shameful and then we wonder what if India was without such corrupt Goverment servants. They are the most corrupt bunch. I wish we had a legal system where we can report these people but unfortunately right up to the top they all share the Bribe.
Apologise in advance for the ranting but I truly feel cheated in all this.
