BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced

Thank you to a Team-BHP fan (who prefers to remain anonymous) for sending us this information. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts!

BMW is reducing prices on many of its models in India. The step is being taken as the levels of localisation have increased.

BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced-bmw.jpg

According to the information we have received, the X5 SUV will see the biggest price reduction - about Rs. 4 lakh. Among other cars, the 530d sedan will see its price fall by Rs. 2 lakh (approximately) and the X3 SUV and 3-Series should see their prices cut by Rs. 1 lakh or so. BMW is likely to make an official announcement about these price cuts in a few days.

Earlier this year, BMW had announced that it had started sourcing different components for local production of its cars at the Chennai plant from various Indian manufacturers. The level of localisation at its Chennai plant has been increased to approximately 50%. The company has also increased its cumulative investment in India from Rs. 390 crore to Rs. 490 crore. Most of this investment has been route to the Chennai plant.

The company claims that 95% of BMW cars on Indian roads are built at its Chennai plant, which has a capacity to produce 14,000 units. The facility has two assembly lines and locally assembles models such as the 1-Series, 3-Series, 3-Series Gran Turismo, 5-Series, 7-Series, X1, X3 and X5.

re: BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced

Superb! Bold move by BMW and such a disruptive technique was the need of the hour as they are getting butchered in the luxury car market.

The X5 would now be approx 60 lakhs ex-showroom which is great value considering the top models of the E and 5 cost nearly as much. The timing is perfect as MB is preparing for the GLE launch there is not much stock left of the ML with dealers either. The X5 could eat up a considerable share from the much loved ML.

I am surprised they have not dropped priced on the over priced 730Ld that has been selling for nearly 15-20 lakhs discount over the past year. Perhaps, they want to keep the price high so that the new one does not seem like a major price hike.

X5 at 60 odd lacs ex showroom?. Sounds great.

I personally have not seen much of the new X5 on the roads.

This is not Rumor but correct - dealers are taking bookings at new rates only - , X5 takes maximum cut of 4 lac , 520 around 2 lac , 530 & 3 series about 1 Lac

Discussions started elsewhere last week

re: BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced

Personally I love Beemers, and I think they're relatively not expensive, even today. I don't think the issue is prices - I think one of the key issues is the whole RFT nonsense, and anyone who's had a BMW outside the metros has been burnt by it, and that's generated a lot of negative perception against BMW. I think just making RFT's optional + a space saver with the car (I heard they've started giving those) is the real fix they should be aiming for.

Having said that, who doesn't love a price drop, so kudos to BMW

Mod Note: For benefit of all: RFT => Run Flat Tyres

This is good news if its true. But, i suspect how is it possible for X5 to be priced at 60L ex showroom, given the fact that the BMW has recently launched X3 3.0 m sport at 59.9 ex showroom delhi (as per Autocar report)

My bad,I was referring to the launch price of the X5 which was 64 for the 5 seater variant. However, prices have gone up by then so essentially it will now cost as much as it did at launch around 65 lakhs.

re: BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced

Hasn't the price of the BMW F30 increased by roughly 10-14 lakhs since its launch in 2012. So why are we celebrating a 1 lakh decrease in price? (1 lakh is ~2% decrease in price)

Further steel is big component in any car and international steel prices are at an all time low.

This has happened because of creation of the entry level luxury car segment - A3, CLA etc - earlier the entry level to German luxury was 3-series, C-Class, A4, but now it is A3, CLA etc, the others have moved into next price bracket

Well explained in this thread

re: BMW to drop prices due to increased localisation. EDIT: New prices announced

So i am generally not a buyer of these cars, but for the one's who do, i have a question.

I heard that they give quite a good discount on these cars, so if i presume that above is Ex-Showroom price, do you get enough discount to get the EX-showroom price to be an actual OTR price.

10-14 lakhs? F30 launched in second half of 2012. Prices have gone up since then I know but when did it shoot up so much?

It's hard to digest, but it's believable - going by the following example:

So in 2011, ex-showroom price of 520d was 36.9 lakh - now according to this latest price list by BMW, with 36.9 lakh ex-showroom as budget, you can only go for entry level 3-series

When I bought F30, it was just below 40 lakhs, soon after its launch. It hasn't gone upto 50 or 54 lakhs or anywhere near that today. So I don't see this 10-14 lakhs hike as mentioned.

Where did 10-14 lacs come from?

When the F30 was launched in 2012 it was 32.5 lacs for sport line and luxury line. Then sunroof and hifi audio were added and the price was raised by 2 lacs a few months later. Since then the prices have gone up to 39l and now reduced a lac. If the on road price has gone up by a more significant amount blame it on the government for increasing the import duties and taxes and excise a large amount.

Prices of supercars have gone up almost 50% only due to goverment taxes. Ridiculous.
