Great pictures!

The Ameo looks neat! No unnecessary curves. Simple, plain and elegant!clap: Just how European car designs are expected to be. Love the neutral design!
Glad Volkswagen didn't follow the current trend of putting excess chrome or any "fluidic" curves just so that the car could appeal to our market.

Was Skoda not participating in this year's Auto Expo?

Those inserts are for the passenger airbag disabling switch and TPMS SET switch. Not applicable for India (yet).

From a LHD version sold overseas:

From the above posts, the AMEO has come across as a polarizing shape - love it or hate it! I personally am one who hates it and seems like a desperate attempt by VW to get their sales figures up.

Seriously asking out of my ignorance. Is there anywhere in the world that these Compact/Shorter sedans are sold ? e.g., Amaze/Dzire/Xcent/Ameo etc., Atleast I have not seen much outside of India where I have travelled.

I think we Indians want everything in one like a Mixed Sambhar :) and the manufacturers do all tricks to fit which makes these cars stunningly ugly. There is nothing called proportion in any of these cars and still they are selling well in our market.

Take this one itself as an example - Except for that additional 50 litres of space stuck inside that ugly thing protruding outside (AKA boot) what difference it makes to a Polo which is a proportioned lovely looking car. Can't understand the mentality. Anyway, it is just me !

The styling in front does not match with that in the rear.

Front styling is for a premium car. Rear styling is for a taxi market car. And in this taxi style rear, the prism type slant cuts look out of place. Private car buyers will be put off to see this, especially with VW badge and associated higher price.

And in all probability, the price (to buy and to maintain) will be higher than the other taxis (Etios, Verito). So the taxi operators too won't buy this.

IMO, only Maruti Suzuki can get away with such designs.

But for the rear, this to me is a good looking car. The boot is very neatly integrated with the rest of the body & doesn't really feel like a misfit. However, not sure if this would rev up the sales chart as there is nothing much to separate it from the Polo/ Vento. Having said that, being a VW fan myself, I'd not mind checking it out once it is launched.

I imagine that the rear end worked out cheaper to manufacturer with more plastic, so they patched it up with a fancy name. No, VW, I am not fooled: it is cheap and ugly (but probably expensive to replace) and looks it.

And I speak as a very-long-term fan of the VW look. I'm disappointed here.

But, if anybody says, nobody is forcing me to buy one, then I admit it. Each to their own. And speaking of taxi looks, as someone just did, I wonder if VW might have a distant dream of getting into that market?

Ameo.. Looks like a car in front of a boot. :)

The reason for these horrid sub 4 metre sedans is the tax rules in India and the perception of the Indians that 3 box car means it is more premium than a hatchback. Sub 4 metre cars are taxed at 12% while others are taxed at 27%. There are also rules regarding engine capacity; if the engine is less than 1.2 L for pertol and 1.5 L for diesel, then the taxes are much lower.

Not just this, but all the CSs are spoilt by the rear. I dont know why manufacturers want to stick to the tail lamps from the deriving hatch, or if not, just HAVE to make them smaller.
Why not a nice two piece lamp unit, breaking at the boot line?

More than in-offensive, it is bland ! Even the Fiat Uno's derriere looks interesting now ! :)

But in the price-conscious market, will VW be able to keep the tag competitive ?

Even though it looks to to be the least good-looking VW available, I feel that the rear looks integrated with the rest of the shape. Could it be due to the simple 'straight lines' in the boot design rather than the bulges and curves we have seen on the competition ?

IMO, the Ameo will slot in just above the Polo and will appeal to those who want a little more load carrying capacity than the normal Polo as also the 'Fleet' segment. Engines on offer are adequately powerful and the premium DSG versions will attract its own set of customers. Should be a decent seller!

I am not too confident about the looks. The front as usual is classy and subtle but the rear to me is dull and boring.

This will though be bought by the VW fans for its sheer driveablity and built quality.

I am in two minds about the car, but I absolutely love this Blue color.
Pricing, I guess VW would be looking at the Grand i10-Xcent for inspiration, however, the Xcent has almost double the bootspace of the Grand i10.
There is absolutely no differentiating factor between the hatch and CS here.
