Thank you AYP for sharing that video. :thumbs up

- Lastly and probably the most surprising is the fact that Ameo suddenly looks a bit comical to me in the video, which it never did in any of the earlier pictures.

I saw some Ameos with temporary numbers on the Mumabi Pune expressway. It does not look ugly or comical at all.

Ameo specs compared with its peers!

Nearing launch mid-June ?

Interesting to see VW making price the highlight of their online campaign. Will they slot it under the premium Polo? Remains to be seen. And no it doesn't look comical, but the sharp styling on the boot could have been avoided. Looks odd.

Ameo Guess the price contest. This indicates pricing will be known on 5th June.

I don't think they will slot it under Polo. In all the interviews they have mentioned that Ameo is a premium product. They have also mentioned that they are not here to play the volume game. My guess is the base Ameo version would be around the Polo Comfortline price.

Volkswagen won't share the Ameo with Skoda

TG: Will the Ameo also be shared with Skoda?

Dr Andreas Lauermann : This is a car developed at Volkswagen as a Volkswagen for a segment Volkswagen wants to cover. And therefore, there are no plans for Skoda.

VW is going to have a tough time pricing the Ameo. Even if say the TDI DSG is priced say at 11 lakhs. It is a good 1-2L above Zest or Dzire ZDi. Suddenly it would even look like a poor man's Vento. The pricing overlaps with Polo is also another factor. Polo TSI DSGretails at 10.xx L. At 11.xx L for a TDI DSG might look a value proposition. Price it higher in 12s and 13s, I doubt anyone looking for a hatch/CS will even consider the Ameo.

That said if VW gave a Polo TDI DSG. Was there any need for them to even design a CS? Given Polo itself was bordering 4m and had a cramped rear (for reasonably tall guys) itself. I am trying to understand why VW invested on a CS at the first place.

It will 'interesting' to see what sort of 'cost cutting' they do to end up pricing it competitively.

Autocar India's inside sources indicate that the Ameo might come in with a surprise starting price of (well below) Rs 5.4 lacs!

The Ameo will be up against some formidable rivals and this made VW tweak its pricing strategy. Most VW products tend to be priced at a slight premium over their competition, and while that was thought to be the case with the Ameo too, sources from the company tell us that it will have a starting price well below Rs 5.4 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

This means that, while it won’t worry the likes of the Tata Zest (starting at Rs 5.07 lakh) or the Ford Figo Aspire (starting at Rs 5.2 lakh), it will be priced bang on against the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent, all of which have starting prices between Rs 5.32-5.36 lakh. One thing, however, has to be borne in mind – we are talking only about the base model, and higher variants could have a bigger price discrepancy, depending on the equipment list.
Volkswagen India will officially reveal the prices of the Ameo on June 5th.

Are they planning to price it alongside Polo? Bangalore prices for Polo starts at 5.4 ex showroom.

That would turn out to be disastrous for Polo then!

I think it's quite possible that both Polo and Ameo ends up having a similar price band as they share almost all the components and even the equipment list is more or less same in the both. The Ameo should be pricier by mere 15-20k than the hatch.
At the end of the day Ameo is simply a Polo with bigger boot.

Will be interesting if they actually position it 10-15K below the Polo or even equal to the Polo. Of course traditionally the Compact Sedan sits above the hatch, but hey, there is no hard and fast rule that it should always be like that. The Ameo has the advantage of a little more space in the back and the boot, but is constrained by the poor looks that is the bane of compact sedans.A price below the Polo may cause more buyers to ignore the disproportionate looks.

Pricing along side the Polo also means that the top end Diesel DSG can come in around 9.5L Ex Showroom and 11-11.2 L OTR Bangalore. That would be almost 4.5 L cheaper than the Vento TDI DSG. Not a bad deal at all.

Of course the bad news is that the diesel will only come few months down the line.

But then won't profitability take a hit if priced alongside Polo?
Considering that manufacturing cost of Ameo may be higher than that of equivalent Polo variant, the expected sales may not justify such pricing even if we factor cannibalization of Polo.

The manufacturing cost maybe cheaper than the polo. But if priced lesser than the Polo, I feel the Vento may suffer a bit. Those who are obsessed with the sedan factor may pick the Ameo instead.

I had a word with the sales representative in Whitefield Bangalore showroom and according to him Petrol engine will launch immediately but the diesel version will be launched during the festival season. Ameo petrol prebooking has already started.
