When being tested for emissions, the front wheels would be on the dyno roller but rear wheels would be static. When the ESP detected rear wheel speed as static and no steering inputs the ECU would go into "emission cheat mode" and the car would pass emissions as the ECU would alter the fuelling parameters and run a different map. This affected the efficiency as well as performance.

However the guys who caught the whole scandal were testing the VW cars by driving it on regular roads rather than how the EPA was testing them on the dyno roller.

They weren't able to reproduce the lower emissions on the road at all.

In case of Vento the DSG model has the ESP so might be running on the map with lower emissions. That's my guess as to why they aren't recalling the DSG.

Still doesnt answer why the Polo GT TDi is not being recalled - it has the same 1.5L engine without ESP.

I remember reading that the polo GT TDI has a different ECU vs the vento.

Not 100% sure of this. Needs to be verified.

Thanks for the reference. Further checking the IDC details, the test runs for 19 minutes and covers a distance of only about 10km in that time. So the average speed is quite low. The 90kmph speed is maintained for only 90s during the test.

My in-laws had bought a Vento TDI manual last year. From the VW India site, I checked that the car is among those recalled. The VIN indicates that the car is Oct 2015 manufactured and belongs to MY2016.

So it's the recently sold cars that have been impacted. From the sales thread, VW has sold 6249 Ventos from Sept-15 to Feb-16. 3877 could very well be close to the number of manual TDI Ventos sold during that period (about 62% of total, although March data is unavaiable).

Does this also mean that dyno graphs for the affected Volkswagen group cars are not indicative of their actual road performance?
