This is interesting, let me try to incorporate this calculation and post the results. |
I have tried to incorporate the Excise Duty % in the calculation and see the results below -
Cars, by Revenue (with Excise Duty % incorporated:
As you can see, Creta loses its 2nd spot to Dzire due to 30% Excise Duty and there are some changes in the pecking order, but no major ones though.
For some of the cars, there was a confusion in Excise % since one of the Petrol/Diesel versions might fall into some other duty bracket, for which I have taken a median value of them. This may not distort the figures much, but there might be some discrepancy.
Manufacturer Revenue Market Share:
In terms of Revenue Market share, there is no change in pecking order, but there are some minor changes in the percentages. The small car makers gain some market share from the previous values.

Excellent analysis! The biggest surprise is the fact that Toyota is the third largest carmaker of India by revenue. clap:
Move aside Tata / Mahindra / Honda, a relatively new-comer like Toyota has captured close to 10% of the market. On a closer look, one would find that Toyota reached here with only two proper products - Innova & Fortuner.
Speaks volumes about their quality and people's willingness to pay top dollars for the same.

I know a certain family which has been buying Omnis from the time it was introduced in 1984. They just buy a new Omni every 5 years!!!
The reasons:
1> Primary- It can squeeze into narrow lanes(we have many such alleys in north Calcutta) where even a Ritz or a Swift cannot squeeze in!!
2> The oldies with arthritis need to spread their legs while seated. Its only possible in an omni.
3> It's damn cheap to buy and maintain and abuse friendly at the hands of the driver.
4> The max speed in the part of the city where this Omni spends its life is 40KMPH(that too on rare occasions)
They also have a second car but they hate it. Since they have to take the Omni to reach the garage where it's kept. lol: |
Agreed to the fact that Omni is versatile in small alleys but you make a bad comparison of it by using Ritz and Swift as references. More apt would be a wagon R or Eeco which are pretty much boxy as omni. Ritz with its arched wheel flanges is a perfect candidate for getting scraped by on all sides by other four wheeled creatures of the road.

Did I hear it correctly? I believed all along that FIAT had no competent products for the Indian market. All cars on sale on FIAT floors are derivatives of either the Punto or the Linea, which are too old on all measures. The FIAT 500 does not see any takers anyway, while the Panda, TIPO, Bravo, etc may never see daylight in India. FIAT has already messed up with the pricing of Jeep Grand Cherokee and it would not in all possibilities provide any aid in form of sales, to the ailing company. :Frustrati
Coming to Chevrolet they have products at right price points (viz., Beat, Sail U-VA, Sail Sedan, Tavera, Enjoy, Cruze and the Trail blazer), they have respectable number of dealers as well. What is missing is the freshness (such as Beat, Cruze and Tavera which are already too old and outlived their life) and value proportion (such as Sail Sedan which is neither here [in Etios/Xcent territory] nor there [in Dzire/ Amaze Territory]) in their cars. The recently introduced trail blazer also seems trail behind the blazing sales of Fortuner / Endeavor.
It is disheartening to see Ritz is not getting the right attention. it is the most underrated car on our roads, IMO.
Recently had a chance to drive and being driven in a Ritz. Its road manner is the best and probably a bench mark for small cars. Swift and celerio engulfed its marked

Maruti's 'no-marketing' the Ritz was more than anything else to let it fade. More than Swift and Celerio, Maruti itself killed the product by step mother treatment in all these years.
I have owned that car for 3 years and 1.08L kms. Never have I felt lack of anything or any kind of major shortcoming for my daily usage of 120+kms. Be it ride quality, comfort, greenhouse area, space inside compared to Swift are all in the positive side plus the shape was unique to my eyes and it grows into you the more one lives with it. Many customers were turned off by the rear design. Overall it is sad to see that car die.
Now it is sold as a Taxi vehicle in the LDi TOUR variant only for yellow plate owners.

It's not that Maruti didn't try, but I think many buyers were put off by its looks from the rear when it was first introduced.
Interestingly, Maruti Ritz was the first "official" team-bhp review -

Looking at the declining numbers of the Bolero in the recent months, what do you guys think about the potential of the Power Plus? Will it be able to revive Bolero's sales?
Personally, I think it will take the numbers back up to 8500 levels per month, on an average over the next 6 months to a year.
Honda CEO claims although sales to dealerships are down, retail sales have been "almost flat" in first half of the year.

Honda, which has seen sales come under pressure due to the shift in consumer preference towards petrol cars in recent months, said that it has realigned its inventory at dealerships and is looking at growing steadily in the second half of the year. "There was a 10% swing in favour of petrol cars. We had to realign inventory as there was excess stock at dealerships. Our wholesale numbers have come down but retail is almost flat", said Ueno

Ford has become the largest car exporter from India in the month of August 2016. The American automaker has overtaken Hyundai to take the top spot. It shipped 17,860 units in the last month, compared to Hyundai's figure of 16,506 units. Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest automaker, was the third largest exporter with 12,131 shipments.
While Ford has been relying on the EcoSport compact SUV to drive its export numbers for the last two years, the new-gen Figo and Aspire have now started contributing to the overall numbers. The India-made Figo hatchback is now being sold as the Ka+ in Europe. The Figo and Aspire twins are also exported to Middle-East, Africa, and the ASEAN countries.
Meanwhile, the EcoSport too is making a strong case for itself, as it has become the most exported car from the country during this fiscal year. With 35,517 units shipped in the fiscal so far, the EcoSport has overtaken the previous leader - the Nissan Micra, which has had 31,605 unit exports. But with Ford now planning to shift production of the EcoSport to Europe, the exports from India will mainly be driven by the Ka+, which has recently gone on sale in the European markets.
Last week, Ford had reported that its plant in Sanand, Gujarat has achieved the
1 lakh production milestone, with around 50% contribution from exports. Ford manufactures the Figo and the Aspire at the Sanand plant.

August proved to be another bumper month for UV sales in the country. Leading the growth for overall passenger vehicles, the segment notched up over 47% growth in sales, largely driven by the new models from the stables of Maruti, Hyundai and Toyota.
